**** The Official Samsung Galaxy Note 20/Ultra Thread ****

I really hope Sammy change this whole exynos business and only then would I buy. I hate paying the same price or even more, for something I know performs 20 or even 5% less!

Unfortunately I dont think that will happen. Its their own chip, so more profit for them. I think they have to use snapdragon in other regions due to carrier support in those markets.

I dont care about exynos as long as the gap wasnt as big, say circa note 9 days, when it was very little in it. Or they acknowledged it and priced it accordingly due to the gap. I think a few generations ago the gap was actually in samsungs favour. I think the snapdragon 810 was a disaster and similar to what the exynos 990 is now, it was a battery eater and ran very hot with thermal throttling etc.

Will have to see what happens with exynos 1000. Rumour is they are going back to arm cores and teaming up with AMD for the gpu. If it turns out to be a monster SoC then great for us and it gives qualcomm competition.

Thats what is needed, competion in the high end SoC market.

The correct response to preserve their reputation amongst those who follow hardware and also for their paying customers, was for Samsung to admit their own failings with the 990 and offer the Snapdragon in all regions for this generation. Instead, they chose short term profit in the hope they could ride out the reputational damage.

It says a lot about the company.

does that depend on your bank? last time i checked i dont think RBS supported samsung pay.

Indeed. My HSBC debit was fine (as it was with Google Pay) but Barclays Credit card would not work. I also went back to my Google account on the new phone to find the Barclays wouldn't work on that either. Odd but I've not used it since March for mobile phone based contactless (lunch run) due to WFH, instead of The City.

Anyway, during the on boarding process Google Pay (or Samsung Pay in this case) contact 'the bank' & do a handshake of sorts. HSBC sent me a text code, I entered that into Samsung Pay, couldn't get to that point with Barclays Credit card

I agree, I think the exynos, especially this time around, when the other markets are getting the sd+, should have been at least less than the sd+ version.

My initial review.

The packaging is very poor, doesn't reflect the fact it's a flagship phone, I honestly got a more impressive box from an anker USB cable in the same delivery. The phone itself is nice enough but I almost instantly remembered why I disliked samsung phones, their UI and screen interface is just naff. side bars, samsung pay and a gazillion menu options that are just stupidly overcomplicating what could be a decent brick. The unlocking process is too drawn out, the camera whilst amazing in some respects just has a laughable number of modes and options, I don't want to have to know which particular quality or aperture setting provides me access to the 'mighty' x50 zoom (which is fairly useless anyway), I just want to double click and take a picture. Performance wise it's awesome and the screen resolution, clarity and brightness are equally nice. But all in all, fairly poorly received by me

5/10

I'd obviously been spoilt by the google pixel 4, it honestly seems to do everything better, for less and for longer. I'm sure others will disagree, but I call a spade a spade, if I dump a load of cash on an item I'm not afraid to call it out if it's not up to the hype train it arrives on.

If they fixed pokemon go, this review would get at least a 6/10 maybe more :p

You should be able to hide most of those extra camera modes so they don’t clutter up the interface. I don’t have a Samsung at the mo so can’t give clear instructions on how to do so.

Also, it does take a while to fine tune the rest of the software because there’s so much stuff. I was still discovering new things a long time after I bought mine.

No matter how much you think Samsung should admit about various problems they have had with there phones. Samsung can not admit to anything even if they wanted to. It would open up the floodgates for people sueing them. If you think about it they have kinda already done so in part. with non snapdragon varients getting more base storage. I think tbh that is the most people are going to get from them. Is is it rite or fair nope, but it is what it is.

Google have great cloud based picture algorithms, clean stock android but terrible hardware, they look cheap, plastic, dated. Fine at the right price but they charge premium prices. All the phone critics say the same, if only they built a premium looking (and feeling) device to go with their software.

You can use it for lots of actions within other apps like coping editing urls in browsers you can also screen grab parts of the screen and its very accurately with the Spen . Some of my favorites are translate ,magnify & smart select as spen actions

I also like to be childish and draw on pic's my mate sends me if you get my drift and send back ;)
Thanks.
It’s main use for me would be writing notes that either convert to text or save as they are.
I use my iPad a lot for that so having something smaller would be great.
Torn between this or waiting for the Surface Duo.
Normally an iPhone person as well so weighing that up as I like the integration with other products, but really want to try a stylus phone.
Other thing holding me back is the screen, I thought the new one was flat, but it still has the curved edges doesn’t? Seem to waste a notable amount of the actual measured size really with that.

Yes curved edges but I wouldn't say you lose much on the actual measured size because the curve is quite sharp and drops off quick.

I'm loving the phone so far. Really smooth & responsive and the camera is seriously impressive. I'm struggling to find a decent way to view my 4K videos and photos on my 4K OLED though. Dex and any screen mirroring is heavily compressed. I can use a usb stick but this feels really antiquated. I'm wondering if there are apps I can load onto my shield? Or a long type c to HDMI cable?

Samsung do a silicone cover in black but it's not cheap at £24
If you're not too worried about protection, you can't get much thinner than a Debrand skin:)
