***The Official Samsung Galaxy S III Thread***

Still worried that I might have a pink tinge but might just be the brightness setting? What's the best way to check?

Also I can't seem to activate swype on this phone it fails to parse package.anyone got it to install?

Lastly I am getting 1.5meg on the one plan with three, less than half what i get on t-mobile. Friend on a cheaper plan with the but with all you can eat is getting 6.5meg down.dame area. Is the one plan a limited speed network?

Also cpw didn't have any stock so I got straight from three, how big a mistake is that, will their branding and influence gimp my phone at all?

Not finding it very smootheven now on the browser, scrolling is kind of choppy n have a hard time putting cursor where I want when editing as keeps flicking up a line :( sorry so negative think it's buyers remorse

I'm seriously being tempted away from Apple by this phone. I've had a iPhone for the last 4 years and have always been very happy. I've also bought over 400 Apps off the App store. I do own a new iPad so I'll still have access to the App store and my Apps if I did go over to Android.

The things that are tempting me are Screen size - I would love a large screen and no way will Apple offer this kind of size, Price - All that power for much less than an iPhone, Being able to use a memory card and swap batteries just wow :)

Only negative for me is Google Play it just doesn't even come close to the App Store and yes I do use the Market on my Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus.

go for it tbh.. you got a galaxy tab so you know if you like android or not and this is the top headset at the moment!

not sure if this is normal, but on black screens I can see 'blacker' lines at first I thought was a crack until went only colored page and no problem, almost like dead pixels but only on black?

Don't know why people were saying that no other launcher is as smooth as tw because I have just been setting up apex, nova and go on 2 phones and all are just as smooth.

Also the invisible shield is a very nice screen protector on the s3, it really is invisible on the white phone and you could use it case free if one is applied to the back too as it gives plenty of extra grip.

Finally a video:

You do have to be slow with panning, zooming is fiddly can produce bad results.

Nice video!

I have to say though, I found it rather underwhelming, the detail captured is fine but the movement is all over the place. It doesn't seem any better than other phones. :(

Anyway, drop test vs the iPhone:

The S3 doesn't seem all that sturdy, the screen cracked from a side drop, and the touchscreen itself stopped working. I think the golden rule for any phone is (no matter what glass/design it has) to make sure you don't drop it face down, that seems to be devastating. :p

Spanks it? Nah! :p

The main difference hardware wise is the screen, which is obviously a lot bigger on the S3. This doesn't automatically mean everyone will prefer it.

Performance wise they are similar. Camera wise, fairly even. Video recording, fairly even.

Battery life wise (ignoring people with dodgy battery issues), roughly even.

Software side of things - totally personal choice. Design? iPhone is a lot nicer.

The main difference hardware-wise is the screen? Eh?

The CPU and chipset is a fair bit more powerful than that in the iPhone 4S overall... http://www.anandtech.com/show/5810/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-performance-preview

Yes, the single biggest difference hardware wise is the screen, it's 1.3 inches bigger...

Just seen your edit: you seriously think that hardware benchmarks are a bigger factor than the screen and size of the phone?!

It is. Put them side and that's what anyone would point out. Most people won't care/know what CPU, RAM is in a phone.

I'm still thinking of getting an S3 purely for something new to play with, but after having a go on one now I can't say I'm hugely wowed.

If you were talking on a forum where people didn't give a stuff about tech then ok, fine, but his is OCUK forums, we expect a little more than wishy washy statements containing generalised ****.

To me the Exynos SOC used inside and the performance I can get is also a huge factor... the GPU performance is awesome. I don't care whetrher the unwashed masses care about that... I and 90% of people here are not the unwashed masses, we care about our tech.

So you still think the internals are a bigger factor than the screen? Even people here would disagree with that.

The iPhone is hardly slow and in operation the differences are negligible so it's really not relevant. You're just being petty for the sake of it.

all aspects are important in different ways to different people.

the cpu is nice but the sgs2 is actually (1st time i can say this) fast enough for day to day use. some new features are nice (the camera looks great). but, for me i want the next note. a 5" screen and hopefully a newer soc (the sgs3 has quad A15 right? but i thought that a dual A9 could be faster than that).

If by 'biggest factor' we are talking about the aspect of the phone that has the greatest influence on day-to-day enjoyment of the phone, then the answer for almost everyone (geeks included) is obviously the screen, since a) it's being interacted with constantly and b) in most scenarios you won't notice the difference in CPU / GPU power between it and the iPhone.

Tech geeks are interested in screens as well as GPU benchmarks, so this being OcUK has no bearing, especially considering Robbo's original comment was a general one. He didn't qualify it by restricting its relevance only to OcUK members.

If the screen was the single deciding factor then I would have bought a HTC One X, because it has a better screen.

Fact is the SGS III has a good screen, and amazing internal hardware and huge battery, and those things in combination are more important to me than the screen overall. The same way I care about spec of an device that i buy... I want the best and fastest for my money when taken as a whole. I wonder how many of you would consider the SGS III if the SOC was an OMAP 4460, would you overlook that for the screen?

So no, not being petty, I just disagree with you and your repeated statements about how the iPhone 4 is "essentially the same".

I have found it disappointing but that can be helped with very slow panning. My choice of subject matter does not help. Zooming is just not very useable. These deficiencies are made up for in the camera department. Still if you compare it to other phones it’s very good in its class and I don’t see many people being disappointed with it overall. For me there is still quite a way to go before I remove my little Canon gem from my pocket.

What on earth are you talking about? Where have I said the iPhone 4 is essentially the same?!

All I've said is that the single biggest hardware difference is the screen, and it is. I don't see how that's wrong. If I had said the only difference was the screen, then fair enough, but I didn't.

Cheers :)

Yeah, I compared it to your CL final footage and the Canon is better by a long way, I'd certainly opt for that if the video was of some importance!

The 4460? I would! (if it was a 32nm part :p)

If your after ultimate performance it's probably better to wait for the big boys later on in the year (there's already a A15, T604, APQ8064 prototype monsters with 2GB floating around)

I'd wonder just how many people know what that even means without looking it up. I'm hardly a technophobe, and I didn't :p

I had trouble working out what SOC was as well. Don’t you just hate these geeky types who try and impress with buzz words and abbreviations. :p:D

im starting to fear taking this to work on Wednesday! i'm a mechanical engineer and get dirty hands all day so starting to worry about the phone getting dirty/marked!

however the iphone 4 i had before was great, just put it on the side at work didnt ever worry about a case etc but may need a decent one for this baby!

so far the transition from iphone to this has been amazing, feels nice to have a change of phone after soo long and android has come along way from what i thought of it before i had one.

whats the best case out there? the phones for u chap gave me a starter kit (screen protector etc) and a rear cover, but wouldn't mind something a bit more protective for work!
