The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Are Lockheed Martin actually putting a lot of work into it? Are they supposed to be releasing a more end user version? I bought the $50 "Academic" license, not spent much time on it though.

Would be nice if there was a real alternative to FS X (64bit, graphics card processing offloading etc) and it's 6 years of growing long in the teeth. X-Plane is pretty decent, but it's nowhere near as end user friendly.

v2 is meant to be a big update. In terms of "end user version" not sure if that's going to be the current Academic version or they building another one. One thing I heard/read is that if you have the Academic one you need to buy V2.

Just looking at some online flight plan it has the following for egkk to eham: CLN L620 REDFA/0034

Where would they go in the FMC? I'm just little confused here.

So I have this route here.

CLN L620 REDFA

So you start with RTE and type in EGKK and then EHAM click next page.

You have Via and To. You add CLN on then right side(To) on the left side it will say Direct(Via). Below that(Via) you type L620, opposite side(To) you type REDFA you then click activate and EXEC.

Once that is done click DEP/ARR, Left side click DEP EGKK and choose CLN2X(that's the SID) they are different depending what rwy is in use. We using rwy26L.

Once you added that, again press Activate and EXEC. Go to your legs page and you should now see some added waypoints which make up your SID e'g KKW04 KKN06 etc.

Click back on DEP/ARR and click EHAM ARR. Let's say rwy18C is in use, choose ILS18C, on the left side is all the STARS for rwy18C, we going to choose REDF1A, that STAR has a Trans which is SUGOL, click that.

Then again click Activate and the EXEC. If you get any route disconnects click the way-point below it and then click the disconnect this will join the route up.

you must always click EXEC after you have corrected the disconnects.

If I have confused you any more. I can go through it with you on mumble I don't mind. :)

Edit. I forgot on the RTE page you will also have to add rwy number. 26L

Software like Aivlasoft EFB, you plan all your routes first then save that file and when you click the RTE button on then FMC you add the route you saved e.g, EGKKEHAM01.RTE . You dont have to add each Via or To

I then click on my DEP/ARR and add the SIDS and STARS after.

As I said I don't mind going through it on mumble. I'm around tonight. I know Blue offered to give some lessons tomorrow. He is the real pro!! :p

Thanks! That helped greatly.

I'm just wondering, how do you know which runway is in use at the other airport? And what if ATC gives you a different one to that which you've inputted? Sorry if these are stupid questions to ask.

You'd tune into ATIS to know what runway is currently in use at the destination airport.

When in communications with ATC, e.g on VATSIM, they'd also let you know runway in use and what STAR to expect.

If you've already inputted, you can goto 'dep/arr' in the FMC and select the new
runway and STAR.

You'd then go to 'legs' and you should find a route inconsistency/continuity error. So look at your current waypoint and click on the STAR starting point, and map that over your current STAR or just to the next waypoint in the FMC.

Alternatively, ask ATC for vectors to the runway.

Thanks for the help! I think I've finally got the hang of the FMC. Now onto actually flying the thing!

How do you actually trim the plane for takeoff and how do you turn the autopilot on? I've skimmed through the manual but it just leaves me more confused.

+5/5.5 trim for takeoff is a good ballpark figure on the pmdg. If you go through the fms setup properly then it should work out the exact figure you need.

for autopilot, you should have the flight director on before takeoff and and necessary channels activated before you turn the autopilot master on. To keep it brief, try takeoff > heading select button > lvl change button > cmd A/B button. That should set you up on autopilot on whatever heading is selected, climbing to whatever is in the altitude box. Once it is near the desired altitude then it should level off by itself

One thing to mention is that the strip of autopilot buttons at the top of the panel is only "what you want it to do", which may not quite agree with "what it is actually doing". The latter is displayed at the top of your primary screen with green being engaged and white being armed (ie, if you select vor/loc to do a localiser approach, "then vor/loc" will initially appear white on your primary display, once it finds the localiser and subsequently turns onto it then "vor/loc" goes green)

In FSX, I never used to pay attention to trimming. But when I learnt how to do it properly in the default Cessna, then it made more sense for the 737. In the default planes, AP works regardless.

When you're plane is properly trimmed, e.g. no pressure/ no touchytouchy on the yoke and positive climb, then you should be able to engage AP from thingemajib's excellent pointers.

AND... pilot > comptuer in a Boeing, so if you have AP on and subsequently move the yoke, AP will disengage and give control back to you.

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated. I'll give it a try later. Hopefully I can complete my first flight. Frustrating being stuck on the ground.

Another 2hr flight, 10mins from landing. I click on OpusFsx and another crash. Might request my money back, that's 3 in 2 day's.

REX currently doing a beta on their next update. Read the small print.

Another free upgrade?!

There's always a lot to take in when flying these complex airliners, but keep practising. And a lot of the action comes at once; Rotate, positive climb, gear up, flaps incrementally up, AP engage.

You could always practice a few circuits with the plane using alt, vs, hdg and capturing the localiser..

And one of the cool features Chaders showed V and me was to 'step through' your flight plan using EFIS mode 'Pln' (Rotator that selects app, vor, map, pln) and going to the 'Legs' page of the FMC. This may be a better visual aid for the flight plan.

This must make you a beta tester for the product.. :o

The uiautomationcore.dll problem has appeared before now in this very thread. If FSX is consistently crashing it's always worth while looking at the WIndow's Event Viewer to see what actual module was crashing and then to Google it.
