This is getting silly now.

People are just jumping on the bandwagon and pointing out problems for the hell of it, and most of the problems people are finding are down to their own lack of intelligence.

The operation/post-operation scene(s) ruined it for me. One of those things that throughout I could at least be "ok, I can work with this", but then something like that comes along and just tips it over the edge of realism, even in a scifi.

There is no way she would have not passed out during the operation and there's no way she'd be able to walk let alone run/suit up/carry things afterwards. No amount of technologically advanced anaesthetic or drug can get over the fact that her stomach muscles aren't physically connected.

You best have words with anyone who's had a c section, my first wife was walking herself around the ward after 24 hours.
Artistic license and super duper future space drugs.

If thats the outcome of a sex change we better all start warming to the idea of loving she males!!

:D:D:D

I've calmed down since seeing this on opening night and things have made more sense whilst sinking in.

Still annoying with teh terrible character development, random guys, and some silly writing, but better than my initial thoughs. Almost tempted to see it again.

No, most of us are genuinely upset/annoyed/angry it turned out the way it did.

and most of the problems people are finding are down to their own lack of intelligence.

Not really constructive, but I could just as easily turn round and say the only people who like it are those with really low standards.

Just got back from seeing this. Well, quite enjoyable, beautifully filmed, 3D was nice and subtle, and tbh, I enjoyed it more for the visual feast than the story. Nothing particularly unique about the story imo. I liked the intriguing discoveries at the start of the movie of ancient civilisations all pointing at the same planets/stars, but it wasn't clear to me how these ancient people knew of those stars/planets. Gotta laugh though as elizabeth shaw was able to self operate, cut her guts wide open, have an alien the size of a medicine ball pulled out of her, be metal stapled together again and immediately walk away like she'd had nothing more than a mild stomach ache. :D

There were some pretty good action scenes. Not many, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Charlize made the 3D worthwhile alone, but the star map scene was also spectacular as well.
Best scene in the whole film for me, this just blew me away. Plus it had David in the centre of it - easily the best character out of all of them.

On the whole I can't agree with all this negative criticism - I thought it was very good.

What I gathered from the beginning is that the "Engineer" sacrifice was an honour - it could be the greatest honour to give his essence to seed life on a planet (petri dish).

The black stuff was very reminiscent of the black fluid in District 9, but in this case I gathered that it destroys DNA and allows for it (life) to be reconstituted in a new form. So what it seemed the purpose that the surviving Engineer tried to complete was to "reformat the hard drive" so to speak - life on Earth had not gone in a direction they agreed with, so they decided to wipe the slate clean and start again.

Anyway aside from all this the main soundtrack/music theme was amazing - reminds me of the Entr'acte from Bizet's Carmen. Really well done.

I thought Shaw's character went downhill in the second half - after losing her partner and the surgery, she seemed unnaturaly amicable. I would have expected her to go a bit psycho - she didn't show half as much emotion over the events as I would have expected. That and half the crew dying off in the space of 10-20 minutes near the end was a bit weird.

Sure it's not in the same style as Alien, even if it is billed as a "prequel". But even with all the holes and relatively weak characters, I thought it was a very good film overall.

Question though which no one seems to have picked up on...

The machine is set up for male patients only... yet Vickers says she brought along the capsule for herself to keep her well in case the worst happens (she confirms that when she meets the scientists in her quarters) so unless she is a chick with a **** why the heck is machine set up to heal men?

Another stupid plot hole for you right there :p

Weyland.

I thought the film was pretty good, David stole the show Fassbender was epic.
People keep going on about why the engineer went mental, wouldn't the better question be: What did David say? The engineer was calm until David spoke to him ;)

I thought Weyland was Johnny Depp at first, kinda looked it might be him under that makeup, but it obviously wasn't him. Also, why on earth didn't they hire an old actor for that part. It was stupidly obvious that this was a younger actor with excessive makeup to make him look unconvincingly old. Like something you'd expect in a low budget B movie.

