***The Official Q6600 Overclocking Thread ***

this might sound like a random question, but I always test stability by priming for 8 hours, but why is 8 the magic number in overclocking circles?
Hehe well its a compromise, I've was trying to get people doing 24 hour primes stability tests but they wasn't having it so I compromised and pushed for 12 hours but the buggers come up with all sorts of excuses why they cant prime that long so in the end it 'shrunk' to just 8 hours! :D

Its still a good amount of time and I can see a few advantages to this

  • 8 x 3 = 24 hours
  • An eight hour prime session can run when u are asleep
  • An eight hour prime session can run while you are at work

taken the last 24hours to get from 3.15ghz but got to 3.33ghz so far.

9x370, ram's a bit slack timings 5,5,5,18 but the P35c-DS3R is a bugger with a rather large vdrop and also the ram voltages are a bit on the guestimate side.

1.5v bios set - 1.456v in windows and 1.392 under load.

Temps are fine @ 66 cause the wife had the heating on all day whilst i was out!! normally around the 62 mark.

I see...cheers for the info, I managed a 16 hour run last night without any errors so I think that will do, (ready for the excuse?) I had some COD4 to play so couldnt muster up the full 24 lol

Seems luike quite a drop under load, do you have the option to enable CPU Voltage Dampener in bios?

only a DS4 option that.

vr-zone have some hardcore voltage mods you can try out on the DS3R if you are brave

yeah - been reading about the voltage mods but i'm not that desperate! (yet!;))

F9 bios out for my board a couple of weeks ago - tempted to try it but happy with current new overclock. Also been folding for last 24 hours so must be stable!!

Has anyone used corsair xms2 6400 800mhz?

Oh and what ZALMAN cooler is the best? I need one with my q6600 to blow decent air onto the northbridge aswell.

If the ZALMAN is not appropriate, what else?

I dont want the thermalright 120a as i have to buy fan clips and a fan etc etc

Just tried prime again at just under 1.5v core, no more errors but after a few mins I got a BSOD. :(

Im not having much luck, temps where ok too, didnt reach 70c.

Anything else I can try?

P.S Eveset shows vcore at 1.44, under load its 1.39.

i get the exact same vdrop as you have above. have you give it +0.2 on the fsb/mch/pci-e voltages? mine then primed fine with the above voltage.

Don't worry too much Will its probably the chip :)

I dunno lots of people seem to be running into problems and I think the guy I was talking to on MSN tested a single Q6600 G0 in the P5K and then P35C.

I really REALLY dont want to get a new mobo I mean I'm having to get a new cooler I gotta get it right the first time especially since I have to take my mobo out of the case to put stuff in. I'm just going to have to wait and see, dunno how long Penryn is away but I dont know if I should hold, get a Penryn quaddy or dual core or flog my E6600 like... tomorrow on the bay and then get a Q6600 ASAP.
