** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

but we're discussing Mechanical Keyboards and plenty of people who've come in here don't game. This thread is technically in the wrong section.

I'm not saying you can't buy a mechanical keyboard if you can't touch type. It just doesn't make much sense, what benefits do you get?
Apart from varying actuation forces.

Well the benefits for gaming as I understand them are better feel and responsiveness, especially using black switches for FPS gaming (which is why I'm getting one). I'm not saying the benefits are huge - well actually that's something I'm soon to find out. But my understanding is that lots of people buy mechanical keyboards purely for gaming, not typing.

This is starting to confuse me now.

Everything I had read thus far suggested a mechanical kb was far better than a membrane kb (my use 75% gaming btw).

I don't touch type brilliantly so are you saying don't bother buying one if it's just for gaming

Hmm, well, the Filco I bought recently came with a key puller, the clear plastic keyboard cover and a PS/2 adapter. Also, as I bought the Ninja, it came with optional blank Windows keys.

That's the reason why you got the key puller as you got the ninja version. I just had the normal regular version.

You have to ask yourself a few questions.

Do you have the money?
Do you want the edge no matter the cost? (Gaming, although this can be argued if you need macro keys)
Do you like the feel of a mechanical switch?
Do you like the click clack sound?
Do you want a keyboard that takes up less space?

There are so many reasons to buy a mechanical keyboard but at the end of the day if you don't play professionally then it isn't something you NEED for gaming. As with anything it is just one of those luxurys.
Presented with the choice of getting a gaming keybaord which had features I would never use (usb ports, mic ports, extra screen, macro keys etc) I opted for a quality mechancial keyboard that I know is going to last me far longer than a membrane based one. I also fell in love with mechanical switches after trying them out in store.

Btw all of the answers you seek are in this thread :p

They last longer?

I'm looking for something to replace my ailing 'board and stumbled across a few threads much like this one elsewhere. One of them had me looking at a mechanical keyboard with a near-identical layout - the Truly Ergonomic. Comments?
Very true. All-in all if you can afford it you might as well buy it if you want one.

Yes when they play RTS games. Pro FPS gamers have been using rubber dome for years and it's not something that will bring a world of change.

Well if you can't touch type then the majority of the benefits are gone (except lasting longer but KBs just have approximate lifespans). I'm unsure of what the benefit in non-rts games are unless you need the key rollover count.

IMO the biggest benefit of a mechanical keyboard is the reduced strain with prolonged typing as I'm at my desk basically nearly everyday for 7'ish+hours.

I kinda lost interest after following a few discussions; there was some concern that certain keys couldn't be replaced due to their unusual shape. And I'd much rather have a proper UK layout anyway.

Right now I've got my heart set on either a Filco Ninja or the Quick Fire Rapid.

I'd go with the Filco. No offence to any fanboys but I will always stick by that CM/Corsair etc should just stick to cases/hardware.

I'm going to try a mechanical kb out at a large well known expensive pc shop (then buy it online).

My fingers are not as young as they used to be and any help to stop me trying to push the keys through my G15 must be worth looking into.

MK-85 looks the best bet for me though as red switches and backlighting sound ideal so better be pleasant to the wife.

My Majestouch 2 keyboard with brown switches arrived a few hours ago and what a joy it is to type on. The build quality is outstanding compared to my G15. I have already noticed a difference on how superior it is to type on compared to other non-mechanical keyboards I have had in the past.

This is my first mechanical keyboard and I will not be going back to rubber dome keyboards. It didn't come with a key puller so I’m glad I bought that separate to change out my wasd and esc keys and give it a bit more colour.

I'm probably going to get a full yellow keycap set from WASD keyboards.

Would all those keycaps fit on the majestouch 2? I have herd a few people say that some keycaps might not fit on certain keyboards because of the way the keyboards are designed?

I only ask because i might want to change out the keys at a later date if/when the lettering on the keys start to degrade.

Thanks.

I dont see any reason why not except for the enter and space bar keys. Other than that they're all the same.

Pretty sure they'll fit. WASD do all colours XD
