The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Cheers soya. Noticed overdrive was separate but couldn't get on their website this morning so couldn't get it.

Will check the texture max load.

I think I had to patch to the latest version to get OD. You can check which build you have in the "about" section of the rex app and then choose the appropriate patch from the forum before installing OD. Definately worth it. I'm quite enjoying flying the high altitude theme atm with cold front weather. Really pretty. But turbulence theme at night with major storms makes for some very atmospheric stuff in a big jet.

russ0r, the only one I can say is a "must" is the NL2000v4 scenery. It's free so if you have the HDD space and the hardware to get the textures loading fast enough, it's definately a must. It's worth getting REX2.0 as well. Definately cool stuff. After that, get a decent payware plane suited to your style of flying (if you like the complex models, captain sim are a good place to start and are nice on the eyes too).

Yeah should be, check this link http://realenvironmentxtreme.com/forum/index.php?board=25.0 once you have latest build (which I'm pretty sure you will have) you may perhaps need to DL overdrive seperate as I think they keeping that as a separate texture package. But you may already have it, will say in the about help menu.

EDIT: Don't forget to set your Texture Max Load at 4096 if you are using HD clouds sets, link here http://realenvironmentxtreme.com/forum/index.php?topic=671.0

PS While I'm sorting out my new build and also sorting out my old system (which I will be selling soon) first on for sale will be my 3 month old ocuk GTX 480. If anyone is interested, or you know anyone interested, feel free to email me in trust. Will give it a while before putting it up for sale in other places.

What graphics card are you upgrading to? And how is the 480 on FSX? I might be interested, depends how much shipping costs are from America.

I've just got a new rig and I fancied pushing it a bit so I've reinstalled FSX.
Any chance we could get a list of must have addons somewhere in here? It would save me reading through the whole thread.
Also preferably with free alternatives if there are any!

Cheers!

Considering you are reinstalling FSX on a new rig I highly recommend going through this thread as there will be lots of tips/suggestions and links that should help you immensely. If you skip past the pictures posted there are only @6-7 pages to read and nearly all of it would be worth your while reading it. I made this thread specifically to fill it with useful information/ and user feedback/suggestions and experiences so we can all enrich our FS lives.

I'm upgrading to a GTX580, mainly for other games as the GTX 580 won't make any (or very little) difference over my current GTX480 when it comes to FSX. The GTX 480/580 are probably the best cards to run FSX with I would say, closely followed by the high end ATI cards like the latest 6000 series and the older dual GPUs 5970 and 4870x2 (which was the card I used before the GTX480). If you are interested in getting the GTX480 then I would recommend to first check what they cost locally in America either new or 2nd hand. You may find a good deal locally, otherwise, check with local postage or courier and ask how much it would cost to send a package from your location to Jersey UK, that should give you a good idea on postage. If you are still interested then send me an email in trust and we can take it from there, but in all honesty, it will probably be cheaper buying it from America, especially now that the dollar is stronger against the pound.

Hi.

I have just installed some of the NL2000 stuff and I must say it looks fantastic. However my FPS have fallen off a cliff and it is virtually unplayable. Any tips to get a more constant FPS with this scenery? I have a Q6600, HD48701GB, 8GB RAM. I get playable FPS with almost everything else Ive had so if anyone has any guidance with settings in particular it would be appreciated. Cheers.

Are you running that Q6600 at stock?

I just found this over at AVSIM http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html released a few days ago, its a free tool that analyses your config file and based on your hardware can modify your settings automatically to improve performance. This has worked wonders for me.

Great find, have been keeping a very close eye on this thread as i have just started getting back into FSX, some great tips throughout this thread and still lots of tweaking for me to do to hopefully reach Soya's level of quality :D

3ghz mate. Ive got decent fps now having used that tool I previously linked.

I can't get over how good that NL2000 stuff looks considering its free. Like others on here, Im just getting back into FSX. Ive had it since launch and haven't touched it for a good year or so. Ive seen plenty of freeware bits for FSX in the past and its luck of the draw whether its any good or not. Sometimes you find a gem but more often than not the free stuff just looks ropey. This NL2000 is better than a lot of the pay stuff out there. Fantastic stuff.

There are many excellent freeware pieces out there but please do not forget that even though it is indeed free, some of it (like the NL2000s scenery) does accept voluntary donations. These people who spend their free time making this stuff do have to pay for things like server cost/hosting etc not to mention how much time and effort they have put in bringing the freeware stuff onto your PC. Donations are purely optional and it is up-to the users discretion whether they wish to donate or not and how much. The FS community wouldn't be what it is today without countless of individuals & groups creating a HUGE pools of freeware stuff for the user base. Most do not ask or need any payment, they just enjoy spending their time to create something they wish to share with the community but some do have running cost or hoping to make their creations a viable financial option in order to continue spending their time to make more addons.

I personally have donated several times to different freeware groups/individuals that have asked for voluntary donations for the simple reason that I have used and enjoyed their software (which is why I have already donated 50 Euros to the NL2000 team, worth every penny IMO). I feel my donations are helping the continuation of what most of take for granted, freeware software, whether it is from the FS world or elsewhere.

With regards to that tool Bojote made, it's definately a good starting point and very useful for error checking your cfg file, but it's meant to get you to a ballpark area. Obviously he can't tweak it to every setup out there so do see how it runs with some of the tweaks removed (eg fibre frame time fraction, after I touted it so highly, I've found to be hit and miss with frames unlimited).

I blame the NL2000 team for getting me addicted to FSX as I spent so much time tweaking to get it right lol, I certainly owe them something!

Have put a few random photos up here, some pics from Wales and a few of Bristol:

Looks nice, love that shot over temple meads station. If I had 22GB on my SSD I would defo spend £22 on the south england and south wales pack. Time to get a dedicated FSX SSD I think :(

I tried the FSX.CFG file and it said that my file was already fine. One thing I noticed though was that it didn't add a SHADER_CACHE_VERSION line to the cfg file. This is needed for the Shader Model Fix.

Hello, Great thread here and so thought I would add a couple I just took flying out from Melbourne heading for Tasmania on my B17 "Joker" from A2A simulations. I cannot recommend their stuff enough. I use FEX 2, VFR for England, UTX europe. FEX really is a must have in my opinion. Thanks, Fred

Had a hairy short hop from LAX to SF in a "major thunderstorm", was the most fun I'd had in FSX for a while: landing in a busy airport, at night, in a storm in a AP that takes ages to stop. Was also surprised how nice the default airport looked, hadn't landed there before.

Tense!

Relief :)
