Nexus S WiFi/3G bug

Anyone got issues with the WiFi/3G with this new update, when the WiFi is connected to a network the 3G icon remains visible in the starus bar, when infact it should disappear when conncted to a WiFi network.

If anyone has this issue please report it in the thread linked below over at the google mobile forum.

Nexus S, WiFi/3G issue after updating to Android 2.3.3 / I9020XXKB1 / GRI40

@Ol!ver, thanks for your input over at the google forums on this issue, much appreciated, btw, just for information, i'm the one who started the google thread, (fizzydx)

EDIT> I think i've found a workaround that solves this issue for now, or untill google can fix it, i haven't posted this over at the google forum because i think this issue going to be more widespread as the 2.3.3 update rolls out, also google needs to fix this pronto, i hope it helps.

After the update to 2.3.3 i noticed my APN settings had changed, i used to have two APN's for the T-Mobile UK network, one for mms and one for the internet, after the update i still had two APN's listed, but they where for two different networks, T-Mobile UK & Virgin Mobile, each of these APN's where combined internet & mms, so what i did was delete all APN's and created two new ones for T-Mobile only. listed below you will see both APN settings, before and after, the after one (the one i created) seems to work perfectly, so it seems we can't use a single combined APN, obviously you will need to find the APN settings for your network in the same format as the "AFTER" settings listed below, but google still need to fix this issue as a lot of people won't know how to fix it them selves.

BEFORE

Name > T-Mobile UK
APN > general.t-mobile.uk
Username > t-mobile
Password > tm
MMSC > http://mmsc.t-mobile.co.uk:8002
MMS proxy > 149.254.201.135
MMS port > 8080
APN type > default,supl,mms

AFTER

Name > T-Mobile Internet
APN > general.t-mobile.uk
Username > t-mobile
Password > tm
APN type > default < i tried putting "default, supl" here but the problem came back so i used "default" only

Name > T-Mobile MMS
APN > general.t-mobile.uk
Username > t-mobile
Password > tm
MMSC > http://mmsc.t-mobile.co.uk:8002
MMS proxy > 149.254.201.135
MMS port > 8080
APN type > mms

BTW, do you have any idea what the "supl" is used for, i've read that it is for A-GPS, but A-GPS seems to work but i'm not to shure, would it be possible for you test A-GPS after changing their APN settings to not include "supl".

The green WiFi indicator is grey half of the time too.

Doesn't it do that when it can't get a consistent connection to a Google account?

Regarding the colour temp change, after using the phone solidly since I nabbed the update last week, I have to say it's actually a lot better.... it gives everything a more natural tone overall and isn't as (over)saturated (IMHO) as before. Just my ten pence though.

Supposedly, though I'm at on a solid WiFi connection. Kill the mobile data connection and all of a sudden WiFi works fine. It's clearly a bug where the phone uses the 3G connection instead of WiFi, and telling it to turn off the mobile data connection forces it to use WiFi.

The wifi & 3g icons are white when connected to a network, they turn green when connected to a network plus google services, only one of these icons at a time should be showing, not both at the same time, the wifi icon will be grey if a wifi network is available but not connected.

The problem is, we now see both the wifi & 3g icons instead of just one at a time, this leads to connectivity issues like Ol!ver mentions, one icon can be green while the other will be white, or, both icons can be green, or, both can be white, so the phone gets mixed up and doesn't know how to resolve it and displays both wifi/3g icons at the same time, the only way to resolve the issue is to turn either wifi or 3g off, or change the apn settings.

Hey guys,

I'm going to look at an NS tomorrow (again!!) and might possibly buy it, although I mighht only be allowed to buy it over the phone via vofdafone.

Just a few queestions I hope you guys can answer.

1. has there been a fix for the video shooting? can it do 720p yet? (with update, custom rom or otherwise) [edit] read loads on this - doesnt seem like such a straightforward question afterall, feel free to ignore)
2. Does it have touch-to-focus or not? if not, has it been fixed / added yet?
3. is there anywhere on the phone where I can see the model number, as in i9020 ? I'm going to be looking at the white version which I suspect might be the newer i9023 with the SLCD screen.
4. how are people finding it so far? I've read through the entire thread ansd every ownder seems to be happy with it but I thought I'd ask again since it;s been a while. How's battery life going?

I've got the option of pretty much any android handset ont he market at the moment but I can get a good deal on the NS, and I really like it from previous demos.

cheers,
Rick

Hi guys,

I've just ordered the Nexus S white from vodafone and I'll have it on tuesday. After a lot of consideration and demoing it against other phones (desire HD) I've come to realise it's the one for me, and I can put up with the quirks that it has. I've still got the 7day cool off period to think about it though if I change my mind! I've ordered some screen protectors and a case though so I guess in my mind I've accepted it!

I'd like to officially smash some myths about the screen today. Some of you may know that there is now 2 versions of the nexus S; The i9020 and the i9023.

-The i9020 is the original phone with the super AMOLED screen. It's listed on the box as 'black/silver' (it's been speculated that items listed as black/silvber' on european sites are the newer i9023 version, this now doesn;t seem true)The i9020 was the phone that launched in carphone warehouse in december and that CPW are still selling today, vodafone or not.

