lenses that can handle 100x cost into thousands and thats before all the smartphone etc bits come into play. To have a high quality 100x zoom you're looking into 10k+ camera setup.

I've read varying reports that the S20 Ultra has either 4x or 5x optical zoom. Everything above that is hybrid and at 100x, the S20 Ultra is definitely NOT high quality. It's a gimmick as many early commentators have said, though this doesn't mean it won't take high quality photos at lower levels of zoom.

If you want something that has 5x optical in a digital camera, a quick check on Argos shows you can get a Sony Cybershot with 5x optical zoom for 80 quid.

Unless I have completely misunderstood your point that is just not the case. Can you not pick up any half decent bridge camera that can do 100x zoom (optical and digital combined admittedly) and beyond for well under £500? There's a Nikon that does 125x which is purely optical for £900.

What phones can do with the camera is rather amazing, but people need to remember that the size of the sensor in a phone and a standalone camera are substantially different in and pretty much everything image related.

And that Sony Cybershot with 5x optical zoom for 80 quid has a phone ? nad is as thin as a phone. can play music can play games on it also ? .
Just kidding in reality for a phone the ultra is very good now when some people are trying to compare it with a camera or high end glass for a camera makes me laugh.

When something is 1200 quid and sold on the basis of how amazing the "100x zoom" camera is, people will have high expectations.

I hope the final product sets a new bar for camera phones, but I'm waiting to see some proper reviews. What I've seen so far looks ok-to-good, but I've seen plenty of decent low-light shots from other phones.

Maybe you've just fallen for the advertising tag line?

Because it's got all that plus being an absolutely top of the line phone.

I'm not saying they get a free pass but as folks start whining before there's even a proper review it's all a bit "elbows too pointy"... Got it, you wouldn't bang.. fine

Should have it on all models as video recording is no different across the range. It's likely OIS though as the S20 has revised OIS I heard. Means no more cropped video FOV as with EIS/Super Steady.

Where do you get that from?

A 3000x zoom cost about £600(NIKON COOLPIX) it users the same crappy sensor as a phone.
It's not the lens\sensor that makes the difference on a phone. It's the software. The Pixel 4 has proved this.

The more I see of the S20 I wanna try it as a current iPhone user.

The regular S20 anyway.

Don’t know why but yeah.

Been way from Android for several years
