Will, you maybe able to get a wee bit more out of your chip with a vcore mod but from general observation, people's quad overclocking on the P35C-DS3R boards generally resides at around 3.2ghz prime stable. The boards suffer badly from vdrop under load. the P35-DS3P seems to get a little more out of quads, same with the P35-DS3R, but they still suffer from vdrop and really 3.6ghz is the most ive ever seen a DS3 board do prime stable.

Omg that's um . . . . . um . . . . not what one would expect from an INTEL P35 Express chipset?

I've just plopped an average G0 Q6600 Quad into a 12 months old ASUS P5B-Deluxe (P965) and clocked it straight to 3400MHz, rock solid so I'm finding it hard to believe the Gigabyte boards are clocking so poor?

Will I know you have used an ASUS board before but next time get an ASUS board that uses an INTEL chipset, the Gigabyte boards are not good enough for you now I think?

Anyway back to the thread. . . .

Nothing that cant get a Q6600 G0 to 3.6 is good enough for me, not even the milk I drink! I'm going to flog this P35 on the bay and see if I can get a P5K without loosing any money.

That a decent mobo? I'll be getting a quad core in the next month or 2 so I hope this mobo will be fine.

Well ive always been a fan of giga boards after ditching asus as i always had problems but this P35 DS4 is not as good as my 965 DS4 was.
My E6400 did 3.5ghz (& 3.2ghz stock V) were as the P35 couldnt get it stable past 3.2ghz no matter what i did and to top it off, i have a Quad here which will do 10hours of P95 at 3.6ghz with only 1.35V but wont go any higher even with 1.6V :rolleyes:

Count yourself lucky, my Q6600 is insane.


I can get 3.2Ghz prime stable on stock volts.

However 3.33 takes 1.4V

I've got 2 options left to explore.

1) Flash the mobo to the latest BIOS, disable the onboard WiFi and hope that something in the old bios was stopping it clocking.

2) Lap the Q6600 as two of the cores are always 5C higher than the other two, and hope that the newly lapped Q6600 and even temps let me clock higher.

Wouldn't mind but the VID is only 1.2875, i've seen people with 1.325V VID chips hit 3.6!

Hmmmmm best get looking around. Why such a low clock on the Q6600?

Temps are good. TRUE is lapped. Good airflow (Akasa 62). Have 2 x 2GB PC8000 mem. I have good airflow over the chipset.

I can get into windows at 3.6 400x9 on anything between 1.425-1.5V, but anything less than 1.475V and Prime insto resets the machine.

At 1.5V it'll run prime for about 2mins then it'll either get a hardware failure, or reset the rig.

Its driving me mad.

I'll figure it out eventually.

Im now stable at 3.6 with the extra volts on chipset, fsb and pci-e.

Temps are reaching 72 C under full load, with my fans at 7v

Interestingly if I set the fans to 12v load temps are only 62 C.

Now im considering lapping and a vdroop mod and going for 3.8 :D

Anyone know a vdroop mod for a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 Rev 1?
 
How do you lap properly? I think I will have to get someone to do it for me I dare not do it, especially handling a CPU its quite worrying. I tried a Vmod on my P5N-E SLi to get rid of Vdroop but all that did was make the voltage higher!

I get £100 EMA Bonus soon that'll give me the funds to sell my P35C DS3R and maybe splash out on an X38 chipset :cool:, might be sensible and only go £20 over what I sell me P35C DS3R for though.

Works a treat, i've lapped an E6300, E6600, and i'll get round to doing this Q6600 eventually.

Just nip down to your local market, find a DIY hardware stall, ask for some 200,400,600,800,1000 grit metalwork sandpaper, it'll cost you a couple of quid tops.

When are you supposed to move to the next grit up? See it worrys me about sanding it uneven. And what about static damage how to preven that?

Basically stay on the 200 grit until all the nickel plate is gone and it's flat. (check with a metal ruler/stanley knife blade)

Once its flat move onto 400 and sand in one direction until the groves are all in the same direction (remember to rotate the chip 90 degrees every so often, but keep sanding so the grooves go the same way).

Once grooves are all the same way move onto 600 and sand in the opposite direction, do this til all the grooves are now the other way.

Repeat til 1000 grit.

1000 won't get you mirror shine, but thats not what you are after anyway, you just want it flat and not as rough as a badgers behind.

You can go all the way up to like 2000 grit and then brasso it to make it all shiny, but there really is no point, past about 800-1000 its all for looks really.


As for static, no idea, but like I say done 2 CPU's and never had a problem with it, just popped the plastic cover on the back and some masking tape down the sides to hold it on and away I went.
