*** The Official Microsoft Surface Thread ***

If you have a Surface Pro 2 and were unlucky enough to get the December firmware then you will have sleep issues and incorrect battery being reported.

Some people have replaced their Surface Pro 2s with ones that don't have the update. Interestingly, the CPU has been upgrade from Intel Core i5-4200U to Intel Core i5-4300U. It has faster clock speeds and more features such as vt-d.

Mines the 4200U, I got the December update, then without knowing there was a bug I refreshed the device and now have the bloody Telemetry unknown device issue lol

did the new firmware break it?

So as someone who has a Pro arriving in the next couple of days, beyond checking to make sure it's the upgraded CPU version, what should/shouldn't I do to ensure it doesn't give me the same problems as the Surface 2? I guess if it comes with the December firmware installed already, short of reflashing to an earlier version you've just got to wait for Microsoft to release a fix?

To check the CPU, you can just go to your Computer properties or even task manager.

The December firmware which is bad is dated 10/12/2013. If you have it then I personally wouldn't do anything to flash it back. Seems to cause more trouble than its worth.

I managed to get the battery reporting the correct values by shutting down the Surface and then held down the volume up and power button. This caused the screen to flash on and off. The next time I started it worked. I made an earlier post about it in this thread.

Other than that, if you do have the bad firmware, you can either shutdown the Surface after use or use hibernate rather than sleep. I have been shutting down rather than hibernating. Its quick top start but you have to reopen apps.

The update has been removed from Windows update so you shouldn't be able to get it now by accident.

I can use the tablet normally its just having to switch it off that is the annoyance.

Righteo, thanks for that. Hopefully I'll have a nice little slip from Royal Mail when I get home so we'll see what's what soon enough. Fingers crossed.

Unfortunately I don't think Microsoft have handled the issue well. The majority of info I have got has just been from a thread in the link below.

Yeah cant see any at the moment though.
Ms has 64gb with touch cover for £305 but sold out and as its a sale i doubt that will be back, everyone else seems to be really expensive.

Seems you missed all the offers mate. Tesco had it for £249 for quite a while, Argos £269 with a £25 app store voucher and the same for MS Store.

So Surface experience round two, all be it with the pro 2 this time rather than the regular 2. Firstly despite the slightly larger form factor I think the coating on the back is much nicer. The whole device feels a bit more premium. Oddly whilst the web pictures of the product are nice, as is the case with many problems it's nicer in the flesh.

Still need to get a case and the missus prefers the type cover so one of those will be on the way shortly. That said the on screen keyboard is pretty good.

Had all kinds of issues out of the box with empty windows and undrawn graphical elements but since a full update everything seems to be running ok. It's been less problematic in desktop mode than the standard Surface which is a big plus as that's where a lot of time will be spent.

Popped a Lacie external in to start transferring files up to Skydrive which is all going up ok, though is there anywhere I could see a transfer ETA like Dropbox?

I cant work out if it's getting warm or that's just what laptops and tablets with proper cpu's do these days. Haven't used anything other than my Note 2 for couch computing in anger for ages.

I imagine the Surface 2 to Surface 2 Pro is going to be a pretty well travelled road for many!

It's funny that there's still no VLC :p

I found some media content that flat out just won't run on my RT, yet on my PC it runs with the Microsoft app, nothing can open it on my RT.

EDIT : And MS are pathetic, look at all the VLC fakes on the store.

Quick Q, is anyone running Chrome on the Surface Pro? Do you ever get tabs that stop responding to touch but still work fine with the stylus (and presumably any other input device)?
