****THE OFFICIAL OCUK SHAVING HINTS AND TIPS THREAD****

What's are the actual benefit of using aftershave? I've heard that the alcohol cleans out your pores (hence the bloody stinging) but I've also heard that it does little else but make you smell like a tart

...and the myth about being 'cleansing' was just used to sell what is basically perfume to men....

Alcohol also dries your skin out causing premature ageing of the skin :)

I have a 5 o'clock shadow after 5 mins with stubble i could use instead of an angle grinder....best combo for shaving i have found is:

Shaving oil (KoS formula alpha atm)
a mach 3 turbo...the vibrations are the key i feel
shaving against the grain for that first blade pulls the hair up so the 2nd can cut it off effect.

I CLAIM THIS N00B.

Jeeze are we still doing that? Oh well he's my next door neighbour so i had to.

I have had a stupid fluffy tash since 14. Now 18 and still have a stupid fluffy lip. I have been told I look like Garry Nevil?

Anyway gillette shaving foam and a mach 3.

Hot water. Foam. Shave. Rinse. Face scrub. Postshave moisturiser.

Go in shower
wet face with warm water
apply shaving foam
shave with a Mach 3 Turbo vibrating shaver, both directions!
dry off face with towel

i look **** but hey !

Be a man get it done at a decent barbers. On that note, i went and got a shave at a proper greek babers the other day, was amazing best shave i've had! Was quite fast aswell, was well impressed.

I just use a Electric Philishave ... 10 secs and done ... if for some reason i dont have a electric shaver then and razor .. i dont even need water or shaving Foam / cream/gel just away i go and done in say 30secs. I dont get a rash or anything be it a Decent Razor or them cheapo disposables ( orange ?)

I claim this noob

I tried the "against the grain" followed by "with the grain" earlier, instead of my usual with and against routine. I'll see how it feels tomorrow.

Long shave instructions

1. Fill sink with hot water, put facecloth in to warm up and then wrap around face parts to open up pores.
2. Put razor into the sink to warm up a little.
3. Remove facecloth, apply shaving foam of choice liberally.
4. Start shaving as normal, but leave any problem areas or areas with the stiffest stubble until last. This gives the shaving foam time to soften up the bristles a little - for me that's top lip.
5. Shave using downward strokes only. Going against the grain causes razor burn and ingrown hairs.
6. Rinse the razor after every stroke to ensure a snag free experience.
7. Rinse any foam off with the water left in the sink.
8. Finish off by splashing some cold water on to close the pores back up.
9. Apply aftershave balm and marvel at a pain free shave.

Quick shave instructions

1. Splash face with warm water.
2. Apply shaving foam.
3. Shave.
4. Wash off face with cold water.
5. Apply aftershave balm.

As for what products I'd recommend... Nivea Aftershave Balm is great for any mild razor burn and smells nice too. Nivea Sensitive Foam is very good as well (I promise I don't work for them) and my current razor of choice is a Mach 3 Power.

No real benefit, its just supposed to make you smell like a rampant man-stallion that can sweep women off their feet. But I just think they all stink, maybe its a hormonal thing so I should take a bunch of morning after pills, grow a pair of **** and get back to you.

I've converted to the single blade safety razor, and while it doesn't have bells, whistles or vibratey things it shaves as well and doesn't irritate my face nearly as much - takes a bit more time, but the result is worth it :)

Amen to that.
I'm no missing link or anything like that so I'm usually fairly indifferent to what I shave with (death to the Bic face snagger! being the only exception) but the 'old style' safety razor does just as good a job, if not a better one than any of these 50 bladed micro-pulsing (whatever  ) gimmics; it takes a bit more care and (lol) 'ceremony' as it were and if I was in a real hurry then I'd probably dust off my old mach3 thingy, but I wouldn't go back to cheap flashy multi-bladed gillette razors now. Just be sure to rinse the blade frequently whilst shaving and use a reasonable shaving gel/foam, though at a push ordinary soap will suffice- generally I use palmolive sensitive gel:

1) wet face, apply foam/gel and fill sink with water as hot as you can stand on your face.
2) shave using short downward stroakes making sure to keep blade angle consistant.
3) rinse off soap/foam with clean hot water.
4) repeat 1 - 4 if you're still a bit scratchy*

*this is probably an indicator that you're not doing it right the first time, either that or your blade needs changing.

1. Wash face with warm water
2. Trim to my usual length with wide trimmer end and guide
3. Use the narrow trimmer attachment without the guide to get a nice edge above the moustache and chin area
4. Use the mini shaver attachment to get rid of any remaining stubble from the chin area and above the moustache

5. Wash face and apply foam to cheek area and neck
6. Carefully shave with a mach3 to get a nice edge on the sides leading down to the chin
7. Shave area around the neck to get a nice clean edge.
8. Wash face with cold water and nivea for men face cream
9. Moisturise with nivea soft cream

same as what the sensible people have said :p

although i'd add that i don't shave every day as it irritates my skin no end. im extremely hairy and my stubble grows quickly but i can get away with not shaving for 3 days with the excuse i have really sensitive skin :D

how often do people change blades? I'm using a mach 3 and have a wet shave every other day or so (havent started work yet!) - but I can never properly judge when a blade is no longer sharp....

i tend to find that, guess its cause its allways slightly blunter every time you shave so its a gradul thing, but then when you go back to a new blade it always seems so much better to shave with :) Personally i tend to go with one a week or so, but i'm in no way constant cause i don't shave every day.... and thats not with a mach 3 either, just a safty razor....

I change 'em once the strip at the top loses its colour - pretty sure that's by design.
