**** The Official Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ Thread ****

How are people' phone signals? I'e had my s8 for about 2 weeks but I only get 1-2 bars at home where before I had full signal with my one plus 3.

On Vodafone and have compared to my old Moto x Style which I considered a good phone for signal reception and the S8 seems slightly better. I'm going on the bar readout which is not really an accurate assessment. But what is accurate is the S8 hangs onto 4g and a signal better than the X Style at a site I work at with marginal signal.

Mine has arrived, done the updates and now charging.

Any tips? What is best to avoid screen burn in and screen degradation? i.e. should I have a screen saver turned on for when the phone charges?

Forgot just how much bloat there was with samsung! Hoping I'll be able to disable most, if not all of it......

EDIT:

What about the always on display?

Don't let it go on max brightness, mine did one day when I wasn't paying attention using it as sat nav when it was sunny and completely ruined the screen in just a couple of hours.

To be honest I've not had any concerns about screen burn. I got a little app off xda that turns AoD on when charging as charge at bedside to use as click and alarm. AoD other than charging I don't bother with. I thought it was turning screen on in pocket even though I had option to keep off in pocket. Turns out it is the pesky home button - now turned off.

Bloat can be disabled. I use Package Disabler pro.

Other than that I use nova launcher and find the phone great. AoD on Charge app;

https://www.google.com/search?q=AoD+on+charge+app&client=ms-opera-mobile&channel=new

Get a case or skin cos it's as slippery as a wet bar of soap. Don't bother with screen protectors. If you're careful the glass should be fine. Constant fast charging may shorten battery life (heat?). I use a standard charge pad overnight. Oh, and don't drop it onto hard surfaces as it's bound to end badly.

Thanks will check out those apps.

And yeah nova first thing I installed! Got it mostly setup to my liking now.

EDIT:

And yup got the dragon skin from dbrand on its way.

Couple more questions.

What ad blocker does everyone use?

I was using adblock plus on my 5x with samsung internet browser but just wondering if there anything better for the samsung phones?

PS.

Read that using the colours screen saver is very good to help with burn in and keep the oled from degrading over time.

EDIT:

Also what screen res. is best "overall"?

And there's 2 things I won't be doing now :p

- installing bixby remap
- installing package disabler

Apparently these 2 things cause lag according to some reddit users.....

Yup, seems to cause more problems in the long run. I'll just stick to disabling apps via system settings.

Can Bixby be disabled from there?

Never knew that of package Disabler. Only used it to knock Bixby on the head.

Nah bixby can't be disabled from there along with a lot of other samsung apps. Essentially people say that if certain apps are tied into other apps and you disable them, it can slow down apps/system that you use because those apps/background system processes might be trying to connect to the other said apps/background processes e.g. bixby being linked into the stock camera app etc. and then this essentially causes an error, which then proceeds to create a log and over time this will build up clogging the phone up.

Will try to find the reddit post on it again.

Ah right, I get the idea. Unistalled PD now.

How do people find the curved screen on the S8+?

I'm looking for a new phone with a good camera (coming from a OP3), and these are coming up for around £600 now. But the curved screen is putting me off a little.

It more video playback via youtube i guess i'm most concerned with.

I only had Bixby disabled using PDP. Never got round to disabling other stuff, not that any of the bloat seemed an issue. Of course Bixby is back now. Don't really see the point. Don't ask Google assistant anything verbally and it seems Bixby just mirrors google assistant. Only time I use voice commands is when driving and phone connected to head unit using android auto. That works very well, just ask Google to search for a destination and you're good to go with a route in Google maps on pioneer head unit. Using pioneer sat nav and searching for a destination by typing seems long winded in comparison.

I've not had any noticeable slow downs or lag. Never bothered with a button remapper for the Bixby button either.

Yeah some people who have disabled a **** ton of stuff have said they not noticed any slow down. I'll just leave mine for now and if/when the phones gets laggy then look at package disabler.

Are you happy with the camera?

Not really used it much yet.

From what I have taken so far though, it is no doubt a great camera. Still think I prefer the more natural/untouched look of the 5x/6p/pixel phones HDR+ mode.

Video recording is superb though, I am just using the default FHD option as all the other features are only compatible with it.

The fingerprint scanner location really is ******* retarded though, touched the camera lens so many times now, hoping when the dbrand skin gets here, it might not be so bad.....

What screen res. mode do people use? I enabled the max and text is noticeably sharper/clearer, however, I've read that apparently it is more likely to cause burn in???

Seems like most agree there is little to no difference in battery or performance (outside of gaming)
