After the pain i had the other day ive come to the decision that i suck at shaving :p

I hacked off skin from my lip when being careless that bled a steady stream for over an hour.
Then for the rest of the day my entire face felt like it was on fire and the shavers rash was in full bloom :o

This thread is to help people like me shave better and use better products and to avoid shavers rash.

Post all the knowledge you have gained from shaving in here.
Heres a few questions to get you started
Do you shave with or against the grain?
Do you use cold or hot water?
What shaving creams and gels do you use?
What shavers and razors do you use?
What do you use afterwards to help stop getting a rash?

Any information you can think of about shaving post in here :)

Get posting :)

hot water on your face (to open up your pores) or shave in the shower as the steam and hot water open up your pores. (best way in the shower)

I personally use gillette shaving foam and a mach 3 turbo razor.

Shave down your face as shaving up the way pulls the hairs out of the pores and thus looks like a rash appearing.

Also get a good moisturiser for putting on afterwards. spend a few quid on a decent one (king of shaves, nivia etc).

Don't use the razor with a sideways motion. That will only lead to pain.

Shave wet, with or against the grain isn't really a problem.

I shave with either my Mach3, or 'Gillette Blue II Slalom disposables' (I will be during training). I use normal Gillette shaving gel or foam.

My (probably n00bish) routine:
1)Fill up sink with warm water
2)Splash about my face the area to be shaved
3)Apply foam generously
4)Shave (mostly only downward strokes, upwards for some awkward areas)
5)Empty sink, rinse down mess, dispose of excess foam with flannel or water
6)Go out and fail to pull

Is it just me that applies the shaving gel then shaves with the grain then rinses face with water again re apply gel then start over again going against the grain?

Just going with the grain leaves me feeling rough and get an ear bashing, just going against the grain just leads to pain :o

Nivia Aftershave balm is a god send too.

Rinsing the razor with cold water is better in my opinion. Also keep the skin taught when shaving, provides a more even surface for the blade to travel across.

Don't be afraid to go against the grain either. Eventually your skin will toughen up and the rash effect will disappear.

Oh and most importantly keep a sharp razor.

1) Have shower preferably.
2) use hot water, as hot as you can stand and wet your face.
3) use a good shaving gel, King of Shaves is by far one of the best I have used, i used to get serious razor burn, not any more.
4) use a good blade, Gillete Mach 3 or above, and dispose as soon as the blade starts "tugging" and not cutting.
5) go with the grain, the razor burn is usually on the neck, try not to go against the grain unless you have stubborn hair or a funny neck. to rid yourself of the fluffy bits on the lips, go across the lips with your mouth closed. If you want a damn close shave, smooth as silk, go against the grain, but this will probably result in burn..
6) rinse off with COLD water, to close those pores up.
7) use a good moisturizer, again KoS is good stuff.
admire yourself in the mirror, wonder why you look ugly, then realise the "zoom" side of the mirror is being used :)
