** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

The MK85 looks really nice but it seems kind of pricey  I've also heard some mixed reports about backlit mechanical keyboards (that in general their build quality isn't as solid as non-backlit keyboards).

Aye its very pricey but I'm still looking at the corsair K90 which uses the same switches I think.

I'm using the K60 (also uses cherry reds) and it's very nice indeed :) It's a bit annoying that the function keys are domed rather than mech but it's such a rarity that I use those keys that it's not a big deal.

The reason I went for the K60 over the 90 (aside from price) is that I really don't care about macro keys (software macros seem a little more reliable in my experience) and I quite like the solid metal finish to the top of the keyboard casing. My cats love to try and get cat hair everywhere and this seems to clean up quite nicely.

Thanks for this, useful info. The lack of the backlight is what pushes me more towards the K90 as it'll come in really handy as my student rooms light is next to useless at the best of times. Any comments as to how loud the keyboard is to use whilst gaming? The thing I have at the moment is far from silent.

Also, how is it to type on in general? Take a bit of getting use to?

Loudness: It is a fair chunk louder than my old crappy Microsoft X4 keyboard but as I've written above this is mostly due to me not being used to the low attenuation force required to type. I'm currently constantly bottoming out the keys, which I reckon will die down (with a bit of effort in terms of adjustment) in the next week or two.

Typing feel: Really really awesome. Even not being used to it I'm finding it a lot easier to type in terms of finger fatigue and general typing accuracy. I'm not looking forward to going back to a non-mech keyboard once I'm back in work tomorrow.

Gaming: I've mostly FPS gamed on it but I haven't had any problems at all. No issues with accidentally pressing keys when I shouldn't do or anything like that. I can understand if someone has quite clumsy typing fingers that they might have an issue with this though.

Just had a look at your site at the MK85 which is also a red switch I think and it didn't seem that loud at all. Can you confirm this? The rubber dome dell keyboard I have at the moment is actually quite loud as its a flat key design (and cheap).

It depends how hard you type, and how cheap your current keyboard is :P Compared to my Logitech G15, they are much louder.

Not seen any issues from QPAD on either of the keyboards i have, but the QPAD keyboards are actually a rebranded keyboard which has a solid build.

my razer black widow ultimate feels extremely well built...

As does my Qpad. The only difference I can think of is a small LED above the switch and keycaps to let light through. Not sure how that could have a big enough effect on the general build quality for comments to be made.

Browns are better for RTS for max APM, because of where the reset point is on teh blues, i would say it is not as good for RTS.
For FPS you are ok with any switch tbh, they all have their merits and downfalls. If you want a linear switch, the reds are the way to go, i find them easier to type and game on.

Yes but most people when double tapping and spamming in rts games don't float the keys. Everyone I know completely releases the key each time, so double tapping and spamming is a non issue. Browns are only better if you actually float your keys a lot.

Okay theres a lot of info in this thread so I've prolly missed some but could someone highlight some of the options for for a UK layout, NKR, with Numpad keys and full size enter key.

Preferably no backlit.

£125 should be good enough for most options? Not really looking for customisation pimp stuff either.

Filco Majestouch-2, NKR, UK 105, your choice of cherry key colour.

If you don't want to order from out of the country your only real options are filco and steelseries if you don't want backlighted products etc. A Full size board will cost you about £120. You could also get a cherry G80 for £60. I might be forgetting some others but that's all I can think of atm.

I did look at that (had seen it mentioned a lot in this thread) But it seems to offer less than the qpad for more money?

no back lights
no keyboard rest
no media keys
no usb hub
no audio ports
no key puller
no alternate colour WASD keys

Is it good enough to justify the extra price?

Ordered the tenkeyless with the red wasd keys
Did you get the brown cherry keys?
The Filco wristrests were incredibly expensive on top of an already expensive keyboard so I decided to give them a miss.
And how are you finding the lack of rest? I like the cheap plastic rest on my Logitech, and while the leather filco looks nice, I can't pay £50 for one.
