*** The Official Nintendo Switch 2 ***

Just finished transferring my account across, I'm quite surprised how good the screen is, it's not OLED quality in terms of inky blacks but the higher sharpness and resolution are immediately noticeable, viewing angles aren't too bad either, darker games like Hollow Knight and Ori will definitely take a hit but better than expected, extra size is nice too, it makes using the unit on it's stand as a 'mini tv' a lot more useable, the magnetic controllers are a nice touch, kind of feels how Nintendo would've liked it to of been originally, other than that system feels nice snappy and responsive.

Just downloading MK now, looking forward to giving that a bash.
Great review, very similar feelings. Especially the screen.

Really enjoying BOTW atm. Guess all I needed was 60fps, a small bump in resolution and it to be on a Nintendo, never felt right playing it on pc despite the obvious technical advantages.

+1

I’ve been playing Zelda TOTK on switch 2 and it’s absolutely transformed the game from a blurry sub-720p unstable 30fps mess to a silky smooth high res ~4k 60fps experience.

I wish did something with the AF and AA in the older games, the Zelda game do look much better now but the game still lacks AA and AF which causes lots of shimmering on foliage and shadows

Due to Zelda's cartoon graphics I don't even notice the higher resolution, only notice the smooth 60fps and they could have left the resolution and used AA and AF instead

Is it true you can't turn on the switch 2 with an original Pro 1 controller? Seems a lot of on Reddit saying that this is officially correct, I can only use my Pro 1 controller if I turn on the Switch 2 using the power button on the system first and then the Pro 1 controller will connect.

Yes it's true but not sure why. Both controllers use Bluetooth

I tell you what, it sure is NOT easy to connect 3rd party controllers between the Switch 1 and 2 back to back…

Also, I can’t seem to get the Pro 2 to work with Switch 1, not sure if that works at all but I couldn’t get it to connect.

The 8BitDo Ultimate I got working on Switch 1 doesn’t want to connect to Switch 2.

The Cyclone 2 controller doesn’t want to connect to Switch 1 via Bluetooth some reason, and only worked with The 2.4ghz dongle after I had paired it to Switch 2 via Bluetooth.

I thought controllers can pair with more than 1 thing at a time? The other Switch was off at the time. (Or Sleep)

That is extremely frustrating, that bumps the price of the console up another £75 quid! sigh.

It’s was looking at all my controllers…

Switch 1 (I think it was £60 new back in 2017)
8BitDo Ultimate with dock, BT/2.4ghz paid £45
Cyclone 2 with dock BT/2.4ghz paid £42
Switch 2 £75.

By feel…Switch 2 Pro wins, really smooth.
Sticks feel Switch 2, it is so quiet and there is very little noise when the sticks hit the sides
Triggers - Cyclone 2. I am not sure if Switch controllers are analogue triggers if at all, it feels digital.
Face buttons - Nintendo
The tech inside, I think the Cyclone, with TMR sticks, analogue and digital triggers, dock, BT/2.4ghz, works with all platforms.

The only thing the Pro 2 controller does best is the wake up Switch feature and the Cyclone do having a Xbox layout perhaps let it down if playing Nintendo only games as you have to remember the ABXY is in a different spot.

Cancelled my pre-order a little while back, but went back on that earlier today :D

Some of my thoughts:

  • Build quality is a big improvement and the larger size results in much more comfortable play, even after extended play sessions, it feels great!

  • Overall, the display quality is quite decent, it's bright, good colours and viewing angles. But... and a big BUT... Motion blur / ghosting is very apparent. I can live with the reduced contrast going to an LCD from the OLED Switch, but the pixel response time on the Switch 2 display is slow, and it negates the 120hz experience of the display.

  • Battery life is not great and a couple of steps back from the OLED Switch. What also compounds the battery experience is how slow the Switch 2 charges, I've tested it at only pulling 13W from a charger, extremely slow when compared to other devices. The battery being only 5220 mAh capacity is nuts. The thickness of the device should have been increased to accommodate a larger battery. The recent ifixit tear down shows how small of an area Nintendo dedicated to the battery, it's not enough. There will be a SoC dye shrink in a couple of few years time and at the same time (hopefully) an OLED display upgrade, both will help with power consumption.... but yeah... it's a little painful right now watching the battery deplete at such a rate. New battery tech needs to start chiming in at some point!

  • The Pro 2 controller is the nicest controller I've ever used. It's lightweight and is a definite upgrade over the Pro. I'd say it feels above PS5 Edge and Xbox Elite controllers, making it somewhat a decent deal for a 'pro' controller. The sticks are buttery smooth, they feel absolutely wonderful.

  • Mario Kart World free roam feels a bit meh and disappointing, not much going on in the free roam world, not much interaction at all. MP is nuts and overall, it's fun, in bursts.

  • BoTW is now fantastic, I am so happy I've not bothered to play more than a couple of hours previously.

It's not officially compatible unfortunately.

No PC support for the Pro 2 out of the box either but hopefully Steam (and DS4) add support soon like they did for the Pro 1.

Good review, I wonder if thermals were also part of the challenge with the battery and that's why it's kinda small. I'm not a handheld gamer at all so battery/screen aren't really a factor for me - if Nintendo sold a 'home' edition that was just a box for a lower cost I'd have picked that up.

Yeah the Pro 2 is great, I'd have liked the D-Pad to have been a little bigger but I'm getting used to it. The Gyro is improved too apparently and has a bit less input lag which has made me order Splatoon 3(which also runs and looks better on Switch 2).
