***The Official OcUK Lego Thread***

I'm sitting on a sealed GT3 and pondering if it's worth selling or building. Not really one for scalping but I could do with the cash.

It's not scalping in my book. Scalping for me is ordering something limited like concert tickets to sell at profit.

There's no other way for people new to lego to get older sets unless some people buy to sell.

Also toying with selling my spare. It's hitting the 450gbp mark on a set that cost 170

I bought the batwing over 2x VIP weekend.
I bought 2 obviously

:D I'm not saying it's right/wrong but surely that's exactly the same. You purchased something you didn't want to use yourself with the intention of selling at a profit when the item of limited amount is still wanted by someone else.

I've always put scalping on items that still have a factory run or still avaliable but in short supply so you buy up a large amount to sell for profit while that is still made by the manufacturer. PS5, Graphic Cards etc. You don't offer any after sales support, you offer no warranty support etc.

Buying it and wait years later after it's discontinued, that's more in the line of an investment, I know the same can be said on scalping, that's "investing", but to me, the latter is morally more on the right side of wrong. Because the product when in production for such a long time, there was a time when it was in good supply. It was not limited run when it's on sale. Meaning people who buy it used now isn't forced to buy it used because the market never let them, they are buying it used because they missed the window.

I don't see it as scalping either. It's no longer on sale so there is no where else to get it.

Same goes if I decide to sell any of my NES or SNES games. Some will sell for over £100. I'm no raising the price or setting it over the original RRP. It's due to the demand no its no longer purchasable new.

Lego is an investment and its always worth getting bigger sets or ones that will easily be in demand after Lego retire them.

The problem is having somewhere to store them, can you imagine a loft full of falcons (and an intersting insurance claim if there was ever an issue).

I don't think so.

With something limited in terms of number if you buy 10 you've literally taken the opportunity away from 10 people to buy at cost

For limited time runs buying 10 makes no difference. Anyone going to buy can still buy at cost.

It is the same, just with Lego its a longer/larger limited run. They only make X items over a period of time, if you hadn't bought that second set at RRP or discount it would still be sat on a shelf for someone else to buy at that price.

Like I said before I'm not knocking anyone for doing that, but it's buying an asset at a point in time preventing someone else from buying and then selling at a later date when availability is gone and prices are pushed up.

Rather than limited quantities Lego products tend to be on sale for a set amount of time. So if you don't buy it in the 1-2 years that most sets are on sale for and you miss out and then decide you want it after it's retired then buying at inflated prices is unavoidable really.

I still want the Flintstones set but it's pretty much doubled in price since it retired. I wouldn't say it's the same as buying and reselling tickets for massive profit.

Likewise, I want the Simpsons House too…I wouldn't call the pre-owned market scalping, if someone did buy like 10 sets hoping to make some money like 7 years on, that's good foresight tbh, I won't be bitter about it.

And the key difference for me is that they didn’t deprive legit customers of the opportunity to buy as Lego don’t limit the number of sets sold so anyone who wants one when they are on sale has the opportunity to buy one at rrp. Much different when scalpers buy loads of concert tickets as this deprives people of the opportunity to purchase a limited quantity of something at rrp.

I don't believe that's the case. The runs are often extended. The saturn v was re released. There isn't a set number of sets

Not impressed with Lego, just phoned them up, theres a huge delay on the order for the McLaren car. I paid for shipping of 2-4 days free delivery on Monday and still not here and no sign of it being posted anytime soon. They didn't mention anything about possible delays until after I had bought it. It's my son's Birthday tomorrow. Luckily I have just ordered one for click and collect at a high st retailer who must have only just got stock of it today as I haven't seen it stocked by them until today, and it's not far away from me, the other nearest stores are 40-50 miles away as it's sold out pretty much everywhere else.

Where did you buy it from? I bought it from lego.com at midnight the day it went on sale and it is still in the warehouse.

Amazon - Had Lego order at 8.30am the morning of release - they took money, and then about 5pm same night, got "it's on backorder"

Cancelled with them and ordered next day delivery from Amazon.

Ordering from Lego direct is always really slow now following Brexit. The warehouse is in Belgium, it will arrive 2 days after dispatch but there is all the paperwork to deal with first to get it through customs without any charges to be applied, particularly if it’s over £135.

If the warehouse is backed up as it has done a lot with covid measures, then yeh it takes awhile.

I’m not defending them BTW, they should give realistic lead times but that’s why it is like it is.
