The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

It's a really fun plane isn't it. I love that one, nice and straight forwards to learn, but still complex enough to keep it interesting. I'm getting to grips with the 707 now and still working on getting the engine start procedure down! Beautiful plane and fun to fly, but I do miss the modern nav systems a bit (there is a bit of a cheat with the "realtime map" that is basically a gps)

Some new ones with the CS 707. Thanks again to Soya for the recommendation, I'm loving it so far.

poop :p

Well, I finally caved in tonight. I have a Vertex 2E 60GB on its way :). Should be more than enough room for fsx + some good add ons (baring photorealistic scenery!). Next on my list is REX 2 :)

lol, you'll want another soon!

REX: definately the most beneficial addon I've paid for since it is always visible wherever you're flying, and you can make a nearly infinite number of configs to suit your situation. I have a real pretty winter sky going on now :)

I'm sure FSX can use more than 4 cores (assuming the service packs have been applied). But it only uses real real ones, so not the hyperthreading cores we have on our i7s etc.

From what I have read FSX does multicore since SP2 but only certain parts of the coding gets used on the other cores. IMO find the best valued chip and overclock the hell out of it. Best to find your answer here http://www.simforums.com/forums/hardware-software-and-computer-technology_forum29.html they cover nearly all hardware & some software aspect to FSX and if you run down the posts, there is plenty of talk about multicore FSX use.

On a side note: I ordered my new build PC for FSX (& other gaming too) sooner then I thought(found some good deals and wanted it before Xmas). Should hopefully have it towards the end of next week so I can rebuild my FSX on it(starting to miss it big time). Which also means I got to sort out my current hardware as much of it I will not use or need anymore so will be selling it on. I will give more details soon (and probably end up maybe ebaying it) but it is pretty much an entire system suited for FSX & general gaming. You can check out my specs earlier in this thread but I will be putting the ATI HD4870x2 back in the Sugo box and sell the GTX480 (which I bought from ocuk in August) seperate, also included will be a Dell 24'' monitor. Also will be selling most of my flight gear as nowadays I am pretty much 80-90% a stick flyer using my X52. That means the entire Saitek range I have (Yoke, pedals, throttle quadrant, 3x instrument panels(lcd screens), switch panel) plus trackir4, wireless headphones/keyboard & mouse (everything is in mint condition, very anal about hardware treatment & cleaning). So ideally, I think it would suit someone who want to get into flight sim or is already doing it but fancies an upgrade.

Will have more details in the near future but if someone is already interested then send me an email in trust and will be happy to discuss things in more detail.

Cheers.

Well, my vertex has arrived :D Will be transfering FSX over to it tonite. Should leave about 30GB free on my c300. Will install Rex on to the C300 leaving a good 40GB of the vertex for addons :D.

Glad to hear that you will be back up and running soon soya. Whats your new rig spec? Also, what dell 24" is it?

Good luck with your new ssd, I'm sure it will run great with FSX. I would recommend though not to install REX on any of your fast drives, remember that you do not need the entire REX textures set (@9.5Gb inc overdrive) on your fast SSDs. Once you run a chosen REX theme, the textures will automatically replace the original set (which will be the location of your installed FSX). Even your backup procedure in REX (which basically backs up the entire texture set of FSX to a chosen path) should be stored on a slower drive. This should ensure a better use of your fast SSD space.

Should be up and running @15-20th December with some luck. The new rig should arrive towards the end of next week (or early after next weekend) plus I need to reinstall my entire FSX and sort all the tweaks out, that alone takes @week. The new rig is pretty high spec (I thought I may as well splash out for a decent gaming system in general not just for FSX), i7 950 OC 4.2Ghz/2 GTX580s/Asus Sabertooth x58/6Gb DDR3 RAM/240Gb SSD & 2x 2TB Samsungs F4s/NTZX Phantom case. This rig should drive my new Dell 3011 fairly well :).

The previous Dell is a 2405FPW, it has faithfully served me for @4 years and never had a fault or any dead/stuck pixels, hence-why I decided to stick with Dell.

Sexy pants spec, let me know what you think of the phantom as I've been wanting one since they were announced.

Agreed on the REX location, although having it on a faster drive would speed up the installation of new themes (which can be a pain if you like changing your water themes). I just change the sky/cloud textures mainly to avoid the long loading process, but if you have the space to use and like the idea of being able to change themes quickly your original plan may still be worth considering. However, I agree with Soya in that you could probably use the space better for other apps.

My order of FSX Gold was despatched yesterday, so it should either arrive tomorrow or on Monday. I'm planning to install it on my separate WD Black drive. Do you have any tips and recommendations for the FSX novice? Are their addons you would recommend? The last version of Flight Simulator I used was FS2002 :D

I'll be reading through this thread.

That's the best advice, but from my many noobish trials and tribulations I can make a few suggestions:

NL2000v4 scenery: get it. It's free and beautiful.

Captain Sim make some really nice payware planes that I have found to be worth the money.

Don't overtweak your cfg file, start with NickN's setup guide for best initial results and work from there. After months of tweaking I reinstalled and had smoother results than after all my tweaks lol.

Say hello to your gf from time to time :p

I literally got Rex 2.0 this morning. OMG. It adds a complely new level of realism and eyecandy to FSX. Definately get it.

As Devrij said, captain sim aircraft are good, espcially if you want to learn how to fly with all the buttons working! They model pretty much all the aircrfat systems in high detail, so they may look like they cost a few bob, but they are good.

Yeah should be, check this link http://realenvironmentxtreme.com/forum/index.php?board=25.0 once you have latest build (which I'm pretty sure you will have) you may perhaps need to DL overdrive seperate as I think they keeping that as a separate texture package. But you may already have it, will say in the about help menu.

EDIT: Don't forget to set your Texture Max Load at 4096 if you are using HD clouds sets, link here http://realenvironmentxtreme.com/forum/index.php?topic=671.0

PS While I'm sorting out my new build and also sorting out my old system (which I will be selling soon) first on for sale will be my 3 month old ocuk GTX 480. If anyone is interested, or you know anyone interested, feel free to email me in trust. Will give it a while before putting it up for sale in other places.

I've just got a new rig and I fancied pushing it a bit so I've reinstalled FSX.
Any chance we could get a list of must have addons somewhere in here? It would save me reading through the whole thread.
Also preferably with free alternatives if there are any!

Cheers!
