** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

Filco Majestouch-2 User here, with Brown MX switches. First mechanical keyboard but will not be going back. Would love to try a red as the 'notchy'ness sometimes distracts me if i press they key from an angle and not straight down.

Very expensive items, for what they are, but worth it in my opinion.

I am thinking of getting the MajesTouch 2 with brown switches as my first mechanical keyboard. Hmm.

i hummed and haa'd about getting it as i appreciate its a lot of money for a keyboard, but once I bought it i was so glad I did. I have to type on a horrible £10 HP keyboard at work (as I am right now) and its horrible, when i go home my fingers are so appreciative.

The other thing about the Filco is the full keyboard rollover. You can press any keys and another key will work still unlike cheap membrane keyboards. Not sure if your a gamer or not, but i was sick of not being able to move forward, sprint and also side step at the time, pressing the 3rd key would just make my board *beep*.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for your help :). I ordered with the red WASD and ESC keys along with a keypuller. I have been reading this thread over the past few days and going by what other people have been saying i think brown switches would be best for me as my first mechanical keyboard. I mostly use for typing and about 30% gaming.

I don't understand the need for a back light on a keyboard?

I actually prefer to type in the pitch darkness, I seem to type a lot better.

Because not everyone can touch-type. Why assume all people have this skill?

Plus it's like the LEDs on PC fans. They look cool? XD

Your welcome, from your useage description I would hazard a guess that the brown MX switches will be perfect for you. :)

Well I can touch type fine (17+ years in the publishing industry taught me that) and I've owned a Filco which was non-backlit and now have a Razer Black Widow Ultimate.

Both keyboards are the same price roughly but I would choose the Razer any day. Gaming in the dark just makes it easier to find the keys for alignment for my fingers, it looks cool and also compliments my Razer Mamba mouse.

As a noob to mech keyboards, can someone just outline the basic pros and cons of the best ones available for under 90 quid?

I currently have a 25 quid microsoft/razer thing that's on its way out, but I do like the volume jog wheel on it.

I'm considering either the corsair k90, k60, or the black widow. I'm leaning towards the k90, but could I get away with something much cheaper? Mainly for fps gaming, but I'm learning programming so will be doing loads of typing too.

Hmm, well, the Filco I bought recently came with a key puller, the clear plastic keyboard cover and a PS/2 adapter. Also, as I bought the Ninja, it came with optional blank Windows keys.

I find it odd that people can want to spend £50-£150 on a mechanical keyboard, but not be able to touch type. BUT playing games is not the same as typing, if you need to find a key not around the WASD cluster, sometimes you may have to look.

Personally, I find keyboard back lighting and PC LEDs fairly pointless. I plan on getting a custom WASD keyboard and remove all letter keys to replace with blank ones.

Yea same. I don't understand how you can get any benefits from a mechanical if you can't touch type tbh.

Well, this is a gaming subforum, not a touch typing one... I'm sure lots of gamers who can't touch type have bought mechanical keyboards before (i've just become one of them).

but we're discussing Mechanical Keyboards and plenty of people who've come in here don't game. This thread is technically in the wrong section.

I'm not saying you can't buy a mechanical keyboard if you can't touch type. It just doesn't make much sense, what benefits do you get?
Apart from varying actuation forces.
