The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Was on vatsim with Bluetonic and vuvuzela last night, picked up so much stuff my head was spinning.

Was really good to get some help and advice, learnt about the radio stack, AP and ATC speech stuff and much much more, was really good.

Thanks guys

You're welcome :)

We had a good flight session last night.

An introduction to the basics, a quick flight at Guernsey and there's plenty more to learn where that came from.

Looking forward to it mate, I am gonna work on remembering what to say to the ATC as that was the hardest part for me, gonna take a while to remember it all but I will get there :D

Also just setting up the aircraft correctly before take off was good, cant beleive there is so much I didnt know

When setting the aircraft up, there's plenty of Cessna 172 checklists available online, on Android and there's a good one through Transair..

Print a couple off this morning already :D

I also installed service pack 2 as well (at last lol), will try and get plan G to connect to FSX tonight.

New Joystick

Hi All, I'm a noob to the forum and have been away from FSX for a couple of years now, but I'm looking to get it all back up and running again and was looking for suggestions for a new Joystick. currently have a Saitek Cyborg Evo Force, although I remember having issues with the force feedback juddering when taxiing.
Desk space is a bit limited so don't have room for the full yoke pedals etc. Any ideas welcome though.
TIA
Brian

Hi Brian, and welcome.

I recently got into FSX and bought the Logitec 3d Extreme pro after it got recommended on here, have to say I am more than happy with it, nice piece of kit. I suppose it really depends how much you want to spend :)

Thanks for the welcome and advice :) Money's not that much of an issue I'd rather spend the money once if you know what I mean, however I'm not looking to break the bank either.

Hello Brian!

I have a MS Forcefeedback2 joystick. But you can't buy them new anymore.

When you've got everything up and running, come fly with us!

Thanks Bluetonic,

I did join vatsim a couple of years ago as a Pilot and then bottled it and never went any further!! I've just checked my membership and it's still valid so once I'm back up and running you may regret the invite :)

hehe I felt like that mate, Blue and Vuv took my for my first spin on Vatsim last night, was great fun. Thankfully we didnt have to deal with ATC :D:D

Do you have rudder pedals mate?

No I've not got pedals have been thinking about them though.
I should have put the full spec in the first post really

Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P
QuadCore Intel Core i5-2500, 3500 MHz
8 GB DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM
Nvidia 660 GTX 2048mb
2 x ATA OCZ-VERTEX4 256gb SCSI Disk Device (C: & D:)

Guess I'm just going to have to grow a pair and get on with it then. I just don't want to annoy the ATC's because I don't know what I'm doing, but having read through some of the posts on here it seems like A, they're used to it and B, they're happy to help out the noobs anyway.

It appears I'm a little behind when it comes to updating my REX. I currently have REX 2 Extreme and have found links on the forums to update. First I need to update to Overdrive then I can go to essentials/overdrive. The problem is the one link that works on the REX site to download Overdrive is so slow. It's only 3.5gb filesize but will take days at the speed the server will let me download at. Does anyone know any other sites to download REX updates from?

It does mention torrents but I've not dabbled with torrent software yet. Is it worth going that route? if so can anyone recommend decent torrent software that comes with no bloatware attached to it.

Unsure what Overdrive and Essentials will give me but it seems many really like the update so I'm hoping my visuals will be even better than they already are.

Cheers
Paul

P.S. I too am trying to get the balls to get on vatsim. I used to fly with Deer Valley Flying club many years ago and a few guys on there were helpful with the ATC talk but I struggle to absorb what they say quickly enough. I'm more a VFR flyer too but flying with others is always more fun. I believe I do have a vatsim login, I'll have to try and dig out the details. I also need a new headset, though the mic on my webcam is pretty decent so there really isn't anything stopping me now.

Legal torrents are a good way to download large files. You can start and resume the download at anytime and it should in theory be quicker than downloading 1 large file that could corrupt.

Have a look here for OCUK suggestions on software:-

Overdrive is the additional HD textures for anything like runway concrete, grass, clouds, sunsets etc. You can build your own theme or download preset ones.

The Essentials bit gives you standard setup of textures with the weather engine.

1. Get a new headset.
2. Go on Vatsim.

Me and Vuvuzela are more than happy to help out anyone that wants to fly online with Vatsim whatever standard you are. If you want to do the OCUK flyin with us, you just need to listen and repeat what we say.. :p

Il setup uTorrent and guess what?! I have BT infinity and I believe BT block all torrent stuff.....Not impressed. My own fault for signing up to BT. My contract is up in May so I'll look at changing then. Shame as I get a decent speed on fibre with them too.

Ignore my last post. I logged back into flightsimstore and can now download Rex Essentials plus from them. This doesn't appear to come with overdrive however so I'll have to read whether the Overdrive is still a free update for Rex Essential plus owners.

I realise now, after a little more reading, that is only certain torrent sites that are blocked and not the legit stuff. I think it is purely because REX 2.0 isn't supported anymore that I am having probs getting the update.
