*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

Anyone's PS4 randomly spat a disc out?

I came in last night to find my fifa disc on the floor.

I think it's probably trying to tell you something like 'Get this disgusting re-hash of a tired and boring franchise out of my ****ing drive'. :)

Or there's something wrong with it. Your PS4's been doing weird things for a while, hasn't it?

The next gen version isn't a re-hash at all, completely new engine plays very differently to 14 on the old gen.

Yeah I fixed the other problem then this happens, can see me having to send it off soon but I'm holding off for as long as possible.

Any of you guys got Thief on pre-order for PS4? I blindly pre-ordered it a while back on Amazon with a load more games, but thinking of cancelling it now as:
1. It doesn't really look like anything new gameplay wise, and very similar to Dishonored (I realise that until the reviews comes out we won't really know)

2. I can get it >£20 cheaper on PC..

Why are games so much more expensive on consoles?

Is it all the middle man costs?

Basically do console developers need to pay a fee for every game sold to Sony or MS? Even then surely this fee isn't as large as £10-£20 per game now is it?

Or is there another reason or is it they simply do it because they can?

Pretty much middle man costs, plus the marketplace is more competitive, and PC games are primarily sold through digital means which cuts shipping, manufacturing and retailer costs. Publishers normally earn more money, while selling for less, per unit on PC.

I suppose paying £10 - £20 more per game is okay compared to having to shell out £100's on new graphics cards and constant upgrades.

£350 and your sorted for 5+ years in comparison you could spend that much just on a graphics card no bother every 2-3 years.

The constant upgrade thing has always been a myth; it only applies to people who have more money than sense or try to save money with small incremental upgrades instead of spending a little more at the start.

This machine's an E8400 with a 5870, and Rage is the only game I had a few issues with in recent times. Otherwise it just runs anything@1080p apart from the kind of CPU-intensive simulations consoles just can't run, and even the 5870 is overkill for many titles. I had a 260GTX in there until quite recently, and neither card was bought until they were heading for the bargain basement.

One reason I took a long time to buy a PS3 (my first ever console) was the stupid price of games, and although I made an exception for Last of Us, which paid off, I'll probably never buy a full price title again; at least partly because I'm patient and partly because PS+ is great value for money.

However I think those who've grown up with consoles have been 'conditioned' into accepting high prices, and the model has stuck. The rise of cheap or "free to play" games on IOS, and the proven value of Steam sale pricing in extending product life and margin on PC, tells us where the real money is to be made in the future. I don't see the current pricing models for console or software working for much longer.

I am still of the belief that console games are relatively cheap as far as a piece of entertainment goes. Given how much time and effort goes in to making a game, and we are still paying prices equivalent, if not less, than 10+ years ago!

Also compare how much value you get out of a blu-ray movie when compared to a console game. I don't think we can moan too much at £40 - £50 a throw. Then there is the 2nd hand market if you don't mind waiting for your games.

Agree'd, espically multiplayer games like fifa, cod etc.

I've got an issue in Fifa 14 where it some times skips sound. I thought this was a problem with my connection as it was happening when I was playing online but it's also happening offline.

I've done a Google and it seems other people are affected aswell.

I'm connected by optical to a DAC converter and then into my PC.

Ttry swapping to HDMI in the audio settings and back to optical again - should clear it up - is this a random problem or happens all the time?

Ive had audio skip a few times but that quick flick always sorts it...

It's a random problem, certainly doesn't happen all the time but it is occasional.

Safe to assume it's a software issue rather than hardware?

EDIT - I think it's the optical cable that I got online. I just lost all sound on my PS4 and it was crackling, looked at my DAC, wobbled the optical cable and it came back on. Going to order a better optical cable.

Yeah that sounds wierd, I had stuttering sound rather than crackling - got any other equipment to test the cable on? Ive only had it like 3 times since Ive had the PS4 though - come to think of it its only happened when I play FIFA which I dont much now...

I was having sound stuttering as well and that was the first time I had the cracking and when I wobbled it it went away so I'm thinking it's all cable related.

Just pre-ordered Thief from The Game Collection £33.95 plus +10% back via quidco and double points on The Game Collection this weekend. Sounds a bargain to me and im desperate for a new game, looks pretty good and great price. Only 10 hours to grab it, and it sold out once already.

Had 3 crashes on ps4 this morning all whilst playing lego, weren't total lock ups though e.g could hear sound no pic or Thor got stuck in wall and then wouldn't load yet isn't a mark on the disc so can assume just I hit allot of game bugs, any one else had em?
