The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

absolutely free, http://www.greekphotoscenery.com/

it covers the whole country, 7GB in total. its basically flying in google earth

So after finding this thread I decided to read from post 1 to 2481 :p. All I can say is wow! The pics alone are incredible and made me rush out and grab all the VFR for the UK (just waiting on the rest of Scotland and N.I.). I also picked up all the NL2000, Greek and Spanish free scenery posted here :). Not actually had a chance to test the Spain photo-scenery however I believe I have it all installed ok. Has anyone installed the Greek photo-scenery in the above link and is willing to share that part of their scenery config file?

I was trying to tweak my fsx config file late on Sat night and seemed to have botched something as I get a black screen now whenever I load a flight however I can hear engine noises and get the pause menu when I press escape :(. Can anyone think of a simple option that would cause this? Unfortunately I didn't bother backing up my config file (yeah yeah I know...) although I have got older backups that I will probably have to sort through to find the rogue code. So far I've been quite disappointed with how my scenery looks however I think I need to go through all the in-game settings and tweak things a lot more. Will probably never get the same quality as Soya but my GFX gard is only 1gb (think its a 560Ti) and I've still got a few years of catching up to do ;) Need to get a decent cooler for my i5 2500K so I can overclock it quite a bit as well as it's running stock (I know thats a crime:eek: ).

What are the current best freeware/payware aircraft for a novice? I've only got the default ones so far and need some bling. The PMDG stuff looks great but seems a bit steep for now both in cost and learning. Purchased EGPF V3 from UK2000 at the weekend but again not been able to enjoy that due to the above. Looked great in the pics on their site :p. Was going to get Heathrow as well but will hold out for the updated version whenever it's released (or is it really that good that I need it now?).

I used to play Flight Simulator 2004. Is this worth it? For simulators, I am more into racing simulations, but thought this be worth a try :p

I'd give it a go felton1592. FSX Gold is dirt cheap to buy and although I'm only a novice I'm totally hooked. Never played FS2004 though so can't comment on any differences. I'm only playing on a 360 controller as I'm saving for a nice Saitek yoke and peddles but it's still fun!

Yeah, 360 pad here too. MS Flight was okay, but i'm sure they're different. Something good to try again :p

Not played MS Flight but everyone that's played FS(insert number here) seems to comment on how Flight is not really a "Sim" and seems disappointed. I tried downloading it a few times but it kept crashing when I tried to launch it (the joys of Steam) so I took the hint :p.

Hi, you can safely delete your FSX.cfg file and it will be recreated the next time you start up, albeit with everything reset to defaults.

I don't really want to loose a lot of add-on stuff that seems to have made its way into my initial config but I might do that to get a fresh config so I can paste in the last "working" config. Or I might just bite the bullet, buy a bigger SSD and have a dedicated FSX install  . Thanks for the advice ringo747

Just incase you didn't know the development of MS Flight has been canned.

Copying and pasting stuff into cfg files can get messy. You shouldn't lose anything from addons. I have deleted it many times and the only thing you might notice is a few popups with a prompt to allow certain gauges for example. Go for it.

For those about tomorrow evening, get Mumble client installed, log on and listen in about 8pm. Credentials in a post or two above. See what goes on with online flying with ATC.

I heard not that long ago about Flight being canned, was a bit surprised to be honest given the amount of time MS spent developing it. Maybe they might actually work on a new FS now or something similar. Although they axed the dev team/studio that specialized in the FS titles a while back if I remember. I think FSX looks very dated at stock level compared to the competition (although I must admit I've only seem images of the competition) but with addons.... I'm not going to have any time for FSX till the weekend unfortunately but I think I'm going to do a clean install, try and learn the basics then get Mumble installed ;)

Without wanting to go too much off topic, Flight tried to appeal to console and PC gamers alike. The subscription model changed - free product, but pay for the extra planes and scenery. For 'serious simmers', the biggest joke was being able to buy a plane without a cockpit.

All I wanted in Flight was for a 'FSX' revamp. To take advantage of modern CPUs and GPUs, updated airports, flight models, weather cells, navdata etc. I would have happily paid upto £50 for this. We may have this with XPlane10, but my current addons wouldn't be compatible. (Not that I've tried XP10). And we may have this with Prepar3D and with another piece of software, it tricks it into letting addons think it's FSX. This month's PC Pilot said the P3D frame rate was slightly smoother, so that doesn't warrant me splashing out for it. If it was 'a worthwhile upgrade' or FS-XI. Then I'm there!

Yes, you need addons from stock FSX to make it look good, but you still can't fault the default Cessna or Mooney. Where we find FSX is that developers have excelled in giving us the plane detail that people probably didn't realise was possible and PCs have become more powerful to suit this.

Guy's I had been hoping to join you tonight however the Desktop has other ideas. Windows is failing to boot (even into safe mode). Looks like my next few days will involve re-installing windows and FSX. Why does this always happen when you've got it running sweet!!

It's solved. A botched windows update was the culprit. When the system hung my clever little mobo thought it would be a good idea to reset to default. Unfortunately it forgot that doing this reset the sata mode to. After a bit of swearing and imagining the worst I went into the bios found this and set it to ACHI again. All is well.... I think ;-)

I'll see if i can get on tonight. What's the plan?

Did a few circuits the other night at Aldergrove but didn't hang about long.

Does anyone know of any VFR scenery for N.Ireland or is there any being developed? Everything seems to be mainland only.

And as they seem good value at the moment, I bought an SSD drive to host FSX on. Now I've read and read, and know it's not going to improve performance.

After the copying over and the dos symbolic linking, it all worked. It is faster when loading FSX, but not blazingly so.. Which then puts the weakness back on my CPU...

I'm happy with the reshuffle. Maybe EFB is the next thing to go on there.
