** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

Can't you use the macro software to change the affected keys into UK symbols. Maybe ask razer for some UK key caps from the ulitmate keyboards :P

Yup, @ key is changed in software, only big change with US KB's is the backslash key which is now above the enter.

For the money this is probably the cheapest and only way you will get Cherry Browns in the UK

I have an Qpad MK-80 and my brother has a Zowie Celeritas, I really like the Celeritas for gaming, but because of the amount of typing I do, I prefer the Mk-80.
The MX brown switches are very good, probably the closest to rubber dome keyboards like the G-19, so the transition should be very easy for you.

Doesn't the MK-80 use Cherry blues?

Not really there are plenty of places to get cherry brown keyboards in the UK, also US keyboards have a longer shift key which is easier to use and I use shift a lot when gaming.

I thought I'd mention Steelseries have an anniversary deal of sorts active at the moment. You can get 30% of their products by using an 'EPIC30' code during checkout at their site so the 6Gv2 becomes €55.99 for example instead of €79.99, which is not bad considering it has Cherry Black switches. I can't afford it myself at the moment and there's a slight sting in the tail in the form of shipping fees of around €26 which kind of cancel out the saving but oh well, someone might be interested.

I'm seriously considering getting one of these now. I have been using a wireless HP super flat keyboard, which is very nice to game and type on. It uses scissor switches so much better feel than rubber dome. Only problem is that because its wireless its not ideal for gaming and sometimes lags. Also the batteries don't seem to last long at all and they have ran out mid game a few times now.

Went back to my old Hiper rubber dome keyboard and it felt like typing on jelly :(.

Are mechanical switches at all similar to scissor switches? how much more travel do they have compared? Really like the feel of scissor switches but if mechanical are better then i'd rather get one of them.

Scissors are practically worse than domes...

The travel in most cases is double on mechanical keyboards compared to scissor, plus mechanical keyboards don't have any bounce to them. I think you would be best with a Cherry brown switch, the feedback is sort of similar to scissor switch, but you get the benefits of mechanical, like long term durability.

Yes

How do you know it has Cherry Brown switches?

It says on their website :)

Yeah I noticed they had a US layout only so I'm holding out on the purchase at the moment. I sent in a question about it but the guys at the store didn't know so they forwarded it on. I have yet to receive another response about it though!

Edit: the problem with the US layout is the fact that the enter key is far smaller and the backslash key has moved! I much prefer the UK layout.
Edit2: The main thing attracting me to the black widow is the matte look and the lights.. My room is poorly lit because I have brown vertical blinds and I have them closed constantly.

Thanks. I think I might be better off trying one before buying then as i'm so used to a short travel and low laptop style keys it might take some getting used to.

Why? They have a lighter, quieter and shorter keystroke than domes and last a lot longer. For me they feel really nice to type on, although i don't do a lot of typing. For FPS gaming they are much better for me with the shorter keystroke.

Just get a USB lamp on your desk. I have one, it's LED and can be set fairly dim over the keys if that is what you want.

I have a Noppoo choc mini mechanical, with cherry browns. It's a very nice keyboard, lovely to type on and great for gaming. The keys are printed with dark print, which looks really nice but means they are invisible in the dark. I was planning to learn to touch type, I am about 80% there - so sometimes have to flick on the lamp.

Don't get me wrong I can touch type but I like the led lit keys. The design looks better to me as well. I think the other mechanical keyboards look rather boring to be honest :P

Is that on the Cherry website, or the Razer website? I couldn't see it on the product page :(

I *might* wait until I can order a UK layout WASD keyboard. But not sure. Still not certain on blacks or browns, will definitely need to test them :)

I couldn't find it easily but luckily I had the page in my browser history
http://www.razerzone.com/minisite/blackwidow/faq

First question it tells you the cherry switches used.

I'm waiting for a uk layout personally before I buy.

I have the Zowie Celeritas and, if I remember rightly, I requested that OCUK get quite a few in stock for their own store! It is a fantastic keyboard - an absolute joy to type on. In my opinion the Cherry MX Browns are the best 'all round' switches for both typing and gaming, and I've certainly done my fair share of both on this board! It is solidly built, heavy, simple and dependable. The media keys and extra Zowie gaming stuff are a nice addition that you do not otherwise get with most other boards-- especially boards with the highly sought after Brown switches (e.g. Das Silent, Filco Majestouch). I highly rate this keyboard and would especially recommend to any FPS/RTS gamers (to benefit from the response technology on the PS/2 port) or for any long-term typists (like myself) for the nice middle-ground.

Great for WASD gaming though. There's so little travel on the keys, it makes movement smoother and faster, at least, this is my experience in quakelive with the Lycosa.

Ordered the new Blackwidow Stealth from Razer, should be here tomorrow. Matte finish and no more clicky keys, sounds perfect...I hope

Lots of people will buy this, but like most Razer products, including my Lycosa which had a touch pad issue and I now have a replacement, I can already hear the cries of "I've just bought a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Stealth Edition and the backlighting keeps switching off, the keys are sticking, when I press the spacebar I get an electric shock, the escape key keeps exploding, the media keys keep randomly starting some abba tune that I never heard of before, the macro keys don't work, and I have to keep unplugging it and reconnecting it because the gimmicky built in food dispenser keeps stalling."
