***The Official Samsung Galaxy S III Thread***

Stock 4.3 is nasty slow and full of bugs, if you want a stable ROM, best to go with SlimKat or CyanogenMod.

Network unlock is only needed if you want to use a different netwoek to what its Locked to

Nice guide in your sig bigboy but im confused is that slimkat app an app or a rom ? which downloads would I get for an s3 with android 4.3 ? im looking for a slimkat 4.3 rom file? and still need to use slimkat app ?

Philz Touch Recovery < which version should I download ? theres like 50 files on the link
SlimKat Gapps Package < same as above so many files none seem to be for android 4.3 ?

seems way too complicated because it doesn't define what is for which version of android ?

I go on slimkat site and theres nothing there for android 4.3 either

Philz touch is no longer worked on so the last release was philz_touch_6.48.4-i9300 you need the Odin package if its your first flash md5.tar

Slimkat is a 4.4.* ROM not 4.3 that's where your going wrong on the slimrom site go to downloads and 4.4.4 and grab the latest nightly zip for the i9300

Again with the Gapps package go to downloads/addons and grab the mini zip package (my preference as I don't use google+)

Flash Philz with Odin reboot to recovery and wipe data/factory reset when it says are you putting a new ROM on say yes (your new ROM packages must be on the the external SDCard) then go to advanced and wipe dalvik. Now your ready to install you new ROM.

Basically follow the walkthrough in my SIG replacing the parts that apply with the ROM and gapps package that you downloaded.

what does nightly mean is that an abbreviation there is no 4.4.4 section only 4.4 and nothing called "nightly" anywhere thanks for the help am sure im getting annoying now though lol.

ah cheers I just want something stable don't want to be messing around updating maybe i'll just try a bloatware remover and stick to 4.3
it's so confusing no idea what to start with to root, wish there was a step by step idiots guide for the exact model GT I9300 with android 4.3.

Slimkat 4.4 is awesome so much smoother than 4.3 will ever be and could not be easier to update. If you want to (you don't have to). Nightlys are builds that are auto generated after additions have been made by the Devs.

Honestly stay away from 4.3 4.4.4 slim and you will never look back! Well maybe need to change the DPi of the screen as slim use a very low DPi.

Oh and root, you don't need to root if you install slimkat as its already rooted!

I'd like to but theres no step by step noob guide i can find
my confusion is do i need a specific version IF im starting with a stock 4.3 ? will a 4.4 rom work etc etc etc like i dont want to flash slimkat 4.4 if i have to do other stuff first to a 4.3 02 phone before i can flash slimkat 4.4 to it and so on

Ignore the fact you have 4.3 on the device already it makes no difference!

My guide is all you need. The files you need are in the downloads/4.4/i9300 section of the slimkat website its not hard to work it out!

Hi,

I am just about to start over with my S3 and was wondering you lot think is the best custom rom?

I have been using SlimKat for a long time, I tried Cyanogenmod a long time ago but wasn't keen.

I see a lot of you also use SlimKat and looking at my phone I have a rather ancient version installed... 3.0.64

Is SlimKat the way to go?

Cheers

Swizzle, get the latest SlimKat on there (update your recovery first) and you should be golden :)

As for best custom ROM, that depends on what you want, Slim and CyanogenMod are the most stable and there for the best daily driver. but there are literally hundreds of different ROMs to choose from. Get over to XDA and take a look!

new Anker battery for my S3, wow just showed how goosed the original battery was.

2300MAh vs. 7200MAh is a very big difference in battery size and battery life limit. Unless you have the 4400MAh battery?

I still think Zero Lemon has a better grade and quality of reviews in strength against it.

Yeah cheers, I decided to stick with SlimKat as I'm used it and its soooo stable compared to the version I was using! Also discovered that the battery was faulty though, very bloated... which wasn't helping things!

Before I updated, when I was having battery problems, I installed a program called CPU Tuner. I've put it on again and since doing so I'm now getting about 2 days use out of my battery and doesn't seem to be affecting the performance at all.
Highly recommend you give that a go ;)

Not in the near future. As there is no s3 source code for lollipop its going go tale time to reverse engineer drivers and do on.

That said, Archi over on XDA has been working on it for a while and has a working port but its far from a daily use port.
