*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

PS4 is a cracking games console, but all but given up as a media player for me. Thankfully, the machine does a great job with its games, not too fussed about media.

Smart TV sorts this out for me. But whatever I tried, couldn't get netflix on PS4 to display 5.1 even if the stream states 5.1 in its description.

nice one fellas - will be changing that setup from DTS back to PCM when I get home!

Just having heard the difference DTS sound makes from crappy Dolby Digital I thought forcing it would always give the better quality! - Ta for clarifying - :)

tbh there isn't much in it

all 3 are lossless

PCM is uncompressed the other 2 are compressed.

I doubt you could notice the difference in a blind test which one was which but I stick to PCM anyway because I know it's the best.

? lossless and compressed makes no sense :)

PCM - PS3/PS4 Decodes
Bitstream - Amp Decodes

"DTS MA, Dolby True HD and Linear PCM are all lossless and should sound the same. Linear PCM is raw audio and is not compressed. DTS MA and Dolby TrueHD are compressed but lossless non the less.
There is not one easy choice because it is also dependent on what you are watching and playing. Not all Blu-ray will have every type of audio source. So they will dictate what type of audio to use. And the receiver will pick it up and set it's self properly.

Will the decompression from DTS or Dolby affect the audio in any way? Maybe the (virtual) position of sound sources in the room?
Thanks for the answer.

Not at all. They will sound completely identical to the Linear PCM stream once uncompressed. Linear PCM is the best option in my opinion. It is completely raw audio.

Linear PCM is generally only 2-channel stereo, though. Use Bitstream, which just passes the signal as-is.

This is the case with toslink/spdif, but not hdmi. 8 uncompressed channels are possible.

True but hardly anything uses it because its just to much wasted data space. Considering DTS MA and Dolby TrueHD sound the same and use about a two thirds the space. Don't quote me on this, but I also don't think HDMI v1.0 or v1.1 can send full channel Linear PCM."

Hmmm Playstation Now will hit us Q1 next year :p. Love to understand who this feature is aimed at...

Personally Ive got a massive PS3 backlog which Im expecting to get mostly dealt with this year while next gen finds it feet. Beyond that PS Now just seems a non-feature to me, just like BC becomes after the first couple of years of a new console gen...

If I didnt have that PS3 then maybe Id feel different?!?

I actually have a question about the PS4 sound a swell, I noticed the other day when watching a Blu-ray that on my amp it had 7.1 on the screen (I only have 5.1), when my PS3 was connected it always was 5.1. Is this correct ie PS4 is able to send out the extra 2 channels where as PS3 can't?

Infamous Second Son, The Division and Watch Dogs are my main three.

Dying Light and The Evil Within are the other two and possibly my annual FIFA.

The division I'm looking forward to but isn't that something that's going to be released late in the year?

Planet side 2 also appeals to me. Im more of an online player than single player games.

On a separate note how does ps plus work with games? Do you only get ps4 titles or do you get ps3 games too? Thinking of getting it as £30 for a year doesn't sound bad.

Bf4 is the only ps4 title that interests me at the moment. Really enjoying on ps3 so 64 players should be a blast.

Does the ps3 blu tooth headset work on ps4? I assume it does as it's just blu tooth.

I was wondering this too, mine says 7.1 but I only have 5.1. On the Xbone I can change it from 7.1 to 5.1 but can't see the feature on PS4.

Anyone picking up Tomb Raider Definitive Edition?

once it gets around the £25 mark, i have never played it and heard a few good things so ill pick it up eventually i have too many other games to play through first but BF4 multiplayer is taking up most of my time.

You're spot on there mate. It's a total non-feature for me too, despite never owning a PS2/3. I'm not interested in old games, I barely have time to play the new ones!

How many people are still playing original xbox games on their 360s nowadays?

A pointless feature for me too, i have average internet speed which i bet wont be enough so im just going to keep my ps3. I imagine they will charge for the service anyway (either monthyly or per game) and i assume the video quality will suffer, so to me if you really want to play old games pick up a cheap ps3 and grab the games you want on ebay :D
