***The Official MSI 5850 Twin FrozeR Thread***

tried overclocking yesterday could not get even 850 core stable with bumping up the voltage , used heaven as a benchmark does look better, but fps is no better than the 8800 gtx it replaced.
changed clock from 2.4 to 3.2on the q6600 did not make 5% improvement so do not think cpu bound.
any ideas?

Currently I'm working on a lower overclock profile that require lower voltage for less demanding games. So far I managed 835MHz/1250MHz at 1.150v Heaven Benchmark 2.1 six loops no crash, gonna try testing it out in some games later.

Nice, I'm doing mine at 1.21v, 855 MHz on core, stock memory. Dunno if my card is faulty but it's a very poor overclocker (like many other).

Has anyone seen any frame-rate improvement which makes overclocking these cards worth while?

Yes, overclocked they will match/ exceed stock 5870 performance depending on the amount of overclock. 900mhz on core should be around stock 5870 speed

I've pushed 1.2v through mine at 850 core. Probably can do a little more but not fully tested. Waiting for Sandy Bridge ;)

Cheers for the reply. I'm going to hold off overclocking mine till I meet a game which limits the fps to around 30fps. =)

Whats the best way for me to install this card. I currently have an 8800gts.

How do I remove old drivers etc. Thanks

I did try 1.150v on 850MHz, but it crashed quite quickly in Heaven...

I'm getting the feeling that once the core clock pass a certain point, it would require much more voltage than the lower end overclock. I know I'm pointing out the obvious for overclocking, but it really does feel that way :p

Hi all, what sort of GPU score on 3DMark 11 would you be expecting for this card at stock?

Im getting 3405 for the graphics, that seem a bit low??

This is the best I got with my other 5850 - http://3dmark.com/3dm11/94101.

That's at 1000/1225.

3405 sounds about right for a stock 5850.

You may very well be right in this case. My Sapphire 5850 achieved 825/1200 at stock volts and 910/1200 at 1.149v (5.7% over stock 5850 voltage, default for 5870). I needed as much as 1.25v to bench at higher clocks and it was hard to get anything above that stable, even though benching at 1000/1225 wasn't problematic.

These GPUs are designed to work at 1.15v assuming that they're more or less the same as 5870s. That gives 1.208v for "safe" over-voltage of 5% and 1.265v for max of 10%. It should be enough for most chips to max out their capabilities anyway.

With stock voltage of reference 5850s these figures would be significantly lower, 1.141v for 5% over stock and 1.196v for 10% over stock. Nonetheless, both 5850s and 5870s have the same limit of 1.350v (with MSI 5850 Twin Frozr II being an exception to the rule...).

I would suggest removing everything Nvidia related using uninstallers in Programs and Features. Reboot, CCleaner the registry, install the new card, let the Windows install new drivers, download CCC 10.12 from AMD's website, install, enjoy.

Finding 10.4 drivers giving me better fps in tf2 than 10.12.....I was getting around 40 fps for some reason, now a min of about 80 even in battles.

Don't know why but most games are fine , tf2 really gives me trouble though.

Were you using the 10.12 "Preview" drivers, as these seem to be notorious for producing around half of the expected frame rate. Look for the genuine 10.12 or the 10.12a drivers :-)

Anyone elses card make a really high pitched whine on loading screens and menus in games?

Played Crysis, L4D and CoH and on each game I get a high pitched noise from the card. When the game is actually running theres No noise. Weird

Yep, I did... but touch wood, haven't heard it for a while now...

When I first heard it I thought 'RMA time', but then I just figured I'd live with it for the sake of a £125 bargain video card! Fingers crossed, it won't get any worse.
