The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

As I've been doing a fair bit of what I class more real world flying recently I decided to kick back a little and take a look for a few nostalgic freeware aircraft. I found a rather nice DH Mosquito and Hawker Hunter trainer and single seat version. I've no pics of the Hawker yet but here are a few I took whilst messing around in the Mosquito earlier. It does feel quite unstable / loose to fly after flying heavies mostly recently

That Mosquito looks good - though a bit snub nosed. I'm not sure they got the angle of the nose or the bomb aimers 'bubble' right.

If you want to understand what it feels like to fly as the navigator/bomb aimer (as opposed to the pilot) in a Mossie then look out for the book "Terror in the Starboard Seat" by Dave McIntosh. It's a great read.

Looking at pics you could well be right, bit hard to tell from my screenshots due to the angle. It looks pretty and sounds great and that's the main thing. I can't knock it, the most I've ever done is some re-painting for aircraft back in the FS2004 days. Thanks for the heads up on the book though, I'll add it to my list as I don't think that is one I have read yet. Being 6'3" I imagine it'd be bloody cramped to fly as a bomb aimer!

Happy New Year to you too Blue and everyone else. I'm with you on the hope of 64bit FS goodness - that and the new sim being able to use all of my payware addons but I think that may be asking a little too much?

Hey guys, i got the steam version in the Christmas sale. can you recommend any "must have" free ad dons to start with? Don't fancy splashing out £40 on extra planes straight away

Steam version runs waaaaaaaaaaaay better than stock normal boxed vision did, ati card 6970, still get some stutter but framerate is high (over 60) any ideas on how to fix that ?

Oh renamed steam versions folder, copied old version into its place, renamed it fsx, then copied the steam version files on top of that with overwrite all.... that seems to have put my dads mods in :D

Just one shot from a short flight I just finished. Kansai - Tokyo in a pretty decent freeware A300. Messed up the ILS and had to land manually though because I wasn't familiar with the nav stack in this aircraft. The Steam edition (which I paid £9.99 for and then saw it was down to £2 odd a few hours later - Doh!) seems a lot more stable than before.

I'm tempted to try the DX10 fixer - do many people here use that? Does everything work?

EDIT: I tried one of the shader releases out last night and whilst it did improve smoothness and some visual effects, it made some of my World of AI planes white. I'm guessing that's because they're not DX10 models/textures? I'll stick with DX9 for now then, it's perfectly smooth enough for me.

Just a heads up chaps that someone else posted this out in a thread on this forum. ORBX have Iceland scenery up for free for the entire country. Head on over to https://fullterrain.com/product/ftxgiceland

I'll be buzzing around here later enjoying the views hopefully.
I got all excited there but isn't this the demo they released over a year ago or has it been updated? Always nice to have a reminder for newer peeps ;)

Picnic, no this isn't reading on the site. Whilst it may have just been a demo area it is now a demo country! Those who have ORBX global are to download one version and those who don't another version so please be aware of that.

Rob I have Orbx Global and ORBX England and I agree it is great. I also like the updated airports that come with it albeit they are only basic / simple modifications they are still better than default. The only thing I did do was reduce the amount of autogen as ORBX massively boosts it when set to dense and my setup did struggle in a few areas.

Sad news.

However, it'd be interesting to see the statistics behind their argument that the addon market is declining because Microsoft left the flight sim market... I mean, surely people don't just stop playing flight simulators because there isn't going to be an FSXI? Surely there will always be a steady market using whichever simulator was best?

Aerosoft for example are making more and more addons for X-Plane.

That is sad to hear. I have their Guernsey and Isle of Man scenery and they are excellent products.

I bought both products in their sales and now feel terrible... :(

I can see their argument. Unless you're a big player or a hobbiest developer, you're unlikely to make a decent living in the add on market but now FSX is on Steam, they should have held out a little longer.

Had a hunch that all has not been well for ES for a while now, theres been absolutely no more news about further photo/autogenesis areas since the first release and there was a very disappointing sounding remark from them on their forums about how in a previous sale (summer?) the older horizons vfr scenery outsold their new product by something like 3 to 1.

Personally I think they should have started the photo/autogenesis product with a different and more popular area. Only having the NW tip of Scotland with only two airfields in its coverage area was a bit like having a really expensive demo of what the full product could have eventually become.

Still, sad news :(
