** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

Just got my Filco Magestouch 2 Ninja with Cherry Browns. I had a Steelseries 7g previously that got RMA'd and refunded but oh man I can tell the difference between the blacks and browns.

Serious gamers (Excluding RTS) should go with blacks imo. Not having the bump means you don't need to bottom out during games, whereas with the browns it's kinda hard not to bottom out and incredibly fatiguing.

Gonna give it a few days and might send it back and get a black kitted board instead.

That aside, the Filco is amazing. The 'ninja' keycaps with the legends printed on the front of the keys rather than the top looks so good. When I decide whether to keep this or get a black switch board I think I might eventually roll all blank keycaps for that l33t hax0r look.
But blacks take more force to actuate than browns, don't they?

They take more force, but you don't have to crash them down in-game, you can sort of just pulse your fingers if you learn how much pressure it takes to activate them, which isn't that hard imo.

Yes they are harder, people say that the harder ones are better for games such as RTS.. as the keys are stiffer meaning they reset quicker.. you can spam more as a result.

Lot's of top RTS players prefer browns/blues because it has a 'float' point that you can feel, meaning it's supposedly easier to double tap with those switches, because you don't need to wait for them to reset before pressing them again.

Going to get my first mechanical keyboard this week because I am fed up with my faulty Razer Lycosa. Keys stop working randomly and attracts dust a lot!

So after doing some research on the different types of key switches I like the look of brown or blacks.

Now I am stuck between getting a Filco or a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate. The Filco is very basic but it looks like it will be faultless and will be a very well built piece of kit, however the Razer has a backlight and macro keys which is very tempting because I prefer to play with my light off at night and the macro keys would be useful for Starcraft 2.

What are peoples opinions on the Razer? Or should I just go with the Filco?

Not tried the Razer myself, but firstly I think that board uses blue switches so i'm not sure if that'll suit you.

From my experience with other Razer products generally they're quite good, even if a touch gimmicky. My lycosa served me well for a long time so I can't really fault them.

I'm still in love with my new Filco. It does look kind of plain on my desk but the build quality is exceptional.

I reckon it's down to what you want more ultimately. As much as I want to say the Filco is the better board there's too many people who love their Black Widows it would be a pointless statement. Of course if you want brown or black switches the Razer is out.

I believe the Zowie Celetrais or whatever it's called is a solid brown switch board with backlighting so that might be worth a look at.

After having my heart set on a WASD for quite a while, I have decided to go for a Filco Ninja Tenkeyless (with browns), and just completed the order. A variety of things swayed me and this will be my first mech., so i'm interested to see how I get on with it.

Still unconvinced by my Celeritas after a couple of weeks. The spacebar seems to be getting worse if anything - sometimes it kinda sticks down and takes a long time to come back up, so the response is inconsistent. Been reading online and it seems I'm not the only one, I will try asking Zowie for a replacement spacebar but knowing my lack of prowess with all things mechanical I will probably screwup the replacement :)

Oh the irony.....my company must have dumped 100-200 of mechanical keyboards (old grey and beige IBM etc) a couple of years ago, and got nice new shiney dell/HP ones of inferior quallity. If only I had known, because my company ask If anyone wants anything before dumping stuff or giving it to charity.

Could have sold them for £30+ a pop no doubt, ah well.

I'm looking at Black cherry keys as I'm FPS player only, but can't seem to find Steelseries 6Gv2 any where atm, I'm sure i saw it for sale over the weekend on a site. Anyway, trawling through these threads I noticed someone say you can get individual keys If you want to test browns, reds or blues. I'd only need 4 of each to test.

May just search for a Cherry keyboard.

edit: searching about maybe £30+ was a bit hopeful, but anyone on a budget, get a second hand beige (with cherry keys you want, obviously) If you're not worried about looks.

I remember when there were only one terminal at work with that IBM keyboard left, even though it was old and beige it was quite satisfying to type on compared to the newly upgraded dell computers with dell keyboards.

Ordered the ninja hopefully it arrives before Fridays.

Mine was the same, i sent them an email and got a new spacebar in the post 2 days later. I compared them and it seems that the original was warped or formed incorrectly. Just email them.

Blacks are by far the best for FPS gaming IMO but horrid for typing (I've settled with the Ozone Strike) - my old mech keyboard had some kinda clears that seemed to have almost all the advantages of blacks but also really good for typing but they seem really hard to find decent keyboards using them. Blacks just seem to have far better precision/response in FPS games than any other type of keyboard especially if your trick jumping/strafing or other moves.

I thought and said this a few weeks ago, but I think the difference is kinda negligible now i've got used to browns, it just took a while to adjust.

It felt VERY strange in TF2 jumping to begin with but find it perfectly fine now.

Given that, if I could justify the cost, I probably would have a keyboard with blacks in just for shooters.

Ok, I'm thinking of getting a mech keyboard. The main game I play is StarCraft 2. I don't care about macro keys, backlighting or media keys, and I prefer tenkeyless so I have more deskspace. What would you guys recommend?

I've done a bit of research and like the look of the Filco Majestouch-2 Tenkeyless UK with brown switches. Would this be a good fit for my needs? I play some FPS occasionally but as I said I mainly play SC2. I do a fair amount of typing mainly posting on forums etc, but I don't do much typing for anything important eg. a job so it's not my priority.
