Hi guys, i need yor help, i would like push my q6600 as much as i can on air for now. Currently running 3.4 Ghz at 1.3V and vid is 1.2875V but even with this settings is not 100% stable it fails IBT at extreme settings in second linpack and temp was 62 C max at that test otherwise 28 - 30 idle with
IFX-14 and two gentle typhoons. Please have look at my bios and give me advice. Thank you

Will it stabilise with more vcore? or do temps then become a problem?

A P5Q DLX will require little or no tweaking to push a q6600 to its limit.

Getting a high stable clock on a high vid q6600 will always require more vcore and therefore better cooling
 
try small prime first - if that fails - more than likely CPU - not enough Vcore

if thats stable, and Prime Blend fails - then probably one of the
mobo volts or memory unstable

as a guide I need about 1.46V Vcore on my 1.325Vid Q for 3.4 to be stable :(
 
OK so set vcore to 1.43125v in bios Cpuz shows 1.424 FOR 3.6Ghz at 8x450 FSB termination 1.32v and Ram 2.10v. Prime was ok small tft and blend for 1hour but IBT was telling me its unstable after 5 lynpacks and temps reached 73C. Can i run syste, at 3.6 anyway?

The stress testers will stress the system way beyond what your usual usage (inclusive of gaming) will be!

My Q6600, when I had it, would run 24/7 stable at 3.2 but was unstable according to stress tests. At 3.4 or above it would crash in games no matter what I tried so in the end I upgraded to a Q9550 and sold the Q6600.
 
Why did you not attempt to get 3.4ghz stable first before you ramped the clock up to 3.6?

Due to the VID of your q6600 its probably going to require a fair bit of voltage to get it 100% stable at your current clock, by the looks of it your cooling isnt going to be up to it.

I wouldnt push it any higher than 1.4~ volts on air if your hitting those temps, it looks like you will be able to get it stable at 3.5 though.
 
Try boosting the nb voltage a bit, also pll seems a bit low, but as stated, your gonna need better cooling as your temps are a bit high, 1.2875 vid isnt too bad, iirc my own 1.2750 vid chip needed 1.400 vcore at 3.6ghz, just over 1.500 at 3.8ghz.
 
fOUND out what was wrong :) My cooler was not seated properly and i lapped my Q6600 today aswell and now all stable IBT max stress 67C. Primeing at the moment so try push it to 3.8 Ghz later today. Fingers crossed
 
It's good to see these still going. I must've had mine for over 3 years now, it's still solid as ever at 3.6Ghz. I don't see any reason to upgrade at all for what I use the PC for now.
 
Hi guys,

I'm a bit of a beginner at overclocking and I've got a G0 revision Q6600 sat in my rig at the minute with a modest overclock at 2.7GHz and I'm looking to improve things because I've just bought a shiny new GTX460 and I dont want the CPU to hold back the performance!

Anyway, I've got a Gelid Tranquillo doing the cooling at the moment and according to CoreTemp, the cores seem to sit around 38-40 degrees while surfing the net etc but obviously jump up when gaming (I think to around 55-60 degrees from memory)
Do these temps seem right for such a small overclock and what programs etc should I be running and how long for to check temps and stability etc?
I'm sure the cooler is OK but I installed it myself and I'm never certain if its seated perfectly or if I applied too much or too little thermal paste!!

Also I've seen reference to various settings such as vid and vcore but have no idea what they are, let alone how and when to change them!

Can anyone give me a hand overclocking my Q6600 to get it up to 3.2GHz+ whilst remaining at an acceptable temperature??

Stevie, you still have a good bit of head room temp wise, are all cores at 100% load? if so yeah, thats good temps.

You have a 6-phase motherboard and ddr 1066 ram, you have all the right bits to support a decent overclock :)

I would say its just a case of raising your FSB methodically at your current vcore and stability test each time at smallish FSB increments. When its no longer stable bump up the vcore a notch and test again. A DS3P should easily be good for a modest 400fsb at least, temps will be critical and probably the limiting factor, so keep an eye on them! Back off if your exceeding 65C

I'd advise you factor out the ram and run it 1:1 with the CPU, ie, synchronously with each other. This way you'll make sure the rams not on a silly high divider overclocking itself as you bump up the fsb, this will allowing you to focus on rising the cpu clock and not introduce any instability from the ram.
