**** The Official Prometheus Spoiler Discussion Thread ****

One planet is lv426 (tells us the name in aliens) and promethus planet is lv223

The space craft also has different damage and its not the same alien.

Promethus is not a prequal.
It's not even set in the true alien universe.
Forget the word to describe it, but its based on the alien universe with some changes.

The word your looking for to describe it rhymes with pit, and starts with an S and end in a T, with an I and a H in there too.

i think the not a prequal thing may have been misinterprited, its not a direct prequel, but it is in the same universe, and as ridley has said in interviews, and in the commentary on the bluray, if they are able to make the next two films, it should join up to alien by the end of them.

they also talk about the reason for the differences in the space jockey to the original film on the bluray, and as i said its because when using the original proportions etc it didnt work and looked ridiculous, you have to remember when the made the original space jockey, it getting up and moving around was never a concern, so it makes complete sense that it would need changed in order to make it work.

The main thing is the original engineer was absolutely gigantic. They got over part of that by turning his exoskeleton into a spacesuit but really, 'engineers' are way off the original design by Geiger. His way off imagination is part of what made the original so that is part of why its not quite as good but it wasnt workable in their opinion

Apparently they would have been about 20 feet in height if they had stuck to the suit size from Alien. As you say though its very noticable the engineer and the suit have been scaled back considerably to say the least, not really sure why they felt the need to reduce the size by more than half.

I didnt mind them changing the size of the engineers, my main issues were the utter idiocy demonstrated bya trillion dollar mission crew and chums.
The insanity shown, poor judgement, lack of good aliens, the evolutionary track they pretended to use as a link and frankly failed badly.
Even the engineer speaking incident, leaving off the subtitles as they couldnt make a decision to commit to their own script.
Poor very very poor.

IT IS the same universe, this has been confirmed over and over. The Weyland logo is different because they haven't merged with Yutani yet.

In retrospect I should never have got my hopes up so high about this movie, however in a world of movies where i'm starving for sci-fi, i'll take this movie over no movie.

I've watched it 4 times now, twice at cinema and twice on blu ray, I find I like it more each time and notice extra nuances that weren't so apparent to begin with.

Watched this again on the blu ray edition a month or so back and have to say second time round watching it, i enjoyed it much more than when i watched it at the cinema.

Watched it in 3D and thought it wasnt too bad.

Pretty much sums it up for the Alien fans.

Instead we got a Studio Executive's vision of making piles of money from the mass audience, whilst Ridley Scott is so senile, not noticing that as he went down to tie his shoe laces, the studio was giving him one from behind, without even offering a reach around.

This is the process where our chance at a true Alien-prequel, i.e Jon Spaihts original screenplay, went flying out the window quicker than a cat kicked by Superman.

one of spaihts original scripts is out there to read and all the good bits are in the film and most of the rubbish bits were taken out by ridley and lindelhof. I dare say listening to the commentary would make people realise spaights was in danger of ruining a lot of this film, he had some wierd idea's, spaights is also responsible for almost everything people are gurning about, fifeild/millburn getting lost etc. I mean if all people wanted was a rehash of all the previous films mixed together along with bits nicked from predator then spaights would have delivered that but i suspect this discussion would be more along the lines of why didnt they do anything original, he was taken off the project for good reason, things like the mapping balls bounced around the place like rubber balls, and the engineers had predator vision, it would have been junk, and instead of the fascinating character we got in david, he was a phsycho who made no sense. Ultimatly you cant please everyone though.

The place this film really suffered was in the editing room, theres scenes such as the one where they find the first small lifeform, which helps with the snake scene later, lindelhof wanted that left in. The editor was determined to cut the film down to a certain length and they were pretty relentless about it. Its all clear if you watch the documentary on the blu ray and listen to the commentary.

Thanks von, i was thinking the same myself, if it is truely terrible, then best i have it explained

Until now it is turkey 2012, and so it remains
No amount of explaining will excuse this

I'll be sure to buy the Blu Ray of a terrible film to watch the commentary explaining why it's terrible.

After seeing this at the cinema, I bought the 3d+2d Blu-ray (even though I don't have 3d) just to get the 3hr documentary in the hope that it'd explain wtf went wrong with this film.

After watching that, I got the impression that Ridley F'd it up by constantly meddling with all the decent ideas and no-one could could say no to him.
Just my take... I''ll have to check out the original script as well as the commentary if I can sit through it again.

Just watched it again on Blu-Ray. Still can't decide if I like it or hate it :p It's very simple really......there are some awesome bits and some mind-bogglingly stupid bits. Don't think I've seen a film that gave me such mixed feelings in my entire 38 years!

Agree, i want to like it. But some things are so jarringly bad, it tears me up inside.

I've just watched Alien... Prometheus is the same film, but with atrocious pacing and idiotic characters. So it's redundant, and bad.

not suggesting anyone should buy it for that alone lol if they didnt like the film, however its just funny that many people seem to think they know an awful lot about who is responsible for which bits they didnt like, how they came to these conclusions i dont know it seems really quite random as having listened to the commentary and seen the documentary the blame seems to have been thrown about entirly at random, usually aimed at lindelhof because some people just dont like him, what he is actually responsible for seems entirely irrelevant its his fault anyway.

As an example Hikaru Kisugi below saying they left the subtitles off the engineer because they couldnt commit to their own script, is just made up nonsense, they decided the subtitles removed some of the mystery from the engineers when they watched it so decided to leave them out, personally a decision i agree with. If people are going to invest time bashing the film and attributing reasons at random, then all i'm saying is it might be worth getting some perspective on it.

Personally I like the film but recognise its flawed, with some things to dislike, but there is a lot to like in it aswell.

Watched this yesterday on Blu-ray and thought it was amazing!

So did the girl make it home on one of the space ships? I assume she did as it finishes with one of the ships flying away. Either way it was awesome.
