The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Thank you for the prompt reply bluetonic

I guess by satisfactory I mean being able to run REX and PMDGX addons and whichever latest traffic addon is recommended. UTX was the last one I seen released. It seems i5 may be the only way to go. In those recommendations I see there are £160+ graphics cards, are those necessary since much emphasis is placed on CPU power?

Thanks for the help

People rate NVidia for FSX as there's further tweaks to get better visuals.

If you did get a new spec, you could scrimp on the GFX this time round and buy a better card in the future.

Maybe ask for an FSX spec in the general hardware section?

Ok will do thanks! Might have to be a 2 part build I guess, do graphics later. I take it Soya's spec is the highest in terms of someone who is running FSX? Anyone know if he gets any sort of lag in the program, or does it run pretty much 100% smoothly no matter what you throw at it?

Soya has mentioned before that his system runs as well as the pictures show.

Rumour has it that he managed an extra 14 fps when he water cooled it using 8 part albino ferret urine to 2 part badger tears.

I get lag on my system making cabin announcements.

Actually my FSX runs okay and lags at busy airports on multiplayer. But I am running 5 other bits of software when on multiplayer.

Hey guys, long time lurker here! I've always been interested in getting into FSX and after reading through this thread and seeing some of the amazing pictures I decided to get it last month, some add-ons and a decent joystick.

Here are some pictures of the first few flights I've been doing *Picture heavy*:

Dappo,

Great pictures. You gotta love the Islander.

As for flying and landing properly, all you need to do is join in on one of our evening sessions and if you're willing to learn, we're willing to teach. You'll need: FSX w/SP2, Mumble Voice Client software, a VATSIM account, a Gamespy account and a headset and mic.

It's best to start off small in the default Cessna 172 and get the basics done. Learn to taxi, takeoff, fly a circuit, land, taxi and learn some Air Traffic Control speak along the way.

I'll hopefully be online tonight.

Hi Dappo,

Out of interest, (as I'm looking at getting more and more into this) what addons did you purchase, and what freeware did you use?

Also what Joystick did you purchase? I have a Logitech one, but I'm looking at a good "Simulator" type one, with the throttle unit.

Thanks

excellent photos Dappo....

As blue mentioned, come fly on-line with us. A few of us get online once or twice during the week and sometimes over the weekend. Blue and chaders are brilliant teachers :)

I'm now a captain for FedEx :D

Thanks guys!

I love the Islander, I've been using it in Air Hauler as its the only plane I can land without any issues. :P

That sounds good, I'd definitely love to learn how to do everything properly. I lack a headset at the moment though, but was looking to get one next payday so can hopefully join in from then.

Hey, the addons I've got so far are:

Weather and scenery:
REX Essentials
UTX Europe
GEX Europe
FS Global 2010
Mogwaisoft - Shade
ENB mods from the REX forum
Horizon VFR Generation X v3
Aerosoft Germany VFR West/ South
NL2000v4
Belgium 2012 Photoscenery (from avsim.net)
Aerosoft UK VFR Airfields 1/2/3
UK2000 Stansted/Gatwick/Heathrow
Aerosoft Mega Airport Frankfurt
Aerosoft German Airports 3
Treescapes UK collection.

I have also used some free airports and scenery from http://www.freewarescenery.com/fsx.html

Aircraft:
Flight1 Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander
Justflight 747 200/300 + livery packs
Justflight A319 Jetliner + livery packs
Wilco 737 Pilot in Command Evolution Deluxe
PMDG 737NGX
I've been using some planes from Project Open Sky which are free as well as some from simviation and avsim.

Other:
Ultimate Traffic 2 with Summer 2012 schedule
Air Hauler
FSPS Real Cockpit Effect
EZDok Camera (Looking to buy TrackIR 5 soon)
Drubware FS Cabin Crew (English and German)
FSPassengers

Some of the scenery and plane addons I've managed to get fairly cheap off of the bay as well.

I read reviews of different joysticks and as I also wanted one with a separate throttle unit so I eventually decided to get the Saitek X52 Pro. I would definitely recommend this joystick as it offers excellent control, its easy to create and edit profiles and the two units can be separated quite a distance from each other to fit most any setups.

(Sorry for bad phone camera quality)

I look forward to joining you guys once I get a new headset and then hopefully you can teach me to be competent in a cockpit. :D

Here are two small test video clips I've made showing me flying the Islander manually struggling to maintain 3000ft in bad weather trying to deliver cargo from Shoreham to Wycombe Air Park.
I was too n00b to remove the menu bar. :/

Part 1: http://youtu.be/LZxSavSg3IM?hd=1
Part 2: http://youtu.be/yMGxoeAwLg4?hd=1

Does anyone know how I can record the ATC chatter but not have the window pop up when ATC talks to me? I tried using FSRecorder but haven't found if this is possible. I was lucky in my two clips using FRAPS that ATC was directing others and not me. Thanks.

