** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

I too am considering getting one, finding it hard to decide between Black and Brown keys, I've decided I want the Filco Majestouch 2 though. Also concerned that if I get one for home that I will need to get one for work as well. Currently in a job that involves a lot of typing, but there are only standard membrane keyboards at work.

I will probably end up ordering both to try them and sending one back. But then I might end up keeping the Blacks for home and the Browns for work.

Yeah, i'm starting to think the only way i'll decide is to order one of each (Black/Brown/Blue) and send back the ones I don't "get along" with.

I do know I don't want anything flashy mind, and I don't really want a keypad either as I never find myself using it. So I can start cutting that list down based on that (SS 7G, Razer Blackwidow, Meka G1 etc.).

I have an Qpad MK-80 and my brother has a Zowie Celeritas, I really like the Celeritas for gaming, but because of the amount of typing I do, I prefer the Mk-80.
The MX brown switches are very good, probably the closest to rubber dome keyboards like the G-19, so the transition should be very easy for you.

I think i'm going to sell my G19 as I don't use it's features and try a mechanical keyboard. I've had a think about it and based off recommendations in this thread i've made a shortlist:

- Types of mechanical keyboard keys:
- Cherry MX Black: Gaming
- Cherry MX Blue: Typing
- Cherry MX Brown/Clear: Both

- Some mechanical keyboard suggestions:
- WASD Keyboard (MX Black/Brown/Blue)
- Das Keyboard (MX Brown/Blue)
- Razer Blackwidow (MX Blue)
- Filco Majestouch (MX Black/Brown/Blue)
- Zowie Celeritas (MX Brown)
- Steelseries 7G (MX Black)
- Steelseries 6Gv2 (MX Black)
- Mionix Zibal (MX Black)
- Thermaltake Meka/Meka G1 (MX Black)

It's a shame there's nowhere you can really go to try out the different switches and see what you feel is best for you. I'm leaning towards the MX Browns/Clears as I guess overall I do a balance of typing and gaming.

I was also eyeing up the Topre Capacitive keyboard but if I spend £192 on a keyboard I think my girlfriend might disown me. :o

Not sure why my post about the Cherry G80 has gone unnoticed by everyone...

This may help you based on key sounds

Other than that black keys are not good for all types of gaming ie rts games and other games where you spam keys a lot your hands will get somewhat tired compared to blue/brown.

I do not regret for a moment going for Cherry Browns in my Filco.

Lovely action, feel and just enough TAKA TAKA to be satisfying. I type lots and game plenty and do not feel it is a compromise in either.

As he says, and they're far far superior to the cherry mx blues of the razer keyboard for typing and for gaming.

I'm going to have to buy a keyboard with brown switches and one with black switches, and test which works best for me overall. Bit of a mix between gaming and typing, but I do generally do long gaming sessions, so need something good for that. If a good game comes out, I can easily spend hours a day playing it. But I also need to be comfortable typing on it. A test will need to be done.

Blacks will suck for typing :(

My concern about browns is it might be too easy to press the wrong key for gaming, and double tapping keys might be difficult?

It's all down to personal preference.

In my usage however you have to be trying to tap a wrong key, the breakaway (activation point) has enough actuation resistance but not enough to inhibit the ability to double tap.

Ok after reading this thread I'm thinking of getting the razer black widow ultimate "stealth" edition as these have cherry browns. Anyone got one of these?

My g15 v1 has served me well but the keys have started to wear out and the lights on one half of it are blinking at me :(
The only thing I'll miss is the volume wheel, oh and the fact that it served me well for so long!

Didn't see your post DitsHavoc, make sure you post up some pics!
