The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

I still think I have issues with REX essentials and turbulence. Yesterday I did a flight from EGKK-LIBD in the Majestic Dash 8. As I passed through clouds the Dash 8 was bouncing all over the place. I quickly swapped to my Lancair Legacy (Aerosoft) and it flew on nice and smooth? I have my settings as per REX's instructions in FSX and the Dash 8 gets bounced around so why do none of my other aircraft experience turbulence effects?

The Dash 8 has a working weather radar, it isn't something to do with that is it?

REX stipulate to turn off allowing FSX to handle turbulence but to me at the moment REX isn't doing that good a job either. Anyone have any suggestions?

Roll on the shared cockpit.. then we can do this flight together..

I was on Vatsim last night for a Dash-8 flight from London City to Isle of Man. City ground was online along with London Control. It all went rather well.

Here was my route:
EGLC (BPK5T) BPK N601 LESTA P6 RODOL L28 PENIL L10 KELLY EGNS

My route was :

BOGNA UN615 BENBO N615 XAMAB UL612 SRN UL153 PAR UZ904 VALEN UM730 ANC UL612 VIE/0228

I can't remember the SIDS and STARS I used. I had flown this route in the PMDG T7 a few days prior and I'm sure I chose the same approach into LIBD however in the Dash 8 it plotted differently. It is quite a long flight in the Dash 8. I'm still yet to buy myself a headset and get the balls to go on vatsim. I know it'll all go horribly wrong when I do.

Is the shared cockpit going to be available for all?

The shared cockpit is in the Pro version. There should be an upgrade cost when it's released.

And stop procrastinating, get a headset and Vatsim account and we can get you online and proficient before Xmas. :D

Hey guys, I'm looking to get back into FSX as I've now got a new build.

Can anyone recommend any good free mods that update scenery and overall graphics.

I've upgraded to an i7 5820k from an i7 920, hopefully this will give me a nice boost in performance.

Cheers

Well done on your new build and a very good decision in getting back into FSX.

Read Kosta's FSX guide for improving FSX performance.

If you've got an NVidia card, follow the many online guides on setting up NVidia Inspector for use with FSX. If you haven't... hmmmm...

Also, before you make do anything, maybe, just maybe you should immediately switch to Prepar3d, rather than spend blood, sweat and tears into making FSX good. Prepar3d has recently got support from PMDG, which is big news.

If you want to continue to make FSX good, I would spend money on:

REX Direct Textures
A weather engine such as Opus, Active Sky Next or wait for Rex Weather Direct
ORBX scenery if you're not interested in Visual Flight Rules flying
Photo scenery if you're interested in VFR.
Any decent payware planes..

As for the free stuff, you can get textures and other bits and bobs, but I've not experience of them.

A2A Wings of Power P51-D (with Accusim - the only way to fly imho), Orbx Worldwide scenery. All sliders maxed out:

From my understanding there is no difference between the Academic and Professional Licenses except the Academic Watermark that gets displayed in the Academic version. The real issue is which license(s) you qualify for. I bet a significant proportion of Academic License holders don't actually qualify for that license and know it ;)

I have a couple of questions I thought I'd ask here, if I may.

Firstly, I installed an SSD (Crucial 120GB, so decent but not outstanding) over the summer and I have c. 31 GB spare. Is it worth using this space for FSX and REX? Could I mix it up, and have either FSX on the SSD with REX on my HDD or vice versa?

Also, I purchased a second hand Saitek x52 Pro a couple of years ago which I've been using since, however it arrived with a couple of the buttons non-functional. Is anyone aware of where I can have this fixed? I've googled but the Saitek site is unhelpful. I culd attempt a youtube DIY, but just about anything could be wrong with the buttons so there's no guarantee.

Cheers.

Yes, put FSX on the SSD and REX on the HDD. REX only copies textures across to FSX when you tell it to, therefore there's no gain having REX on the SSD.

You're probably better off getting a new joystick. The time and money spend faffing would be better spent on new kit.

It it's USB, you can use the setting in FSX or the registered version of FSUIPC to map plane buttons to the working joystick buttons.

Great to know, thanks.

It's not such a huge issue for FSX really, I've had it working quite nicely for FSX in the past. Unfortunately, as the main trigger doesn't work it's a bit of a pain for ARMA 3 etc. New kit isn't a possibility as I'm a student! :(
