Question on the ifly 737

Gah.. that was a terrible approach.

Just as I thought everyone had gone to bed on VATSIM after a turbulent but non-eventful flight, Bel_app came online.

I messed up by hitting a wrong key combo so my 2d panel disappeared and then got flustered and I hit my App button too early, hit a large right hand orbit before a clumsy manual landing.

So my question is, once I hit 'app', it seemed that I then couldn't go back to change my 'hdg'. How would I disable 'app' and then go back to change the other MCP bits?

Would I hit the Toga button?

Hi Blue,

Could you not select heading mode and then change the heading selector? I think if you cycle the FDs on and off it may clear the APP mode.

Hitting TOGA would initiate a go around I believe.

Bluetonic hi,

Thanks for reply, I've ditched the 8400GS card and using inte'ls new 5th core HD 4000 and so far FS2004 itself is running near perfect, some small lag but i'm sure that's just down to on-board graphics...

FSX is a non-starter. I'm getting less than 10fps with scenery at a below average dense airport (in this case EGNT UK2000 scenery).

My next question, how much would a dedicated decent graphics card help things? I am looking at the Saphire 7770 for less than £100 and this sort of fits my budget... will this help frames in FSX? I was under the impression the program is mainly CPU driven.

Additionally is there anyway to make use of the quad-core technology as I am aware FSX only runs on a single core at a time?

I am going to have a trail back through the post's on this helpful thread to see if there are any i5 users out there with decent FSX results. I would like to think the i5 3570k 3.4 is good enough for a FSX setup!

I like that show. I can't quite figure out if I fancy that blonde girl pilot or not.

Maybe we can line up some dusty farm strip practice in the Cessna Caravan?

I'm sure all those places exist in FSX. Possibly.

Is that the tall one mate, or the short Aussie? The tall one is a bit posh for me :p

Yes I agree, let’s do it. I'm sure they are on FSX.

From next week I will be back to normal. Last few weeks have been a bit crazy with moving, friends visiting etc.

Go Nvidia for FSX. I'm running this card. It's excellent.

If you do a quick search under general hardware and FSX as a search term, i5 is a good recommendation. I did paste a link a few pages back to those hardware threads. The members are more than happy to give recommendations.

FSX is CPU driven, but having a superfast bus all around your system is also going to help.

FSX is multicore capable, but you have to set in the config how many cores you have/want fsx to use.

eg

For example, with a quad core, a good value might be 14 because

1111 1111 = 15 = all cores used (a quad core has 8 cores because of hyperthreading)
1111 1110 = 14 = all cores used except the 1st one

Graphics cards will also help, not with frame rates, but with the hi-res, anti-aliasing, pin sharp graphics.

I'm so out of touch with modern hardware. I still look for this logo when buying:

V, the tall one.

The i5-3570K is a sound platform to build an fsx rig around but you need to get a dedicated video card. As !bluetonic! says fsx (as with fs2004) is largely cpu bound so adding a cheapish (£20-30) aftermarket cooler and overclocking to 4.2GHz for example will make an improvement. Traditionally in the past nvidia cards have performed better than their AMD counterparts but not too sure on how the latest generation perform. For around the £100 mark for nvidia cards you may be better off going down the route of second hand and picking up a GTX470/480/570 as the latest generation hasn't been refreshed as of yet. As for the red team, the 2GB 7850 offers by far and away the best bang for buck and also have massive overclocking potential but as mentioned before I'm not too sure whether the latest AMD cards have solved the shader problems of the past?

Cheers for the replies, I am thinking of adding an aftermarket cooler and going to 3.8Ghz which is pretty safe, graphics card is definently on the list, from what you guys say its more visual improvment that FPS.

In that case my system definently is not getting the most out of FSX, as my frames rates even without addons are very poor (sub 20 always).

BlueTonic, when you say set in the config.... is this done within FSX? or elsewhere? I am unfamiliar with quadcore technology... my previous system was a shadow of this one

ok, after researching a bit i've found out its the fsx.cfg file you add JOBSCHEDULER section to do this. I've made the addition but no improvment to performance, although I am checking frame rates over remote desktop until I get home from work to see if any increase.

Going to purchase some more memory and a dedicated card at the end of this month and see how we get on. At the moment my FS2004 setup is looking better than FSX right now. But I suspect this is due to using i5 4000 integrated graphics.

Cheers just gave it a go. I still think its something more significant... I am sitting on the ground at EGNT on the runway with uk2000 scenery only, sliders about 3/4 full and im getting 14FPS, I haven't even begun to add traffic or extended texture addons. My concern is a graphics card is not going to solve this on its own.

Am I missing something or is this game just ridiculously hungry. Do I need more memory? I have 3.70GB usable.

How stressful is this!
