The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

I think Orbx are going to do NI after England/Wales/Scotland. Released next year some time. It's not photo scenery but the next best thing IMHO

Yeah I wasn't on Mumble, was using different machine from normal on VATSIM. Must get it all setup again.

The guy did pass his exam. There is another exam next wednesday at Aldergrove too.

I'm really tempted to sign up for a few mentoring sessions and maybe do a few of the ATC exams. It could be quite rewarding I'd say.

Well I didn't get to Frankfurt, but had a great Saturday afternoon virtually flying with my mother-in-law. Can you believe she likes this stuff too?!

I have two cheapy headsets with mics and port doublers, so we could both listen into ATC. We did three 'missions'. All online with VATSIM.

The first was to take a Cessna 172 VFR from Cotswolds/Kemble to Bristol.
The second was to take the ATR 72 IFR from Bristol to Jersey.
The third was to take the 737-600 IFR from Edinburgh to Shannon.

For the first, Gloucester Approach was online, so we radioed in and requested a basic service. No ATC at Bristol.

For the second, Jersey Tower and Ground were online, so we called in once established for runway 27. Once landed, we were handed over to ground to taxi to our gate.

For the third, Edinburgh tower was online, but no further ATC after that.

It was good and hopefully she picked up a lot of geeky stuff to take away with her. I have a sidewinder joystick and her flying would improve 5 x if I had a yoke; but I haven't thought about purchasing one yet. Any recommendations?

Anyone flying this week?

Will a 3930k make this game run faster? Performance on my machine is...shocking especially flying round London.

Quite possibly, I'm sure other can answer for sure.

But.. London is a difficult area to render. If you have your gfx sliders 'to the max' on everything, things will slow down.

Try to compromise first. Save a 'london.cfg' file and put A.I, clouds, water, airport vehicles etc back down to minimal see what that does.

In FSX, people have a magic FPS number they want to reach, but if your plane flys well in the area you want to fly with the settings you want, then it's all fine.

If you haven't already, BACKUP your current settings and have a look here:

Anyone flying this week?

Sounds like you had fun mate!

You did some great routes

I can fly Thursday only...

Yes, hopefully I can do Thursday with a later finish.

If anyone has been umming about flying online; have got a headset, VATSIM account etc, I'll be about tomorrow evening between 7-30pm - 9.30pm. Join me on Mumble.

Tuesday normally good for me but on babysitting duty tomorrow. If the little one can go down early, I will get on mate.

Hi Guys,

I posted a few weeks ago debating about a system I was thinking about purchasing to run FSX. I've went for an i5 3.4GHz quad core with 4GB of memory 1600MHz, runs perfect.

However something has happened that has frightened me a bit. I've loaded FS2004 just to see how this would perform against my old AMD 64 5000+ setup and to my displeasure the performance increase is minimal! Im struggling to get over 20FPS on a clean install of FS2004 running similar graphics settings to my old setup, clouds in high detail all sliders to max...

Now I should probably mention at this point I am running my old GPU still. Nvidia 8400GS as i havent got round to picking a decent replacement yet, my question is ... surely i should have a performance jump considering the huge gulf between the processing capabilities?

I am running Windows 7 64-Bit now were as previously I was running 32-bit, this is a clean hard drive, with literally just FS2004 installed and nothing else, I am not convinced FSX will perform to any standard given FS2004's performance right now.

I've been out of the loop recently with computer hardware, am I missing anything here? I've got the latest nVidia drivers so I was sort of expecting 40+ frames all the time? When I get home tonight I am going to try connecting my onboard graphics as I am wondering if an Intel series chipset will be better than a 4 year old nVidia card 512mb ?

Any idea's guys, I'm going nuts as I've just spent the best part of £350, I have a feeling you are going to say GPU, but I ran it on my old system and the performance increase is marginal at best!

Hello SOOTY172, well done with the progression and don't fret just yet.

What is your benchmark for performance?! I am running FSX on a 1.1 2006 Mac Pro. 6GB Ram. 2 x 3.0Ghz Xeons, 2 x 5770 and a new SSD. Woot!

We all aspire to a Soyatasic FSX experience but I realise with this system that I'll never have slick performance in London with sliders to max in my iFly, so I have to compromise.

However, I know I can tinker with the sliders for the default Cessna 172 and get excellent performance elsewhere.

I know that sometimes I'll be disappointed with frame rates BUT if I'm flying and everything is smooth to my eye, then it now doesn't bother me much. Could you really, really tell the difference between 40 FPS and 20 FPS when you're trying to manually follow a SID because your FMC is playing up?

So the important thing is to manage your expectations and then put the money in the right areas. Unfortunately for me, it would be a new i5 system.
