The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

ASE is a weather engine which just uses manipulates the textures better than the standard weather engine. REX has both but its weather engine isn't as good as ASE apparently.

do you have any screenshots in comparison?

seeing REX is quality images especially the cloud detail, i would like to get an idea of how ASE performs.

No comparison shots I'm afraid. If you install REX textures then I think the ASE engine just uses these. ASE doesn't include any graphics - it just manipulates the weather.

:( i wish i was paid today so i could download rex2.0, setup a flight plan with approaching thunderstorms in the carribean. do any of you guys do the full long haul flights, or is it small 2 hrs flights?

I fly with a virtual airline and occasionally do the long haul stuff - recently did Heathrow to Boston in the 747. Mostly I use the 737 and do the shortest flight I can find to keep my account active!

Has anyone actually gone through NickNs guide to the letter? It really seems like a lot of effort which I can't be bothered with!

Cant believe it would make a massive difference to a quick rig?

did try the config, seems to work pretty well. looking forward to downloading Rex 2.0 tomorrow. tried multiplayer seems ok, but i need to improve on my landing i seem to get the sinkrate alarm, or i miss the runway by a 100 yards.

this is what i normally do, drop to 3,000 feet at 240 knots with flaps at about 5 degrees, then decrease my speed to 180 at about 2,000 ft, then when the runway is about 1 - 1/2 away decend adjusting throttle to around 140 knots flaps on full and landing gear down, i do use the autodecend and autospeed. if you give out any pointers or any errors that would be great.

I do pretty much the same as you, but I tend to come in a bit hotter and if absolutely necessary use the spoilers to quickly trim off speed. It's all about the timing of that flare at the end so you don't end up landing hard or gaining altitude. I'm a bit of a noob at it though tbh. Try manual throttle on the last part of your approach.

My latest shots with REX OD (few blurries here and there, but I get bored of flying cessnas and can't afford an SSD just yet lol)

i normally find myself coming off to the side of the landing stip, lool. iv'e only had about 1-2 successful landings at the moment. it's about having the throttle and decend speed just right, to slow you fall slightly off the runway, to fast you offshoot the runway., but saying that ive seen ppl on multiplayer come in too steap and bounce off the runway, lool

If you are doing visual approaches you can use the PAPIs for a guide. 2 reds and 2 whites mean you are on a nice descent path.

A handy ROT for descent/approach is to half your ground speed and add a zero i.e if you have a GS of 150, then you should ideally be descending around 750ft/min. It's all about being stable in the approach. Coming in way too fast and with erratic controls isn't going to make landing easy.

looks like i have a lot of downloads to do
1. download UTX USA/Europe.
2. download GEX USA/Europe
3. download SceneryTech USA/Europe.

anyone used all three with REX 2.0 OD, apparently iv'e heard something in the pipeline that they are working on Cloud Shadows, but it will be a FPS killer.

You'll love it bro, once you set up a decent theme you can get some really stunning dawn flights. I had a really dazzling night flight through a thunderstorm in a wee cessna and the lightning was awesome. Still getting used to setting it up, but I do recommend reading the user guide in the help tab to get started.

How can I best find out, if and how any scenery disks are fully active? I bought quite a lot of these a while back, and some of them came as massive 4-DVD sets, but the result was always disappointing. They're whole world scenery sets and a few regional ones as well.

In fact, although I could see a slight difference and there were new buildings and landmarks around, it looked nothing like the screenies here, or on the boxes. It just looked to me as if the general settings had been moved to a slightly higher level and optimised a bit, nothing much more than that.

For instance, on the first page of this thread, Soya (in the second batch of screenies, third picture from the top), flying low, shows a view of some houses so detailed and individually different, that I know there's something wrong with my setup, but I can't find out what it might be.

On the other hand, on page 2 beefkeef shows (4th picture fomr the top) a typical scenery view that I get as well, and that's just not good enough. I seem to get that with added scenery disks. It looks nothing like those screenies of Soya's, and I feel that's what it should look like.

The extra sceneries are listed in the GUI and apparently in the correct order too, but I feel I must be doing something wrong. Has anyone got any tips for me? Perhaps a site with checklists or something?
