The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

It's not 'install and play' to be honest. Installing SP2 is the first thing that must be done, then there are any amount of fsx.cfg tweaks.

You can enjoy the default aircraft and scenery but to get screenshots like Soya you will need plenty of addons.

As I thought.

Its mostly free stuff though right

Excellent pictures and very useful information.

I'm running FSX with the following:-

Mac Pro 1.1
2 x 3Ghz Xeon
6 GB RAM
Windows 7 64 bit

REX 2.0 with Overdrive
UK Scenery airport for Bristol and Edinburgh
Traffic X
VFR London Scenery
VFR Scenery South West and Wales
International Fighters
Flying School 2011
2 x ATI 5700 (normally used with FSX using ATI eXtension)
MS Forcefeedback Sidewinder 2 joystick.

and best of all - a 3 monitor setup. Either on a virtual cockpit across 3 screens or 1 virtual cockpit, 1 outside view and 1 for GPS, Throttle etc..

The best piece of information ever given to me on a forum that one scenery config won't suit all scenarios.. (unless you have a top-spec FSX recommended PC). Therefore I tend to fly different parts of the UK with different scenery configs. This makes my experience good and enjoyable..

I have recently bought the FSX Real Pilot training book and now looking to increase my knowledge of real world flying using FSX as a learning aid.

I'm also off to this:-

Anyone else going?

I'm now waiting for 'Riot Scenery' for London and maybe buy a Police Chopper.

PMDG have single-handedly killed every other aircraft addon that has any aims of fidelity. Its absolutly stunning. I knew it would be after seeing all the reviews etc. I have all the other PMDG stuff apart from teh MD 11 so I knew what to expect but this is seriously nice. I had a quick fly around LEPA last night and I love the Hugs :D

If you want to just fire it up and fly around then things like the Level-D 767 and captain sim 757 or even the iFly 737 are now looking like toys.......

The ONLY aircraft for anyone who even thinks there a serious simmer is the PMDG 737 NG lol. Looking forward to there 777 now :D VATSIM is going to be flooded with B738's. I reackon PMDG will probably sell more copies of the virtual 737NG then Boeing will of the real thing!

Bottom line, If you are a simulation enthusiast and not just a casual flyer then this is the only plane to fly.

Well said - I have just been flicking through the first introductory manual to refresh my memory on many of the NG quirks. This is truely an amazing addon, it can be picked up quickly by a non-serious simmer who doesn't want to read much but if you are willing to learn an aircraft in detail then this is the one. Amazing stuff.

I'm really tempted to buy all the PMDG printed manuals but it's pretty pricey at £200!

I'll be getting the manuals but not right now lol. £200 is a lot. That's one of the advantages of having the 2 x 24" Dells :D FSX on one and the manual on the other :D

But I'm thinking I fancy 2 of the Saitek Radio modules and the Multifunction module first as that way I can set the nav radios a lot easier and do all the autopilot stuff as well..

Then maybe get the Saitek Pro yoke and quadrant to replace my MS force feeedback pro 2 and the pro rudder pedals........ etc etc

The hardware is more use than a printed manual at the moment :D

Yes I agree with you there. Being able to set radios and MCP would save so much hassle. I know a few folks have the VRInsight panels but I don't think they look so realistic. If I ever get rich I'd definitely intend to build a nice NGX home cockpit.

I looked again at the Boeing manuals but not sure how much use they would be. I don't have the time to sim that often and they'd probably just end up looking nice on my bookcase. FCOM v2 would be interesting to get a proper understanding of the systems.

Do you use TOPCAT for dispatch paperwork? It's worth a look.

The same crowd are also releasing a proper flight dispatch program.

Edit: Dashik - did you have any issues with the NGX panels freezing? I installed a hotfix earlier and since then I have noticed this issue. The hotfix was meant to fix the issues.

There is a crowd call VR Insight that make hardware modules that I think compare well with the Saitek stuff. They make CDUs and MCPs as well as radio stacks.

I had no problems but then I have only had an hour at 4am this morning and I've just finished the tutorial flight so hard to say :D I did however run the hotfix as recommended :D

If you win Lotto then the Fly Engravity stuff is state of the art I think :D

There 6DOF sim is stunning :D

I've been using Topcat and the new pfpx could be to the planner what the 737NG is to the competition :D

I've seen that reviewed and to be fair its right in the middle price wise between the Saitek stuff and the Fly Engravity modules.

In which case I would save for the extra and get the engravity modules. The MCIP for example is a full size replica of the Boeing unit but costs 999euro!!!!! So seeing as I cant afford the replica cockpit that looks like the real thing then the Saitek stuff will do. Nice and cheap but very functional. the VR stuff is too expensive not to look right if you know what I mean.

Ok so I just completed my first full flight from EGPH to LEPA on Vatsim. This aircraft is just amazing! I can honestly say i cant see the point in flying anything else until the PMDG Boeing 777 comes out. Its that good. The only thing you will miss is the longer range flights but Id rather do those in several high quality hops than one low fidelity flight.

I let the autopilot do the full cat III autoland into RWY 27L at LEPA and it was absolutely flawless. In fact its too good! Rate of descent on touchdown was -23fpm which means I got a penalty from my VA as they want (in common with most airlines now) a 'positive' landing, i.e. Around -100fpm to -400 fpm! So the flight logging and tracking software penalised me!!!!!

I'm SERIOUSLY impressed!

Btw Ringo I used to fly for BA Virtual a few years ago. Maybe you can give me a shout when they start recruiting again. Always nice to fly the flag as well as flying the Holiday flights :D

I'm now going to plan my route and fly around the world in this baby :D Something I've always fancied but never done~!

Glad to hear you are enjoying it - the detail is amazing. I have never seen an addon where so many of the buttons/switches are actually modelled. Even the lighting is amazing. Most of the time now I just fly at dawn/dusk and watch the low sun light up the nice dusty display units!

I am actually on leave from BAV at the moment as I got married a while back so I haven't joined back up yet. I haven't a clue when they will open recruiting. I have been inactive for probably about a year now. I used to fly the old PMDG737 with them and used a cost index of 80 which made the performance more like the 400 series would be. Would love to see BA getting NGs but not sure it will happen. All their short haul stuff seems to be mostly airbus these days.

I still have to do lots of practice flights but I don't really have all my dispatch software and vatsim stuff installed. I use nDac which is pretty handy for the charts on there too. Everything is good on the preflight, startup and departure but getting the thing slowed down and proper flap usage is where I need to practice. I normally decreased the speed and then gave it flaps but it seems you can drop the flaps which then updates your target speed on the speedtape. I'm not sure if this is in VNAV only so will need to read more about it.

Some more screens from me. I'm also a regular in and out of LOWI, and
I'm still getting to grips with the new NGX - hence I'm a tad high, and fast, on the LLZ/DME West App for RW26:

Enjoy this latest FSX video by me using the superb Guernsey scenery and the Harrier Jump Jet from Wilco.

Best watched at 1080p and full screen, please feel free to vote on in on my youtube channel or leave a comment.

Here are some screen shots from the video in case you cannot view it or unable to load at 1080p.

btw these shots were not taking directly from FSX but from the post processed video, hence it is not as sharp or clear as my usual shots due to the compression of the video and UL to youtube.
