The Official Nexus S Thread

When can I use it to replace my Oyster card and/or work ID badge??

:p

Ask your employer about your ID card. :p

Oyster is a different kettle of fish. The first ticketing barriers able to accept payments via contactless cards and NFC phones are due to be installed this year and the network may be ready for the Olympics.

Don't worry, you'll be able to use you NFC capable card/phone at McDonalds soon.

Will this ever get 720p support ? been reading on forums and apparently its a hardware issue that can't be fixed, below was one of the posts on twitter from someone at google.

@supercurio clock rate limitation of the SoC. Galaxy uses an external image processing part as a work around. Not enough PCB space in N.S.

Bit disappointing if true was thinking of getting one of these.

I was under the impression that the lack of 720p video is because the Android operating system does not do it natively and requires software such as HTC Sense to enable it. As the Nexus S is stock Android it can’t do 720p.

We may get it enabled but who knows. Personally the 720 x 480 video resolution is good enough for me.

If you fancy a read then take a look at this thread:

That page is a reasonable starting point unless you have a lot of time to kill.

I thought that but they seem to be saying something had to be left of the pcb from the galaxy s so without it the Nexus S can't support 720p but who knows.

OOI what is actually stopping me just "cloning" my Oyster card tag onto my Nexus S? When I put it (or even my Barclays debit card!) next to the phone, it says that it has captured the NFC tag.

What exactly can I do with that info?

Cheers,

Su

At this point in time nothing, it’s highly encrypted and there is no software written to communicate with what has been recognised. Most probably all you are seeing is the recognition of the presence of another device.

It's essentially a stripped version of the Galaxy S without Samsung's own add-ons (no native .avi video codecs as an example or 720p/1080p video recording).

I would consider it a bread and butter smartphone for 2011. After using it for 3 weeks, I realise that while its not the most feature rich out of the box, it has a lot going for it with the stock gingerbread which I absolutely adore. I like how I don't need to use software to connect to PC etc.

The exclusivity is also a major factor for me and the fact it comes unlocked out of the box is great.

Granted stock Android and good support are great in many respects, I can't help but feel the SGS2 blows this out of the water.

Yeah the Nexus line should get the best all rounder of a generation of android phones.

As for acessories for the Nexus S, I bought a Amzer Silicone Skin Jelly Case Cover for Google / Samsung Nexus S - Black from the famous rainforest named retailer and this seems to work out well and give the phone a grippy and comfortable feel. For £5 I think you get a reasonable quality item.

Yes well I didn't want to upset the people who have just this minute got a Nexus S and have now seen it spaffed upon by the SGS2 :p

No one’s upset, it's just a Galaxy MK II and nothing to do with the Nexus line. :)

You’re only trolling because every new phone is better than your crappy HD. :p

What? :p

The HD obliterates the Nexus S already, the SGS2 is just even better.

Of course people will be upset.