Were we meant to care about Weyland and Vickers? Why did they have the shock moments (Weyland being there all along and Vickers being the daughter) when I don't think we even had much a chance to care.. It came out as a "Oh right, hes alive, of course" moment, not what it felt likeit should have been, an actual shock. Same with the I am your father part, I Didn't feel like that had any relevance and did not care, therefore it came off as cheesy and silly..
Did I miss something?

no one has mentioned this yet, I suppose it may be minor but its one of the things I remember thinking about while actually watching the movie..
When they all remove their helmets, where do they put them? Surely in this alien environment you don't know, that could be huge and you only have a few hours to check out would you be excited over air so much you'd rather hold a giant helmet the whole time?

Although I did not see them holding them so am I meant to believe they just left them on the floor where they took them off? This seems silly being where they were.. What if they needed to get out quickly, took another route not passing their stored helmets.. Or the storm came at the wrong time, or something that caused the helmets to fall into that hole they were next to? Just seems really odd you'd go venturing into such an alien place leaving your helmet somewhere else, not knowing if you'd come back that way or if you'd need them again.

I know my way around the local woods but I wouldn't leave my phone on the floor to collect later even if I knew i'd be coming back and it's not like my phone can be my life support.

I may have missed something though.

I thought this too, and came up with the answer that Guy Pearce had done that 'viral' TED conference video where he played a younger version of Weyland and 'therefore' had to also be in the film under layers of old-man makeup. I don't like that answer because it compromises the movie for the sake of internet marketing just a little.

Watched again last night. There are some things pointed out in this thread that are explainable. There are some things that are a bit silly and a bit ropey for someone of Scotts calibre.

A solid 7.5/10 for me.

People are just jumping on the bandwagon and pointing out problems for the hell of it, and most of the problems people are finding are down to their own lack of intelligence.

EDIT: Forget it. If people can't tell the difference between a plot hole and deliberate mystery then I'm certainly not going to go around questioning their own cinematic intelligence. Saying everyone who found problems with the film lacks intelligence is just ludicrous.

I didn't say that, please read my post again.

I have a few problems with the film myself, but the things that some people are pointing out are ridiculous.

Well, you said most of. Might not be everyone like I said (I apologise) but it's still a crazy thing to say.

Majority of the issues can be cleared up by artistic licensing and hopefully the rest will be cleared up by a sequel.

A week after viewing and my judgement is still the same.. I loved this film and the whole mythology surrounding it.

I can appreciate some of the things people are pointing out tho.. I can just ignore them tho lol

The way the film goes from one scene to another and characters seem to have knowledge of events they havent witnessed, almost makes me think there are lots of things cut out to fit time constraints or to try give it a certain flow.

Problem is, there is no flow and some character development is diabolical, coming from someone like Scott who can make a purely character driven piece like Matchstick Men, this just doesnt make any sense at all.

I'm praying there are many scenes left out and we will get to see it all as it was intended at some point, because right now it's a mess and hard to see how Scott thought it was acceptable.

The original cut was 2:27mins. The cut that FOX released to theatres was 1:59mins. It is in fact so cut to pieces (by FOX) that in one scene a character that died just minutes before is miraculously alive again!

There is definitely going to be an extended cut, maybe a directors cut. Though Ridley is at the moment sticking to his guns by saying the theatrical cut IS his directors cut. But he's said that in the past with Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven. All of which were vastly better in the director's cut. He's just trying to keep FOX happy and get people into theatres to see it.

Fans were so wound up about FOX cutting the film for rating purposes that they took their eye off the ball for the real overriding reason that FOX would be cutting it. Runtime! A two hour runtime means they can fit more bums on seats in theatres per day, more tickets sold... etc.

Do you have a source for this?

Also, even if this film was extended to three hours with more footage I still don't think it would save this film. It's terribly written. If anything, by making it longer it'll only serve to highlight that even more.

EDIT: Two hour runtime doesn't mean you'll get a bigger audience. The biggest film released this year was 2 and a half hours long.
