***The Official Q6600 Overclocking Thread ***

Sry but i think your temps are bit high for almost stock speed. I would check the cooler again and reapply thermal compound (buy MX-2 MX-3) lapping would help aswell

There’s really no point doing that until temps actually become an issue, its got a lot more to do with the coolers capacity to cope with higher thermal loads. Temps might not actully increase significantly when overclocked further.
I would check case airflow is up to par before doing something as drastic as lapping a processor

Sorry to ask such a simple question in a advanced thread but where do i start with this overclocking business?
Like what programs do i need, what do i need to do in the BIOS.

Ive got a Q6600 at 2.4 stock.

I have only got a 480wPSU
Cheapo

I also have a non standard cooler, not sure if that makes overclocking less effective or more restristive than the standard cooler
Freezer7

Motherboard is PN5-E SLI.

Hi Pespro, kentfiled quads even the q6600 g0's get incredibly power hungry when overclocked! A q6600 running a modest 3.6ghz overclock at 1.35v will draw just shy of 170 watt of power alone!

You will a need decent psu rated at a minimum of 450watts. The single 12v 20 amp rail on that cheapo psu just aint going to cut the mustard!

also your P5N-E board has a very weak 3 phase power design, which really isnt quad friendly.

Thanks for all the advice guys - just to address a couple of points though:

My RAM, although it physically says 1066 on the sticks themselves, the default speed in the BIOS seems to be 800!?!?
Here are the Memory and SPD tabs on CPU-Z to help explain:

Regards to the CPU - its actually already lapped, although not by me - I bought it off the MM!

Thanks for all the continued help guys...

I think its because pc2-6400 is the highest official standard which is why its not showing the expected spd rating.

google OCZ2G10662G and it shows up as the correct pc2-8500 ram, so its a case of either putting the right setting in the BIOS or your board doesnt fully support it.

1066mhz could be termed as "overclocked speed" by gigabyte?

I cant imagine that my motherboard doesnt support 1066 - the Gigabyte website says it does and it does on the box!

From memory, there isnt a setting in the bios that makes it run at exactly 1066 - so I have to either slightly underclock it or slightly overclock it!

Will this have a massive effect on my CPU overclock??

Its unlikely you will have a divider that exactly suits ddr1066, this has no effect on you cpu overclock though.

As I said before your ram modules have a programmed SPD of ddr800 max, but they will of course run 1066 as ocz specify. you just have to make sure the latencies are manually set and the vdimm is set to 2.1~ to allow them to run at a thier specified bandwidth.

If gigabyte specify ddr1066 compatibility then its fine, but you will only be able to run that speed when the dimms are manfully configured

Regards the RAM, I've had a look at the list of compatible memory on the Gigabyte website and there are only a few OCZ modules listed (mines not one of them!) but it does say the list isnt exhaustive!

Thanks for all the advice - I'll try the gradual overclock and see what happens!

So I'm essentially looking for 65 degrees plus as too high a temp under load?? (is Orthos OK for this? It only seemed to stress the first 2 cores to 100%!?!?)

Thanks again.....

Just turned PC on for first time after putting in Q6600 G0. Voltage in CPU-Z says 1.176v @ 2405Mhz. My VID apparently was 1.215, is this normal, or is my VID better than expected?

Update: After a little fiddling:- 3.6 @ 1.35 in bios, 1.3V inside windows 400 * 9. Not bad :-)

CPU temp at idle sitting at 25 - 27 C :-) Not too bad. (Cooler Master Hyper 212 with two fans (not the 'plus' version).

Just ran Furmark for about a minute, CPU temp didn't go above 35C. Assuming this is because it's a GPU bench not a CPU bench.

Update: Crashed when trying to load BFBC2. Checked volts in BIOS and 1.35 = 1.288v, so upped to 1.4v and it's now showing 1.33v-1.35v in bios/windows. Plays BFBC2 just fine although northbridge reached 60C eek. (Is that bad?) Running 1.36v on northbridge so may reduce that a little tomorrow.

Overall very impressed so far, although the crash in BC2 cost me my password lol. Will have to try and remember that one d'oh. 3.6Ghz at 1.33/35 volts on a board with 4 x1gb memory I thought is pretty good. Will push for more later, but want to get the northbridge temp sorted :-)

Think my northbridge temps may be a little high as they reached 60 degrees. Hmm.. may have to look into that, and see if the heatsinks need repasting (must be careful as Asus use glue apparently d'oh).

Do you think a BIOS update (if available) would help with this??

Might upgrade my Graphics card or get an SSD instead then before getting new pc end of year or next year.

Its unlikely it will make a difference mate, your mb is correctly configuring the ram. Its just that like many other high bandwidth ddr2 modules the vdimm, latencies and frequency must be manually set to the suppliers specified settings.
I dont know why ram manufactures dont just change the spd settings so the mb sets it correct to start with, then they wouldnt have to dedicate entire faq's on thier website to help people figure it out

With regards to Orthos only loading 2 cores on you system, it would seem your version or maybe all are not compatible with quads. must admit I’ve only ever really used prime95, version 26.4 works good i find :)

Cheers, I'll give prime95 a go! :)

I would advise against it mate, you’re playing with fire if you overclock a quad on that psu!

I’ve uses a p5n-e board before, great board for conroe c2d overclocking, absolutely hopeless for overclocking kentfield c2q's.

tbh I would save up for a quality psu before you go out a by a new gfx card and ss drive.

I was going to try get that GTX280 deal and a PSU for around £250, but i want to use both next year when i get a new PC.

So i think id need a 700W at least? Is that correct and what makes are good?
All models listed on this website?

hope that works.

running at 3.2ghz cant really get much higher as im using a DDR2 board at it goes unstable past this.
Ive been running this clock for over 2 years now and its not failed since. *touch wood*
