The official Philips BDM4065UC thread

its not really the width at all that people like about 21:9, which is why the 29 inchers are so popular. It's about the aspect ratio itself. it just pulls you in to games and film in a way that 16:9 cant.

I know that.

I still think 21:9 is cool. But with the 40" 16:9 its physically wider than a 34" 21:9 screen ( which was my point above ) . So you can run 21:9 on that screen with a custom ratio and have a higher PPI a higher height, more width than the 34" LG 21:9's and being that most people game in low light and the VA panel is black rather than IPS your able to have a 21:9 and 16:9 on a screen that big without it looking weird i.e the black borders dont really matter unlike on an IPS with its weird edge glow.

you cant actually tell the difference between a 21:9 panel and a super large 16:9 running 21:9 here.. thats the sort of light i would normally game in anyways on a evening

outside of that even though 21:9 is super wide, 16:9 with a 90+ FOV or 100 is a fairly wide gaming experience in any case.

thanks

Must say, when I fired up Titanfall the other day, I was surprised just how well it played on this screen. It really was more than fast enough for me in every way for a game of that type.

And yeah, gaming on this in 21:9, certainly didn't feel inferior in any way to than gaming on an actual 21:9 screen. In fact, like you say phil, those blacks being so black, the complete lack of bleed, and not suffering glow, makes the top and bottom border negligible to me.

It seems strange to me that people can find playing games in a 21:9 window more immersive than using the full 16:9. I had the 21:9 LG for a few days and, for me, the vertical restriction felt so bad that I had to send it back. It was a relief to go back to my 30" 16:10 Dell.

I guess it's a psychological thing and we all react differently but I would never play stuff in a window on this Philips. Going from 30" 16:10 to 40" 16:9 has been a nice transition and I probably wont ever go for anything smaller.

A wider FOV can be good for certain games.

Am still waiting to try 3:1 ratio for assetto Corsa. That something like 3840*1280

Might make it a bit small though.

Finally done with work now until the new year, so looking forward to sitting down in front of this and getting on with DAI :)

Maybe will post some pics ;)

I know that.

Well you keep talking about physical width but its not the physical width that attracts people to 21:9. 21:9 is an aspect ratio, it has no link to physical width. I was just addressing that point.

Yes, the Philips is larger. No doubt there will probably be larger superwides as well.

And the rest of the time you have massive black bars to look at. And people thought 1.78:1 films on a 16:9 was bad....:p

We get the Phillips is larger and we get you like the VA black's ( i had a benq gw2760hs, great black's) but its not like the Philips is perfect is it? You have black, but you also have VA glow and VA response times. Its not a perfect display by any means.

I don't know why people find the bars so offensive.

I look at the image thats being presented, not the black bars above and below, which become invisible when you are into whatever it is you are displaying.

I always have it on 16:9 for desktop though.

Until proper 38/39 inch 21:9 screens are out, this will do just fine for me. Black bars or not :)

but then how freakin wide will they be

im not who the 'we' is here, are you hanging around with cloaked figures in the dark again or is that your alternate personalities talking.. :p

tbh ive not had a problem with VA response times with panels that have a properly managed overdrive circuit. Also as eyetrip said you don’t stare the black bands. VA glow  the reason I chose VA is because it doesn’t glow .. yes it has a viewing cone but ive never had glow on VA panels just a flat black background, unless your talking AHVA ?

as I said 21:9 is cool still, my main point is that both the width AND the aspect ratio are better/same on this screen but as D3lirious said you may aswell enjoy the full height of the screen, go with 16:9 and just increase the fov slider a bit in game.. more than enough aspect.

failing that buy two flanking 27" screens and have a 4k eyefinity PLP setup

All subjective and don't disagree as such with any of this but just to correct one thing. :)
People didn't mind 1.78:1 (think you mean 1.85:1 though surely?) on 16:9 screen. They DID mind 2.35:1 on a 16:9 screen. ;)
...Well the film buffs didn't mind of course, just like they wouldn't mind having giant black bars on this running 21:9...

Having said that, on this screen it really does approach the upper limits of horizontal width comfort for the eyes without having some kind of curve.

So it kinda is perfect in that regard at least :p

in a nutshell, is this good for gaming and worth replacing my 34" LG for?

In a nutshell.

Definitely, unless you play twitch shooters to a competitive standard. (That's just a guess, I don't and notice no lag over my old IPS dell panel Vs this)

Games look sublime, blacks are sublime, response time can't see a problem. Screen is super bright, does have some uniformity issues as would be expected due to being VA, corrected to a standard that is acceptable with the "smartuniformity" option in the OSD menu - at expense of colour gamut, however that tradeoff isn't awful and is acceptable...

Put it this way, I'd never go back to my old U3011 Dell which is a respected panel for colour accuracy, response times and general goodness...

Something like that, just buy it, stupid not to at this price.

sounds good to me, might need to add another 980 then to play at full specs :)

any good screenshots of it?

Well, i have been spending many hours in front of this the last few days, and can't say I feel any headaches or strain from using it for extended periods.

Ok, i have it at 100 brightness during day time, but that still several hours on 50 once gets dark. So, hopefully pwm not a problem for me.

Only playing dragon age inquisition currently, and usually at 3840x1635 as dual 970's can struggle a bit at 3840x2160.

Really do need to test out assetto Corsa in 3840x1280... Maybe when I'm out the bath.

Just want tomorrow to go by as it's the only day I got something getting in way of my gaming during my time off.

Wish bf4 was working. Would like the odd round of that to break things up a bit.

Yeah I would definitely agree, as I have Dell 3011 and 3014 and I could never go back to using them as a main gaming screen ( they are fine as an additional side monitor though )

Games are just so vivid with amazing blacks... Alien Isolation is excellent and I'm still making my way in Dragon age. Did pick up Lords of the Fallen and that also looks amazing on 4K.

Another thing which I quite like compared to the 34 widescreens one is that old games seem to find the 4k resolution and scales fine on them. For example i picked up Star Wars Empires at Wars and that finds my resolution fine. No need for any widescreen hacks etc.

Where I bought my Monitor from returns are amazingly easy and could have returned it no questions asked but this one is definitely a keeper.

4K is the present I will say. I look forward to playing all the 2015 games in 4k.

Connection question

Just bought 2 of those for a dual display setting.

For those that were wondering, works perfectly with a Mac PRO (late 2013) at full resolution 60Hz (after display port 1.2 is enabled in screen settings).

Hi ciobitud, did you use a mini DP to mini DP or a mini DP to DP? How many cables are required?

Pulled the trigger on one of these last week, any idea when the new stock will arrive gibbo?

Plus as has been asked before, has anyone hooked up a newer (xbone/ps4) console over hdmi to see how it scales and plays? Would be appreciated

Here's hoping they land next week......
