** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

I have a cherry G80-3000 with cherry MX blues and have a IBM model M. Epic keyboards.

I got a Cherry G80-3000 over the weekend and it feels really cheap and awful. All of the keys feel uneven, the key markings look like someone has Tipex'd them on and the plastic it is made of seems to be low quality. Have I just got a bad 'un? :(

It was $52.40. Altogether it came to $182.39 which is about £116. Which is cheaper than a Filco. With as good if not better build quality (from what ive read), laser etched keys and a whole bunch of custom options. Not bad if you ask me.

OK, for those following, you may be interested to hear the customs charges I unfortunately got hit with. Its always a bit of a gamble. Altogether the VAT and 'clearance fee' came to £31.23. That brings the total Ive spent on this keyboard to £147.23 which is quite pricey compared to the £120 youll pay for a Filco. That is with the more expensive red switches though which are $10 more, plus the extra custom options and key sets means it may well be worth the extra if those are features you're interested in.

I guess it depends what you're looking for. If you're interested in the custom options, laser etched keys or mx red switches you're better off paying a bit extra and going for the WASD. If you just want a classic looking, well constructed mechanical go for the Filco.

They attempted delivery today so ill pick my WASD up tomorrow. Ill try and post some pics when I get my hands on it.

Can't you just order a custom key set from WASD and fit them onto a Filco board?

Surely they are just Cherry fit and the clearances around the key-tops are very similar?

But then I'd be paying about £150 for a filco with wasd keys. I may as well just get a wasd.

Ok but I bought a Filco for £120. I also bought a few extras like blue WASD keys and a key puller etc...
Final bill is around £140 anyway. It's not a budget decision.

What does the WASD get you that the Filco doesn't. I know the WASD is popular but aside from the custom tops I'm not sure why.

Well you cant buy the UK keyset just yet and even if you could your looking to pay $39.99 which is probably a little more than the difference in price so your not saving anything really.

I wanted the MX Reds so that want a easy option with the Filco. But other than the custom keys there's not really any difference, I believe the build quality is the same and they may even be made by the same OEM. I also wanted to support what is a tiny little start up with a close link to the enthusiast community. The guy that runs it regularly posts on geekhack and seems to just want to be the best he can in his little niche.

Yeah true.
How much time do you spend on Geekhack? I was slightly absorbed for a couple of days then got over it. In reality it's very silly. The chief protagonist may be very knowledgeable but comes across as real prat too.