A few more pictures :)

Hey Guys.

I currently have REX installed, however can you add other "skyline" addons, to work WITH rex, rather than against it? Such as Active SKy 2012?

I'm also looking for good Airport addons, I've come across the UK2000 stuff, is this any good?

Thanks guys.

I don't know about the active sky things, but..

UK2000 scenery is excellent. They sometimes do specials on their products.

I have Cardiff, Edinburgh, Bristol, Heathrow and Gatwick and their one of their VFR packages. You can download lite versions for free I think.

I will hopefully be online for a bit early evening to blow the dust of my virtual yoke.

Welcome to some of the newcomers in this thread, some even new to FSX. Some nice shots above, thanks for contributing, some shots do seem a little dark for my taste but I know the ENB mod can be a little dark when pointing the camera angle towards the ground, it suddenly removes much of the brightness (could turn off ENB when you do those kinds of shots or tweak ENB ini file a bit more, just a suggestion).

As for getting up and running with FSX, there is tons of useful helps/tips and links in this thread, best to probably start at the last page and work your way backwards as most recent links/info will be more uptodate.

Hardware: As others have mentioned, FSX uses mainly CPU power, eats it for breakfast/lunch/dinner and in-between snacks, so the most vital thing is to try and get the best overclock-able CPU & M/b you can get your hands on in terms of money vs value. You can see my setup in my sig, that system is already old (2 years) but still runs FSX pretty good. The reason I seem to have easy pleasing screen shots is down to several factors 1) Addons, without at least a few decent addons, FSX is not going to look great vanilla, IMO most essential is REX, for the rest there is plenty of excellent freeware aircraft & scenery (see links throughout this thread) 2) tweaking, tweaking and forever tweaking, learn about how FSX behaves and how it runs best over time on your specific PC. With the info both in this thread and very helpful forums around the net, it is not too difficult to get your FSX to run better/faster & smoother but it does take patience, don't expect not to have problems along the way and don't expect overnight results. For me personally it took @1.5 years before I felt my FSX run good enough to post screen shots and even during the past @3 years I think my screen shots have steadily improves due to both tweaking/hardware/software & screen shot skills. 3) Resolution/TBM/Nvidia & Nvidia Inspector, the higher resolution you can run FSX at, the better the visuals, as for most games/sims. I run at 2560x1600 so by the time I take screen shots and carefully reduce them to postable size, it will show much more detail & clarity then if I were to take screen shots at a lower resolution like when I had my old PC 1920x1080, not saying you cannot make it look great at 1080p, I did on my old PC as you can see from my screen shots early in this thread, but higher res is better IMO. Nvidia & Nvidia inspector essential in getting the best out of FSX in both terms of smoothness and using AA & AF to get the sharpest textures. TBM (Texture Bandwidth Max) I always have at 4096 nowadays as most GFX cards can easily handle the higher textures display without hardly losing any FPS. 4) Last but not least, getting good screen shots takes time and experience and perhaps a small amount of talent too, as I mentioned, I been at it for more then 3-4 years now, if you check my shots on my photobucket account and compare the first ones I uploaded to most recent, you can see a huge difference.

Visuals vs smoothness (constant FPS), on my current hardware/settings, I lock my FPS at 30 and is usually stays there and is generally 95% smooth. If you take my most recent shots (above of the Panther & Blue Sky scenery) then I easily get 30fps & smooth flying. However, if you see some of my shots of busy airports with lots of AI traffic about then naturally my FPS will drop accordingly and the smoothness goes. In those situations I only overdo the AI traffic due to taking screen shots, normally if I fly and land at a large airport I have to adjust my settings if I want to keep to some reasonable smooth flying. If I had a money tree in my garden then I would upgrade my 2 year old system and get a six-core liquid cooled CPU running @5Ghz with a GTX690 which would further reduce my FPS limitations and remove more stutters. So when it comes to hardware consideration, as I mentioned, find the best value vs performance for your budget but keep room for steady upgrades every @2 years or so, especially CPU & M/B upgrades.

I think that about cover it, one more thing, FSX (or simming in general) is very much a future investment or at least that is the way I see it. I have spend £1000s on hardware/software & countless hours of time into FSX over the past 4-5 years but that time & money spend is not lost like it is with general PC games & online MMOs etc, for the simple reason that both your knowledge/experience continues to grow with FSX. It is extremely unlikely that FSX will be replaced anytime soon and even if it does (Prepare3D might in the near future) most hardware/software/addons will most likely be @90% compatible with a new flight sim in the future, so the money investment is sound. And as for time investment, there is so much to learn about flying (I myself still have much to learn about proper procedures as I mostly fly for fun and the view) but you can spend the rest of your life learning it as fast/slow as you like. I will most likely retire someday and still be flight simming and probably only then have the time and inclination to learn how to really fly properly :).

Cheers all, happy flying.
