***The Official MSI 5850 Twin FrozeR Thread***

I'm testing 785/1125 at 1.144V atm. Hopefully I can squeeze a little more juice with reasonable volts out of the card. I'm trying to get the best in terms of temps/noise/volts/clocks. This is how I found a sweetspot with my other 5850 that did 925 MHz on core and 1200 MHz on memory with as little as 1.149V.
Which actually worries you more? Using higher voltage, or the extra heat caused by it?

I'd definitely be careful with the voltage in the first place. GPUs aren't CPUs and they were off pretty quickly.

1250mV is 15% more than stock volts, 1195mV is 10% more and 1140mV is 5% more. Overvolting always reduces the lifespan and bearing that in mind, I wouldn't want to go over 1.25V in the long term and would feel much more comfortable applying no more than 10% above the stock voltage levels.

Just as a reminder, Intel advises 5% voltage increases as safe and 10% increases as maximum. Of course that applies to their CPUs and they're definitely more durable anyway.

The cards are designed to withstand pretty high temps, as you may be concerned, baking some Nvidia cards is a method to revive them :p

Anything below 80c should be very safe although lower temps are always better.

Testing 790/1125 at 1144mV now :)

Krugga what sort of temp you are getting in Heaven Bench at the moment?

Don't really know what it is, I can't really run Heaven Benchmark all day long, can I? ;)

My max stable overclock at 1144mV is 795/1125 at the moment, haven't overclocked the memory beyond it though.

56c at 45% fan speed in BFBC2, testing Heaven 2.1 now.

EDIT: Doesn't go above 55c in Heaven and settles on at 54c and 42% fan speed. It just crashed on me a few minutes after the benchmark has finished. Back to 790/1125 testing.

I thought you said you manged to overclock to 875MHz/1250MHz on your card...so what is the problem then (besides you think it slow down)...and was there some problem with the voltage as well?

that it crashes when ever i thouched the voltage and at 875mhz/1250mhz it was a lot slower in furmark and heaven...

Alright, got mine running at 1200voltage/800core/1100 memory stable in BC2 for a hr or so. Max temp 62C.

I can run just fine with lower volts/higher clock in a benchmark, but for some reason it crashes in a game :/

wish i got teh hawk GTX460s now :(

So you're unhappy with one msi product and you wish you'd got the other msi product? The hawks just this with a 460 in it instead of the 5850 if your gonna swap go for the Gigabyte superoc or the asus both brands have better overclocking support than MSi.

my freind has a 460 hawk and his is awesome i have had a look at it. no other msi stuff i have had trouble with... and to be fair its not been a bad card its but its not the awesome overclocker its sold as

hope to hell my card works when I set it up in the new year. Could be gutted if its borked when I get it back to my pc :)

Im buying a new card, would people recommend this card or a XFX 6850??

This is faster and overclocking would be a beast 'cause of the cooler.

if you can push your budget up a bit more(into the £200-£220 region) then get a 6950 and unlock to 6970, have a look at the sticky at the top of the graphics card section.

Loving this card, not loving the CCC flickering bug on my second monitor but I can put up with it XD

Does oc'ing using afterburner void warranty? or is it not "like" cpu's and such?

The usual...overclocking the card does void the warranty, but there's no way for them to prove that you've been overclocking the card. Just don't be a honest fool and tell them you've been overclocking the card if you do RMA it back to the manufacturer :p If you are RMAing back to etailers though, I don't think they cares too much since they would just RMAing it back to the manufacturer for a replacement.

the coolers very good, but the fan speed is 55 at default
Yea...55% is a bit loud when just using the PC for normal use when no gaming...I've set the fanspeed at around 40% at idle, so I won't hear it. I think anything under 50% fanspeed you won't really hear it over the case fans, but 55% fanspeed the noise is definitely noticable.