-The i9023 is the newer handset released for the eauropean market, italy, russia and so on. This phone has a super clear LCD screen rather than the SAMOLED screen on the i9020. this is exclusive to vodafone at the moment.

Vodafone, in the uk have stokck of a black nexus S and a white nexus S. I thought that the black may have been 19020 and the white would be 19023 but it turns out that both phones are infact i9023.
I've just come back from my local vodaphone store and can confirm that it is the i9023 with an LCD screen. I then popper next door to CPW to see the nexus S and I can confirm the version they are selling is indeed the i9020 with the SAMOLED display.

which display did I prefer?
In all honesty I have to say that the SLCD screen was better. it's pin sharp and the blacks were more than acceptable. I was keen to go and see the SAMOLED version next door and when I did I saw all the flaws that pentile SAMOLED has - the green dotted line around the edge of the scrren, the fuzzy text and very grainy solid whites and greys. The blacks were very nice as to be expected on SAMOLED but that was about it. [edit] Still a very nice display though.

I have the choice between getting it from CPW or vodafone and I've chose to get the SLCD version. The artifacts on the SAMOLED screen would do my nut in. How this will affect battery life I don't know. I'm sure the 'samoled uses less power' thing can only go so far as most of the time I'm going to be looking at a white screen.

Glad you have made up your mind on the nexus s. Let us know how you get on. I have had mine over a month and I'm killing the battery as I'm on it almost constantly for emails, browsing and reading Pdf ebooks. Not sure if I had crap phones in the past but this seems the most stable and useable.

However reading the internet, there is a level of hatred with some customers on how bad the updates have been that has changed the colour temperature of the screen and other bugs. I personally haven't been experiencing problems but makes you wonder how unpopular this phone is to the mainstream.

Overall a decent phone for a reasonable price, that's why I got it.

My contribution to proceedings.

Fingers crossed Google look into it properly.

Hi guys,

I typed up a post yesterday but obviosuly didn;t submit it! :(

My phone arrived yesterday, and I ahve to admit that in the few days I was waiting for it I was almost going to cancel before it arrived. I guess I had just been reading too much hype and the temptation to just wait for what's around the corner was large. I decided to stick in and atleast excersise my 7day cool-off period to make my final choice.

at the moment it's a keeper. The only thing that can change now is if one of the other phones I was looking at has a definitive release date announced.

So I opted for the newer GT-i9023 Nexus S in white with the super clear LCD and it's stunning. I'm really pleased with my choice of the SLCD version over the SAMOLED version. Any new buyers should check out both first, of course, but my reccomendation is the slcd version.
I had a look at 2 mates' phones at uni today, the Desirte HD and Galaxy S - my 2 other choices on my shortlist - I'm still happy with my choice :)

Android is awesome; It's my first android device, but I have had an ipod touch for a while so I'm familiar with IOS. Really impressive operating system! I can certainly see what people have been on about.

Here's a couple of pictures of it. I would have found them quite useful before I bought it so hopefully someone else can find some use too.

notes:
-phone back has raised dotted texture rather than smooth - I can't remember what the black i9023 and i9020 have.
-phone interior is white
-buttons are white
-bezel is slightly thicker
-shape of the back *may* be different as some reports have shown - only comparing black models though. Can anyone saee any differences here?
my images were coming out with a blue cast to the screen, not really sure why so just ignore it.
-one of the images shows how blacks look on the screen, it's very hard to photograph to be honest, and depending on your monitor it might look terrible or brilliant and can be photographed to make it look terrible or brilliant so I wouldn't go off the picture to compare it. After comparing it to my mates galaxy S we both said the blacks on the superamoled were better but not by much; the blacks on the slcd were more than good enough and the pentile of the SAMOLED was very obvious in comparison.

viewing angles on the SLCD are superb. square angles (from the top the bottom and sides) are brilliant - the reflections on the glass take over before the image gives up. 3/4 angles do suffer from a little bit of washing out at extreme angles (almost flat) but I think this is just the nature of any display.

hope this helps; I'll have a million questions soon, so feel free to pick my brains about this model of the nexus S!

^^^

I wouldn't be able to go to something like this when SAMOLED was available

honestly mate, it's just the way cameras see it... the camera is given a massive chance for *any* light to accumulate and grow as the shutter stays open. As I said it's difficult to get across how the screen appears in real life through a photo as it's captured in a different way.

I could expose the photo much less and you would have inky blacks, but that would be cheating! It's like watching a demo of a new TV on youtube, or listening to a demo of a new music system on the radio! If I left the shutter open long enough the entire image would be a white-wash. Because the LCD is back-lit it's activly giving light out and into the sensor - unlike the black bezel, background and so on.

if you want to know the true difference - go and look at one in real life. I can't say fairer than that.

Here's a more 'natural' shot of it:

the photo still doesn't IMO reflect what the screen looks like in real life though.

Had this phone for a few days now. It's my fourth Android phone and it's good to be back (again...). Quite pleased with the phone but it is quite buggy. Problems so far:

  • The wifi connection bug
  • Settings not applying
  • Multi-choice boxes not appearing when selected
  • USB storage button mislabelled (says turn off to turn on)

Bit disappointed really... my Nexus One was never as buggy.
