The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

For anyone having FSX crashing problems; sometime the easiest solution is to back up first the essential config files, all the files in the fsx.cfg directory & scenery.cfg (that's all the main ones covered I think that are installed via a vanilla FSX install). Then enter your FSX discs and choose repair function on your FSX install. With some luck it should solve the problem and get you up and running again on vanilla FSX, if that works all you need to do now is to copy back the files you backed up and hopefully everything will work. Although the problem could possible come from one of the cfg files, like FSX.CFG (unlikely) or scenery.cfg (I have had problems originating from corrupted scenery entries in the past) and there is also a file with an XML extension (can't remember full name offhand) that can cause problems.

In my experience the best way to keep FSX up and running is as follows:
1) Install vanilla FSX on a designated HD (SSD) with at least @200-250GB space.
2) Install REX on a seperate HD (SSD) as well as ALL scenery and airports (depending on how many addons you have I suggest at least 1TB+)
3) All other addons like aircraft should be installed on the same HD (SSD) as FSX, especially if you tweak them or add liveries.
4) Once you have it all up and running the way you want it, backup the entire FSX HD (SSD) (even with my bloated install of tons of aircraft, it takes up @250GB) to another HD. Also backup all files where the fsx.cfg and scenery.cfg files are.
5) When adding more addons to FSX or tweaking it, make sure most common things you use in FSX still work properly but mainly that it still runs ok.
6) If FSX starts crashing, first start looking at the files in the fsx.cfg & scenery.cfg directories, rename the current file and then copy the original backup into the directory and see if it runs. If all those files don't seem to cause the problem, then either 1) remove the current FSX install drive and retrieve from backup 2) if you added many addons and/or done much tweaking since your last backup, save your current FSX install to another location, remove and retrieve the backup. It should run ok, then copy your recent addons/tweaks back over from your newly made backup and check FSX after you do each one.

In the end, you need to learn yourself what the easiest and most time saving way is to safeguard your FSX install.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for this Soya. I did do a lot of what you said above and still I was having issues. What annoys me the most is that I was flying fine and fsx has been running great and then all of a sudden I get issues. Very strange.

Thanks again.

Cheers, I will probably buy it then as I will be doing plenty of trips out of the uk.

Don't tell me that about REX, I have just bought that also!! Hoping to use it just for textures as I will be looking at using the new Active Sky Next for Weather. It seems they have solved a lot of the issues that used to annoy me with earlier versions.

I've sorted it now. Rex is great(for textures)so dont let my little rant put you off ;)

Also for FSX crashing from a Windows perspective, don't forget to look in the 'Event Viewer' which show where the issues are and what .dll/s are involved.

Also that Windows updates can spoil a working FSX system, so create a system restore point when things are good and then refer to that when things go bad.

I can't remember its name but, along with the Soya's recommendations, it's worth renaming the pilot log file. A corrupt one of those stops FSX launching.

So I fell at the first hurdle :( Looks like my FSX discs have gone walkies so I will have to buy it again!

I cant believe you cannot buy a digital download anywhere which means I will have to wait for delivery now, and I was hoping to get most of it installed this weekend.

on a positive note, I have ordered the q400 dash and dug out my PMDG installers so should have a nice suite of aircraft to play with :)

Its closed now, so cant be bought from GFWL anymore :( ordered it for 11 quid from Amazon but will have to wait.

A pity as I wanted to do some flying over the holiday but it is what it is!

Just thought I'd mention that having now got all my FSX working again I started to get a FSX crash on exiting the program again, citing ai_player.dll as the reason. The error would only appear if the UK2000 Gatwick X scenery was loaded, so if I start the program and take off from say Cardiff and then end program I didn't get the error, but fly from Biggin Hill and exit I would get the crash.
After trawling around I found that UK2000 Gatwick Extreme may be the issue and to resolve it I've moved the scenery to the top of priority list and now the error has gone away :)

I downloaded my copy of fsx gold from gfwl two weeks ago, but I think its shutting down at some point im not sure if you can burn the game to dvds.

This reminded me, I tried to capture the download files but failed. Also my download refused to install the SDK even though it tried. I can see why GFWL is closing down as there seemed to be no way of getting help or support on this. Really was a disappointing experience except for the price.

Right,

That is vols 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8 of VFR Generation X re-installed and have also put on Revolution X too.

Next step tomorrow is a VFR round-robin to cover what I will be doing in driving over the festive period.

Take off from Bodmin (they closed the airport here in Plymouth a few years back, so that's closest place to start) and head to Liverpool. From there it's down to the Big Smoke (not sure where yet, Heathrow is closest to where I will be going but can you see a Cesna landing there) and then finally back to Bodmin.

Am tempted to put in a stop off at Bristol to transfer into a slightly larger plane.

Will grab some pics along the way too

Blimey, the textures are quick to install.

So does REX 4 replace REX 3 or is it an addition to REX 3? In other words, does it share the same texture sets as REX 3 plus new textures or just new textures not including the REX 3 textures, meaning you won't have access to the REX 3 textures anymore unless you use REX 3 again?

It is somewhat confusion from what I am reading.

That is it...I give up with FSX.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Am getting CTD, fatal errors and general dislike for everything at the monent.

Am not going through the hassle of completely re-installing from scratch as last time i tried that I ended up having to rebuild my entire computer.

Really frustrates me and annoys me as have spent a bloody fortune on add-ons and now they are next to useless.

After I have calmed down from my rage, may give Prepar3d v2 a go and hope that some of the add-ons I have spent my hard earned on can be used in that.
