** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

Pretty much that.

I went for the Qpad because it has audio jacks for my headset, could have the brown switches, also a left windows key, something I use often and didn't want to lose.

Is there any reason you went for the mk80 over the mk85. I have to admit I prefer blue backlighting so that would have swung it for me.

Is there any places in the U.K that have these on display so I can go and have a go on one? Intrigued about all the fuss, currently have a Sidewinder X4 but wouldn't mind having a tazz on one of the mechanical keyboards.

Best you will find is maybe a blackwidow that has a small key area open on the packaging, so you can try before you buy. Not what shops you could go to try it though.

Yup, went for it simply because I don't need full NKRO (It's 6KRO with USB on the 80 anyway, which was an upgrade for me) and for the blue lights as opposed to red.

Many people say that blacks are best for fps and blues/browns for rts etc. I think it's due to the fact you don't really need to spam keys in fps games and it's harder to press a wrong key with blacks.

That is what I have read as well. Well thanks for your responses I am think I am now set on the Steelseries keyboard. Like I said, it will match my mouse and the black keys are probsbly my best bet. Best thing is a local store has some in stock and I can go and get one on Saturday. They have sold out all over the place online.

Browns are better for RTS for max APM, because of where the reset point is on teh blues, i would say it is not as good for RTS.
For FPS you are ok with any switch tbh, they all have their merits and downfalls. If you want a linear switch, the reds are the way to go, i find them easier to type and game on.

I'm very happy with my reds (FPS game a lot and I don't find that I have issues with accidentally pressing keys). I play a little SC2 too and I haven't noticed any strange issues.

Im not implying there are any issues with the red for SC2, just that once players reach a certain level, skill wise, having some feedback can be helpful. There are some insane videos of a guy using a filco with browns going at 250+ APM.

Ah, I didn't mean to suggest you were saying that. Was just feeding back my experiences :)

Are the reds loud to type on? Quite fancy the corsair M90, even though its not full mechanical. The multimedia keys are essential as my girlfriend prefers me to use my headphones when playing games if shes in the room with me and going into an options menu to adjust volume to an acceptable level whilst in the middle of BF3 online isn't exactly idea lol.

Order straight from Qpad and get a mk-85 with red switches. Blue back lighting and very light and quiet keys. You can only get the red switches for the mk85 straight from qpad though. You could also choose pretty much any switch.. even the noisy blue switches and then just buy some O-ring dampers.

Thanks I'll have a look shortly.

How much do you want to spend? £160 would get you a topre... ;)

A what? I haven't really got a budget, it just has to fit the bill perfectly though!

I'm using the K60 and it's quite loud but I think it'll quieten down quite a bit once I get used to the low attenuation force required for typing on it. The noise seems to mostly come from me bottoming-out the keys when I type.

I found exactly the same, i have been using blues for a few months and rarely bottom out, so i was surprised with the sound, even though the blues click. If you click the link in my sig you can see a review, at some point i do a sequence of about 15 seconds where you can hear the sound. The microphone was placed roughly the distance you would sit away from the keyboard, but at about 30cms in height, so it appears slightly louder.

Just ordered the Steelseries 6G V2 with black switches. Was going to collect from a large PC chain, but just found a place online for £74 who have it in stock. They have told me it should be with me on Friday.

I shall do a mini review with piccies after a nights gaming on BF3. :)

Just had a look at your site at the MK85 which is also a red switch I think and it didn't seem that loud at all. Can you confirm this? The rubber dome dell keyboard I have at the moment is actually quite loud as its a flat key design (and cheap).

The MK85 looks really nice but it seems kind of pricey  I've also heard some mixed reports about backlit mechanical keyboards (that in general their build quality isn't as solid as non-backlit keyboards).
