** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

Yes when they play RTS games. Pro FPS gamers have been using rubber dome for years and it's not something that will bring a world of change.

Well if you can't touch type then the majority of the benefits are gone (except lasting longer but KBs just have approximate lifespans). I'm unsure of what the benefit in non-rts games are unless you need the key rollover count.

IMO the biggest benefit of a mechanical keyboard is the reduced strain with prolonged typing as I'm at my desk basically nearly everyday for 7'ish+hours.

Hmmm, well as I said my understanding was that black switches were suited to FPS gaming, and not much else, which is why I got one. If not, I'll be returning my new keyboard ASAP :D

Not completely sure but I'd vouch the Filco has much better build quality.

IIRC they are made in the same factory, along with some other common brands of mech keyboard too.

The quickfire rapid is undoubtably the best value 'simple' mech keyboard out there. Filco's have some advantages though, such as the availability of brown switches, less irritating branding, and ninja keycaps. Not sure if they justify the price difference though.

I bought a filco cos I didn't want to wait months until the quickfire rapid was released in the UK.

You're right. Black switches are great for FPS but not so good for everything else. Blues best for typing, and brown are the middle ground. Red's are somewhere between blacks and browns.

Any type of mech switch will be much better than a membrane keyboard no matter what you're using it for.

Figured this is the best place to ask for a little advice I don’t do much pc gaming and what I do is mainly racing sims which I have a wheel for. I have been looking at getting a mechanical keyboard for a while but without the chance to try one I have been put off by the price. However at the gadget show few weeks ago I got a change to play around with some, The red and black felt like a stiffer smoother doomed keyboard. Trying the Brown and Blue switches I like the feeling of the actuation especially trying it out for normal typing. I have narrowed it down to either

-Qpad MK-80 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-000-XM&groupid=702&catid=23&subcat=2107

Or

- Zowie Celeritas Pro Gaming http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-004-ZW

My query is does anyone have either and can recommend them? Or recommend a better one? Also trying out the blue switches they didn’t sound loud at the gadget show though that was in a hall full of background noise but watching youtube vids they never seem that loud compared to some of the dome keyboards I already have.

Got the MK-80 and I can recommend it. The overall build quality and feel is excellent. The keys are a little louder than the domed Eclipse3 I upgraded from but it just adds to the feel IMO.

Both good keyboards, the Zowie keys are not laser etched, so the print will begin to rub off after a couple months. The Qpad is a great keyboard, it all depends on if you dont mind the sound, you get used to it, but some prefer the less noisy browns.

Both browns and blues are significantly louder than the majority of membrane keyboards. Browns can be very quiet if you don't bottom out the keys (which is hard) but blues click no matter what.

My advice would be to consider the CM storm quickfire rapid. IIRC it's being released in the UK soon and can be bought with brown switches. Don't quote me on that though

Have the Zowie, love the Zowie. Prefer the Brown over the Red switch infinitely.

According to Ace Modder in the thread in latest news section it wont come with brown switches. Also I need a numpad as comes in very handy come photoshop. Also I ruled out reds and blacks as I prefered the feel of the switch over the linear switches.

The Qpad seems the one for me but not sure I could live with the noise of blue switches considering how loud some people make them out to be. More researched required me thinks.

Not sure what the hype is about black switches. They are tiring for anything other than strict gaming. I would not wish any man to have to type an essay or long letter on a black switch keyboard.

Indeed - blacks are second to none for FPS gaming and possibly some other genres but you have to be a sucker for punishment to do much typing on them. (Currently rocking the Ozone Strike for FPS gaming).

How have you found the Strike? Got one arriving this week :)

Would all those keycaps fit on the majestouch 2? I have herd a few people say that some keycaps might not fit on certain keyboards because of the way the keyboards are designed?

I only ask because i might want to change out the keys at a later date if/when the lettering on the keys start to degrade.

Thanks.
Yeah they would. WASD have a compatibility chart for future reference.

I'm gonna go for brown switches when/if I finally get a mech keyboard. Though as a climber, guitarist and engineer, my fingers get a lot of work out. Everyone saying black keys are hard to type on, actually sounds appealing to me.

How are black keys compared to an average rubber dome keyboard? I've only tried rubber domes and white alps, and I don't really know how they compare to cherry mx black switches.

In that case, go for the Filco Majestouch 2 with browns (I'm sure you've heard of it). It is available in the UK with a quick google. It's pricey, but it fits your needs perfectly.

I've got the TKL ninja version with browns and the feel and build quality is stunnig. Can't recommend it highly enough.
