The official Ps3 thread

Has Sony gone mad? Prominent adult movie producer Digital Playground (site) says it is forced to use HD DVD instead of Blu-ray, because Sony does not allow XXX-rated movies to be released on Blu-ray.

It does not matter how you stand to porn. It is here and it is a massive business. It is also an industry that is an early adopter for new media technology. VHS might not have won with out the adult film industry adopting it.

German Heise has interviewed Joone the founder of Digital Playgrounds at the AVN 2007 show in Las Vegas. Joone says actually said last year he is committed to Blu-ray. Now they announced four HD DVD titles in the United States. In the interview Joone says he was forced to use HD DVD, because no Blu-ray disc manufacturer would make his discs, because Sony was against it and they would loose their license.

If this holds true, Blu-ray is at a major disadvantage and could fail.
:(

Yep quite a few reports about this one... a HUGE mistake by Sony if it is true since it is rumoured that in America the Porn industry is bigger than the sports industry (in the form of attending events) and even the music industry.

That's a huge $10 billion a year (JUST IN AMERICA) which BR is missing out on.

It would make sense for Sony to manufacter standard units and then just lock features as needed for different regions etc, so I would imagine so. I would be more costly for Sony to produce different models for different regions.

Yeah i done a backup of my PS3 last night before i installed Yellow Dog on it.
JUMPURS,

Is there a media player you can download for Yellow Dog and if so can you get a DiVX codec?

Also, can you give me a link to the free version you got as I can't find it?

I have no idea tbh i haven't played with Yellow dog much.

As for the porn thing, is it really as big a deal as it was during the BetaMax/VHS days?
I mean who here has porn, and how many people went and bought it on dvd? I'd be willing to wager at least 99% is downloaded off the internet.
But 15 years ago ask that and someone will have had a mucky vid stashed away somewhere.
I am not saying the porn industry isn't big, but i think the physical medium, especially where porn is concerned, isn't much of an issue. I mean most of the porn stars have their own web sites that you can buy it from and download it there and then.

Not to worry about the linux stuff, I will look into it. I'm just trying to find a solution to not having too many bleedin devices under the tele. If I can play multi region DVD's and maybe DiVX files via Yellow Dog then it would be fantastic as it would mean I could ditch my DVD player and I wouldn't have to buy the HDD media player I have been considering... I have too many damn remotes!

I have to say I agree totally about the porn thing, I mean it's not like you see Jenna Jamesons latest in WHSmiths is it?

On a completely different not, I can't beleive the amount of fuss which was caused by 360 fanboys about the obviousley pre-rendered Motorstorm & Killzone 2 vids a while back when I have just watched a TV advert for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, which was quite clearly absolutely no reflection on what the game would look like in reality...!!!   I popped this comment here instead of making it a new thread so as to not start a whole fanboy flamewar thing - just venting soem thoughts is all ;)

Since when was this forum, or what's in UK shops indicative of the wider world?

US$4.28-billion is predicted from sales and rentals of porn DVD’s, even though the price of a porn film has dropped 20% in the last year—to less than US$50.

I'd call $4 billion an issue!

I don't remember any fuss from 360 fanboys about the Motorstorm and Killzone 2 vids. Not to mention they were shown before the 360 even came out. They looked lovely and were quite obviously pre-rendered, but this is used by almost all companies to showcase their game. The problem is people fall for them and think they are in-game graphics. I think there should be a ban on pre-rendered videos in adverts because it's essentially false advertising.

I totally agree. Most intelligent people would know that these ads are pre-rendered but there are a lot of gullable people out there who will truly beleive that it's what the game will look like.

I wonder how they get around trading standards with something like this, I mean if there is a cutscene contained within the game which is in the advert is that some sort of loophole?

I was talking about the general chat around the internet and in real life rather than a reflection of what was said on these forums regarding the fanboys.

i should imagine if the cutscene is not actual realtime FMV and is instead actually using the game engine to produce the cutscene then thats classed as ingame. Not to worry, i'm sure Sony will follow suit when its Tv advertisements launch in the UK.

Our records indicate that you downloaded Gran Turismo HD Concept from
the PLAYSTATION(R)Store. Version 1.1 is now available for download,
which refines the gameplay experience in Time Trial mode and the accuracy
of lap times within the online rankings. Since online ranking results
recorded by version 1.1 players will be given priority, it is highly recommended
that you download and install it if you are playing the earlier version.
Please note that version 1.1 is compatible with existing game save data,
allowing you to race your previously unlocked cars.

We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and hope you enjoy
Gran Turismo HD Concept.

Sincerely,
The PlayStation Underground

Did you not notice the online times on the leaderboard? They were just ridiculous, like 40seconds or something... I watched a few of the replays though and the laps always cutoff under the tunnel about 3/4 of the way around so it was obviousley an error which needed fixing.

This could be good news and bad news for the future, as it means that just like the PC we will be able to download patches to fix problems with games, but the flipside of this is that developers coudl start releasign unfinished games and patch them later as sometimes happens on the PC.!!!!
