***The Official MSI 5850 Twin FrozeR Thread***

just tryed changing the fan speed on my card cus it was running at 40degress on desktop and not it will not let you overclock it at all it just resets changes....i hate this card.....now as soon as i touch the memory clock the card goes to its stock clock....

Yea...55% is a bit loud when just using the PC for normal use when no gaming...I've set the fanspeed at around 40% at idle, so I won't hear it. I think anything under 50% fanspeed you won't really hear it over the case fans, but 55% fanspeed the noise is definitely noticable.

I agree 55 is quite loud, 30-40 much better:D had to rma one of mine to ocuk today, arrived faulty, wish me luck

O.k. I asked in general but I'll ask here to I've just got my new psu. The antec truepower new 650. The atached cables include 2 6 pin pci-e plugs on a 22amp 12v rail. this rail will also have a wd green and a wd blue sata a dvd combo and a couple of molex case fans running of it.

Should I run the 5850 off its own 25amp 12v rail or will it be fine from the attached cables?

Got mine today - just plumbed it in :)

Haven't overclocked it at all yet and already it is a big jump from my HD4870 1GB card. I'm pretty pleased with it so far. Mine idles at around 30-35 degs. (fan speed set to 25%)

Some benchies I did (all at 1920x1200, stock GPU clock speeds, core i5 750 with mild 3.2Ghz overclock, turbo mode on):

Just Cause 2 - Maximum quality with 2xAA, 16xAF

"The Dark Tower"
HD4870 31.13 AVG
HD5850 43.89 AVG

"Desert Sunrise"
HD4870 40.45 AVG
HD5850 57.08 AVG

"Concrete Jungle"
HD4870 26.76 AVG
HD5850 33.27 AVG

Batman Arkham Asylum - Maximum quality with 8xAA, physx off

HD4870 MIN 44 MAX 89 AVG 67
HD5850 MIN 63 MAX 129 AVG 97

Company of Heroes - Maximum quality, 8xAA

Couldn't see vsync option for this game?
HD4870 MIN 33 MAX 60 AVG 53.5
HD5850 MIN 49.5 MAX 60.3 AVG 58.9

Happy times

Get that CPU clocked (MUCH) more and overclock the card. Both will help massively with your framerate, you have soooo much unrealised potential in that system :-)

Overclocking the CPU won't do much at this resolution and levels of AA.

currently at 21c with 8% fan speed, but then again, its still fairly loud.

Where do you live, in a sound-proof room somewhere in Antarctica?

Some games are heavily CPU dependent so I beg to differ :p But what I'm saying is that the CPU is capable of much more and he should use that to his advantage.

BTW.. I've just been looking at reviews for 470/480's.. and what strikes me is how good the 5850's and 5870's actually are. Shockingly good going by the reviews (although these are likely all old reviews now). With an overclocked 5850, you've got a pretty damn fast system.

Please do give me some proven examples of games that benefit from a heavily overclocked CPU at this resolution. I have some to prove you otherwise if you want me too.

And yes, old reviews are old, better to compare older cards in newer reviews but mind you, they usually use the old sets of scores from older reviews anyway.

Source games and Black OPs? :p

Not saying graphic is not important (more important than CPU in most cases), but having heavily overclocked CPU does help quite a bit for games that are not using Quad-cores well.

BFBC2 for example...

No, I don't have any proper examples (soz).. but 3.2Ghz isn't exactly allowing the full potential of the card even with 'turbo' on. But what you are saying to me is that since I have a 3.2Ghz chip, I won't benefit from overclocking my CPU .... and I beg to differ even at 1920*1200. Sure the results will be minimal, but even if he's gaining only an a couple of frames, that combined with an overclock will all add to to the smoothness of the games :-)

EDIT: I merely suggest the guy TRY overclocking to at least 3.6Ghz, and see what happens at that res, with AA on :-) As always.. happy to be wrong and I've learned something

EDIT2: Krugga... think we are taking the thread off-topic anyway...

Core i5 at 3.2GHz with Turbo on (effective 3.36GHz on 4 cores and 3.84GHz on 2 cores) vs Core i5 at 3.6GHz does little to no difference at this resolution.

Back on topic, my system randomly crashed yesterday in idle state, gotta love the new card

You have to take CPU arcitecture into consideration as well. In fact you have just proved the point that CPU clock speed is important in Black OPs for people that are not using i5/i7, as Quad-core such as Q6600 at 3.0GHz is only around as fast as i7 920 at 2.0GHz, and Q6600 3.6GHz is only around as fast as i7 920 at 2.6GHz :p

Guys guys - chillax. I was just highlighting immediate differences betwixt the benchies I ran. I am well aware I could get a bit more from the chip but I haven't really needed to in all honesty. The temps I was getting at 4Ghz were a little too high for my liking so I dropped it right down. I will eventually prob. settle on a 3.6Ghz 24/7 clock. When I can be bothered.

I specifically meant Core i5/i7 in that case.

Bear in mind that there still aren't many games that are that CPU limited and in case of the above two, they use Crossfire 5870s and a single 5970. There is no way a single 5850 would be bottlenecked by this CPU ;)

Wasn't stressed :p ;) I assume you'd prefer all cores running at top tilt rather than two sitting idle that's all, but you have your reasons :-) BTW.. seems I need a i7 920 d0 ROFL :-) Krugga.. I don't have black ops :p hehe

Anyway.. what I won't be wrong about is clocking the gfx card will DEFINATELY help you lol.

well it's finally here, the packaging has lot to be desired tho as I'd expected the graphics card box to be packed in a box with styrofoam/bubble wrap/etc but the graphic card box was only placed in a 'plastic parcel bag'(so if the delivery guy had put anything heay on to of it, or something heavy had fallen on it during transit could have damaged the card).

flight sim X... bearly uses a graphics card at all mostly goes off your CPU :)
