I still can't get in on the PS4. Can sign in on PC to the PSN, but not on the PS4. I just get:

The connection to the server has been terminated (NW-31194-8)

Got a message saying was down for maintenance but it then logged me in and I could access the store.

And the other problem; Sony's lack of actual communication with its customers. Apart from a Twitter account spewing "We're aware there are issues" etc, it would nice to know when the attacks stopped and when it was actually brought down for maintenance.

Totally agree with that. They should try letting people know what's going on. At least MS let you know, their support on social media is excellent. Sony's is rubbish.

It's like that normally. When friends/party features go down, we normally just get a random error code, that upon googling them and finding a random forum post about it, turns out to just be more maitenance
