Additional Information

Release date

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 went on sale in the UK just moments after its unveiling and will start shipping on 15 September.

Price

Samsung's own website has started taking Note 8 pre-orders. The smartphone, along with a dual-SIM variant, can both be picked up for £869 SIM-free.
  • Carphone Warehouse has started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 8. It's on sale for £869 SIM-free, and the retailer is also offering handset on tariffs with EE, iD, O2 and Vodafone, with prices starting from £56 per month for a 24-month contract with 10GB monthly data. It's also throwing in a free DeX station worth £139.99.
  • EE is also offering a free DeX dock to those who pre-order before 14 September. The firm is recommending its £62.99 per month tariff, which comes with 15GB data and an upfront cost of £49.99.
  • O2 has been quick to open up pre-orders. Over on its website, the Galaxy Note 8 can be picked up for £49.99 on a choice of £56, £66, £76 and £96 (!) tariffs, which come with 3GB, 10GB, 30GB or 50GB monthly data.
  • Three is taking pre-orders, and is also chucking in a free DeX dock. It's offering 1GB data for £48 per month (with a £99 upfront cost), 12GB data for £56 per month (£79 upfront) and 100GB data for £64 per month (£79 upfront).
  • Vodafone has started taking orders for the Note 8 and, surprise surprise, is also offering a free DeX. Prices start from £44 a month with a £300 upfront cost, which gets you 500MB data and 500 minutes per month. If you're after more data, Vodafone is offering 16GB and 32GB for £60 and £66 a month, respectively, with a £50 upfront cost.

Tips & Tricks

Background/ad-free YouTube (non-root method)

The XDA thread is here. I did the following to get it working:

  • In the Mediafile directory - navigate to the 12.40.59 folder
  • Then the non-root folder
  • Download appropriate APK (either black or not black)
  • Install the APK
  • To fix the sign in bug, download the microG app found in the root Mediafile folder and install
  • Sign in through the modded YouTube app (it should appear as a separate app to the original YouTube)
All working fine here and in black :D

User tips

  • In Developer Options - change the animation scales (3 instances) to 0.5x for a smoother feel
  • Install Package Disabler Pro - this is a handy app that disables a lot of bloatware (and more if you wish)
  • Install Greenify - which puts unused apps to sleep

Android 8.0 - Oreo

It appears Samsung have begun their months long process of seeding 8.0 to the Exonys N8s in France around mid-March 2018. Users can manually flash the official 8.0 ROM without tripping KNOX, or just wait until it seeds to you (but for some this could be a long wait). Everything you need to know can be found here (thanks Cosimo) and please note, if you flash - you flash at your own risk but it's a fairly simple process :). Fast working download links (painfully slow on Samsung's website otherwise) can be found here for the ROM. Please remember all of this relates to the Exonys version of Oreo.

Android 9.0 - Pie

This will be the last major update for the Note 8, should start seeding from February 2019.

Thank you to @Funky-Melon for notifying us about a way to get the Pie beta. If you have the 'Samsung Members' app you can get Pie beta installed now :). You may need to restart for the update to show when you do a manual check for software updates.

The S8+ is narrower and thinner than the Note 4, as well as being lighter, but all with a much bigger screen.

Screen to body ratios are such today that the new Note will almost certainly be easier to hold and feel great in the hand (ladies...) than any flagship before them. Notes before the Note 7 were bit and thick. This is not the case any more

Yeah the note 8 is probably going to be my next phone for sure. I have a note 4 at the moment which I love but its getting on now and getting pretty slow.

I bought the Galaxy s8+ which surprisingly even though a lot of the review videos were saying the plus version might be too big... I felt the opposite. It was actually smaller than I imagined and I could happily go with an even bigger screen on the note 8. Either way I took the S8+ back yesterday because of a tint issue and decided I'm just going to wait for the note 8 now as I love the note phones having owned both the note 3 and 4.

For me the perfect note 8 would have these features added over the S8.....

Finger print sensor inside the screen....That would be awesome.

6GB of ram. I feel like we've been hovering around 4GB for too long now while it seems fine in the S8... Id feel like my phone was more futureproofed if we get 6GB in the Note 8.

4k screen. 6GB of ram would help with this for a start plus since we're recording 4k videos it would be nice to have a 4k screen to match. It would also be great for VR and make the note 8 probably the ultimate phone for VR. Also for anyone saying a 4k screen isn't needed all they need to do is give us the option to change the resolution so if your not using VR... or want to save battery you can just reduce it down. Everybody wins!

Dual Camera setup. I have a feeling this is going to be a given.

Stereo Speakers. I also listen to music on my phone when working out... so it would be nice to have stereo sound.

I doubt all of these will happen... but that would make it a definite purchase for me if they did.

I hate the trend towards non-removable batteries - friend of mines housemate went abroad for a couple of weeks leaving their phone behind with an alarm still set and the phone locked even turning the phone off it still went off continually and ever increasing loudness and persistence until silenced and even then he had like 5 snooze entries - nothing we could do to silence it without being able to remove the battery. Owner was leery of providing the unlock code for some reason lol. I believe the phone came to a violent end after a week of it.

Really hope for a decent Note 4 replacement as I've never been 100% happy with mine despite overall being a decent phone.

Tried that - it was getting really loud if left to go and waking them up very early - pretty much nothing would muffle it. Dunno why the person who owned it wouldn't just give them the pin lol prolly had porn or something on it.

Samsung have claimed it will be innovative but a little part of me worries they will play it too safe coupled with it using the same guts as the S8+ - the + phones and Notes are very similar these days.

That concept vid has completely wrong aspect ratio, it's simply not happening, looks exactly like s8 but stretched to 18.6x12 ? Poor job.
Not sure the Longphone aspect ratio is really suited to a Note. Hopefully Samsung will see sense and create a 2017 version of the Note 4 and leave the edge gimmick / pointless aspect ratio to the mainstream S phones.
Yeah you're right it won't happen!!

I don't think a complete one-off incident involving someone else's phone is really a reason to hate non-removable batteries!

Had a few instances where being able to remove the battery (to hard restart, etc.) would have solved an issue that otherwise was complicated but also it isn't that unusual for li-ion batteries to die prematurely, etc. - when you deal with as many devices as I do you soon learn to hate the ones with batteries that can't trivially be removed/replaced.

It was just an example that stuck out in my head recently.

I Can't think of any reason at all why I would want a non-removable battery in my mobile phone..

But can think of quiet a few reasons for wanting a removable battery

The are no advantages to non removable batteries for consumers apart from maybe the phone ending up 1mm thinner as they can factory pack things more tightly. I suppose it's easier to get waterproof rating on factory sealed and glued up phone as well.

It's simply there to make more money for manufacturer as if your battery dies or deteriorates you have to pay £200 to replace it rather than £20, or simply get a new phone, which is what most do.

I'd be happier with a thicker phone tbh, even if it didn't involve a removable battery (which I'd prefer anyway)

Add an extra 1mm or 1.5mm and fill it with battery. That'd help with some of the battery life issues.

I think the reason they're trying to make phones thinner each year is because they're working on foldable phones, where ideally you'd want 1.5cm or less once folded. Surface phone and such will be the next big thing in 2019-2020. I can see Note X being like a mini surface pro maybe with screen unfolding into 1 big one.
