The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Thanks guys, appreciate it!

I am using the REX Natural ENB but I have edited some of them.

Here are some shots of my landing into Orbx CZST Stewart airport:

We do indeed. I think we doing some flying this weekend hopefully. Once you all setup let us know and we can arrange something.

Hooray.. Another victim , I mean pilot.. :o

Flying is a bit ad-hoc at the moment.

I can't do this Thursday as advertised. I'm out for a work curry. mmmm.

I can do this Saturday at somepoint in the evening.

And then the following weekend. And probably sometime in-between.

This looked a good route:-

The outbound looks great! I'm up for this.

Im hoping to have everything installed by the end of next week so there is no rush for me. Just going through a list of add-ons to buy.

So far I have

ORBX UK
A2A Cessna
Active Sky Next

Do you guys fly any regular routes? i`m trying to decide which airports to upgrade!

MrRoper, I'm glad to read that things are coming together for you.

There's no set routes we fly, but I'm always twisting Vuvzela's arm to fly at airports that are not Heathrow or Gatwick and that I also have scenery for.

Therefore my favourite routes are:

Bristol - Edinburgh
Glasgow to Cardiff
Cork - Bristol
Aldergrove - East Midlands
London City - Bristol
Dublin - Bristol

FSX is a real pain in the ass sometimes!

I was flying perfectly yesterday, wanted to do a flight this morning and now every time I try launch, fsx crashers grrrrrrr!!!!!:mad::mad:

So rebuilding again.

We fly mainly UK(when we fly as a group) so yes go for the UK addons.

Orbx UK is great. I would get some of the UK2000 airports

A2A is fantastic.

Download Plan G too, great for VFR flying.

I hate rebuilding machines for FSX, its such a long drawn out process installing everything, Im going to try and keep the installation a bit more streamlined this time.

I will get ORBX installed and then make a decision on what airports to get. I mainly flew the big stuff when I last had it all up and running and would like to take part in a few more VFR flights this time.

I will also get PLAN-G (I have been watching a few videos of it and it looks awesome, I cant believe its free!)

Hope to see you all soon!

A quick question before I commit to buying things,

Do any of you rate the GEN X scenery highly? I quite like the idea of having scenery I can navigate by but im not sure if the lack of autogen will annoy me.

I've used VFR scenery from just flight for ages and if you view it at the right angle, it looks superb. And it is great being able to fly VFR with real aviation maps.

Someone posted about Aerosoft (I think) having software that maps Autogen onto PhotoGen scenery. I can't remember who it was.

I have just bought the full UK ORBX and will use that for a bit and see how I get on.

IS FTX Global worth the money? its 50 quid which seems a bit steep

I would say if you are flying out of the UK then get it. I do, so its worth for me. It does really make a difference compared to the standard FSX textures.

I'm having issues with REX, done the install and all the updates but I cant see any options in the textures tab? Looked on-line and cant seen to find a straight forward fix!!

Cheers, I will probably buy it then as I will be doing plenty of trips out of the uk.

Don't tell me that about REX, I have just bought that also!! Hoping to use it just for textures as I will be looking at using the new Active Sky Next for Weather. It seems they have solved a lot of the issues that used to annoy me with earlier versions.

For anyone having FSX crashing problems; sometime the easiest solution is to back up first the essential config files, all the files in the fsx.cfg directory & scenery.cfg (that's all the main ones covered I think that are installed via a vanilla FSX install). Then enter your FSX discs and choose repair function on your FSX install. With some luck it should solve the problem and get you up and running again on vanilla FSX, if that works all you need to do now is to copy back the files you backed up and hopefully everything will work. Although the problem could possible come from one of the cfg files, like FSX.CFG (unlikely) or scenery.cfg (I have had problems originating from corrupted scenery entries in the past) and there is also a file with an XML extension (can't remember full name offhand) that can cause problems.

In my experience the best way to keep FSX up and running is as follows:
1) Install vanilla FSX on a designated HD (SSD) with at least @200-250GB space.
2) Install REX on a seperate HD (SSD) as well as ALL scenery and airports (depending on how many addons you have I suggest at least 1TB+)
3) All other addons like aircraft should be installed on the same HD (SSD) as FSX, especially if you tweak them or add liveries.
4) Once you have it all up and running the way you want it, backup the entire FSX HD (SSD) (even with my bloated install of tons of aircraft, it takes up @250GB) to another HD. Also backup all files where the fsx.cfg and scenery.cfg files are.
5) When adding more addons to FSX or tweaking it, make sure most common things you use in FSX still work properly but mainly that it still runs ok.
6) If FSX starts crashing, first start looking at the files in the fsx.cfg & scenery.cfg directories, rename the current file and then copy the original backup into the directory and see if it runs. If all those files don't seem to cause the problem, then either 1) remove the current FSX install drive and retrieve from backup 2) if you added many addons and/or done much tweaking since your last backup, save your current FSX install to another location, remove and retrieve the backup. It should run ok, then copy your recent addons/tweaks back over from your newly made backup and check FSX after you do each one.

In the end, you need to learn yourself what the easiest and most time saving way is to safeguard your FSX install.

Hope this helps.
